OK, so I tried a news service called Thundernews.  I paid for unlimited access, yet constantly got peer limit reached errors and couldnt connect.  This is what happened when I contacted online support.

Chat InformationPlease wait for a site operator to respond.
Chat InformationYou are now chatting with 'William'
Chat InformationYour Issue ID for this chat is LTK7103439810X
doug: i cant connect i keep gettting a peer-user error
William: Welcome to Live Chat support.
William: Hello. How may I assist you?
William: May I know your Account Number, please?
doug: i pay for unlimited but keep getting a peer-user 400 error
doug: *edit*
William: May I have the Member ID?
doug: *edit*
William: Okay.
William: Can you please provide me the account registration details like: First Name, Last Name, Plan Subscribed and E-mail Address?
doug: *edit*
William: Thanks for the info.
William: Please wait while I look for your account information.
William: I have reviewed your account details and it seems that everything is working fine from our side.
William: The 'host connection limit reached' or 400 error message is related to the number of simultaneous connections your newsreader is making with our news server.
doug: well i aaure you it isnt. it works fine, then i get a peer-user limit reached error, then later it works fine again
William: Please check your newsreader client settings to ensure it is set for 8 or less simultaneous connections.
doug: its set for 2
William: If you are at 8 or less and still receive this message, it is likely due to long latency in the connection over the internet between your computer and our server.
doug: im on a t1 line
William: If you are geographically distant or are experiencing a slower connection than usual, the connection latency (lags) can cause small timing differences between our server and your computer.
doug: i want to cancel my subscription Ive had nothing but problems with your service
doug: you dont know what you are doing
William: These timing differences can cause our server to detect more open connections than your newsreader calculates it has open.
William: We have two suggestions to avoid the problem:
doug: stop giving me the form letter answers and cancel my subscription
William: 1) Try connecting on ports 7000, 8000 or 9000. We have 3 other fiber backbone network providers and these ports allow you to force your outgoing traffic onto those other fiber provider networks. Each backbone likely takes a different route to you and may allow you to route around any internet congestion that might be slowing your connection.
William: I apologize for the inconvenience, Doug.
doug: CANCEL MY SUBSCRIPTION
William: 2) Drop the max connections in your newsreader client by one. This will greatly reduce the chances of our server detecting more than 8 connections.
William: Please try with the above settings and let us know if any problem persists
doug: are you mentally challenged?
doug: CANCEL
doug: MY
doug: SUBSCRIPTION
William: Okay Doug, please wait while I cancel the account, it may take a few seconds.
doug: wow you finally got a clue
William: Thank you for your patience...
William: We have updated your account to cancelled status. You will not be billed again for account *edit* once your paid service ends. You may continue to use your account until it expires on 04-Mar-2007.
doug: You are horrible at your job. I suggest you go to www.monster.com and search under the heading 'janitor'.

Can anyone suggest a good news service company?

I'm not impressed. Did you try connecting to those other ports? I've waged some epic battles against crap tech support, unless there was a previous interaction I'd say you kind of jumped the gun there, at least from my perspective. My method:

1) Research the problem & try anything I turn up
2). Contact tech support, explain issue and what you tried
3) If they suggest something new, try it and when it fails call them back.
4) Re-explain that you already tried what they suggested.
5) ESCALATE THAT SHIT
6) If the next level up can't help, keep on escalating.

In your case, I would have tried connecting to those other ports and reducing your # of connections even further (and maybe try a different newsreader as well). If those things failed I would have seen of tech support had anything else to try and then cancelled my service. Generally when cancelling service I try to be as nice as possible about it, it's often hard but I've found that when you are pissed the fuck off and screaming at some lowly customer service rep in Bangalore they will often pretend to disable your service but not actually do it. Just to get back at you since they aren't allowed to really flip their shit on you without losing their jobs. The only time time when it pays to get mean and surly is when you are working on escalation.

I had a VP from Orbitz.com call me at home and spend 15 minutes apologizing to me because I escalated my problem all the way to the top. That took a lot of work, but when I get ripped off for $600 I'm like a pitt bull with lockjaw until I get my shit back.

i agree with dick cheney.

we all know that the people that work tech support are idiots reading responses off a piece of paper.  but those responses they give everybody fix 90% of the problems.  for most tech savey people, its a waste of time, but sometimes.  but sometime, believe it or not, it does fix the problem.  i usually just sit through their ramble the first time.  try their suggestions, then reply back and say it didn't work.

i went on for 3 weeks with STEAM because after that last major update, i can't open steam anymore.  they slipped and told me that there are about 300 people like me who can't get the program running anymore.  well, after dealing with them for 3 week they told me is was an issue with my end and stopped helping me.  you can imagine how pissed i am because i can't get to my games anymore because i can't run steam in online or offline mode.  oh, and they aren't responsible for refunding my games, even the ones i purchased through them.  ASSHOLES!!!

that is totally lame. what I would do is try to simultaneously reach out to actual developers who work on Steam, the execs who run the company, and other people who may be in your situation. post any documentation you have on a website and encourage others to do the same. when you try to contact developers and execs make sure to include documentation of what you have gone through as well as links to the web where you have posted it. that's roughly the method I used against Orbitz.com (my most epic battle since their customer service was a wall of uselessness that was REALLY hard to overcome), it ultimately worked very well.

what Dick says. Steam as a company are getting away with far too much shite perpetrated against their customers. you should really try, even if it just means you get your money back. it also doesn't make sense how if it's affecting over 300 users (and undoubtedly there's more, that's just the amount who could be arsed actually contacting them) that it's only user end. surely they have a responsibility for ALL thier customers to ensure they get what they paid for. if you actually paid for the games with a credit card you could contact the company and see if they have any advice. are there any comsumer ombudsmen or agencies in the states that might also be able to advise you?

and going back to BelPimps..... While the guy was a fucking tool, that was a bit harsh man. those guys are told to say those standard lines to you regardless of whether or not it applies to you. You gotta grin and bear it, at least once, til you can get in contact with someone higher up.

Also did anyone notice that BelPimp was directed to a converstaion with "William", only for him to say his name was "Doug" later in the convo. i'd say those guys are reading about 5 different converstaions at once, and only respond with something other than the standard answers when they see someone trying to cancel or that...
yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.
