kay, my house has 3 levels. it's not that big. I'm gonna put a router in my room (all the way up) or down in the den (all the way down).  what is a good router for me to go out and buy that will provide me with acceptable signal strength?  I really don't know shit about routers, verizon sent me a modem/router when i got dsl but now I'm making the big switch to cable internet (lol@irony).

Shit I don't even get it for free

Linksys Wireless G broadband router would be good to go with, but if you want the best over all range and signal strength, you should look into Linksys Wireless N broadband router.

I have a US Robotics (model 8054) router. It's a year or two old, but it's treated me pretty well.

Well this depents on alot of things!

1. Wirelees router?(need one computer hard wired to router and modem and all the other computers need a wireless adapter to comunicate with the router. Most new laptops are wireless B & G not N)

2.I had a wireless G router (linksys WRT5G) I have cable It is good and cheap! I have 3 other computers that are wirelees that connect to it. They work great but you will only get 54 megabits per second and if they are desktops you need to buy a wireless adapter.

3.I just upgraded my router to a Linksys WRT350N wich is a real good router it has a gigabit hook up if your motherboard supports it wich will make the wired computer alot faster and if you buy wireless N adapters they to will be alot faster(in other word all you wireless computers can connect at speeds of 300 megabits per second but it can vary depending on things that might interfear with the signal. Concrete walls and things like that)

4 So go wireless G if you want to go cheap and reliable and most laptops will work with them or go N if you want more speed( more expensive but worth it in the long run

Hope I helped if not catch me on XFire

The Linksys WRT54G/S/L routers are universally admired for being 1) Great and 2) A fanboy's wetdream come true. I've got one and it works wonders. It covers all 100 square feet of the one bedroom apartment I share with my grandma.

If you're really worried about signal strength but you want quality of the router first, go with the abovementioned and then if the signal doesn't reach to all floors, just buy some repeaters. If you install the router on the middle floor and place repeaters above and below it you should be fine.

Yeah, I have the linksys 54g.......

The problem? It craps out on p2p action. Even with special drivers it chokes. Linksys has never really addressed the issue properly. So, if you p2p, avoid that router like the plague.
