Got my Opteron 170 installed earlier (swapped for A64 3000+ @ ~2.3ghz) and overclocked that mofo right to just under 2.6ghz. Amazing how much more responsive my system feels now. I can alt tab in and out of HL2 almost instantly. Even cooler is that it runs at a lower voltage than my A64 did despite the higher speed. Not sure how it's doing on temps and all that yet, but the heatsink seems surprisingly solid (standard retail HSF) so I'd bet it's not too hot.

They must run very cool if you can get a good OC out of a stock heatsink/fan!

the stock HSF on the Opteron's are apparently pretty awesome, it's got heatpipes built in and a decent fan. The Opterons are just A64's with 1mb L2 cache that have passed a more stringent testing regime, thus they tend to run cooler and clock higher than comparable A64's. Anyone still on a 939 board, I definitely recommend buying a dual-cored Opteron soon, they've stopped production on 939 parts so the prices are going to shoot up soon since there is still a big demand for them.

The stock opteron HSF is actually pretty damn good. I was considering buying an dual core opteron, but they're way too expensive compared to dual core A64's

Decent overclock on that 170, I picked up a 3800X2 not too long ago and it OC'd to 2.7ghz on 1.45V. Steppings are a huge factor in how good A64 X2's and Opterons overclock

on the 939's the prices aren't too different. I got my 170 for $190 from Newegg (w/free 3-day shipping and a free wallet!), the comparable X2 was $130 but has half the L2 cache and doesn't have the sweet ass HSF. Seemed like the better choice overall for my situation. If money is a big concern the Opteron 165 is $10 less than the 170 and is the same core and all that so all you are giving up for that extra $10 is the 10x multiplier. In my case I wanted the 10x because I figured it was worth it for the extra overclocking room (cheap value ram). And I'm sure the dual cored Opterons are going to double in cost over the next 6 months as the supply shrinks, so I am definitely happy with the choice. I remember when the Opteron 170's were like $600 each :)
