I'm selling some stuff on Craigslist because I'm going to be moving back to San Francisco next week (graduation is this Saturday!). Got a scam reply from "Larry Moore" about my dresser.

Larry:
Hello how are you doing?I came across your item on criagslist and i
have taken a close look at the advert and am completely satisfied. I
will like to make an outright purchase of the item so please  save
this for me as it will help save me some money i  would have used in
buying a new one.And i will appreciate it if you will send me a pic if
you have one.

Me:
Where are you located.

Larry:
Hello i really appreciate your response to my earlier mail.like i said
i will like to buy this item so pls do withdraw the advert from
Craigslist. I will also like you to know that i will be paying via
check due to the distance as i am located in GA.I will need you to
provide me with the following information to facilitate the mailing of
the check .

1.Your full name
2.Your mailing address be it residential
3.Your phone number.

**I will like you to know that you will not be responsible for
shipping i will have my mover come over as soon as you have cashed the
check**

Have a nice day.

So, how should I reply? Don't worry, I know all about 419eater.com. So fellas, what should I say? I'm open to all ideas

Anywho.com shows 57 Larry Moore's in the state of GA. Any clue which one he is? If you have an email from him look at the header info, you should be able to get his ISP from that.
How certain are you that he is a scammer?

Hi,how was your day ?I want you to understand that the deal as my  secretary as posted the payment already, but there was a slight error i guess we can handle with care, instead of the actually amount  for Ikea "HOPEN" chest ,she made out the check for $3100  she claim that was what i requested  but she didn't get that straight.

So once you have the check please cash it and  deduct the money for your goods plus $100 that for your run around expenses.

The excess fund should please be sent to my mover via western union, this fund will be use in offsetting the cost of the shipment he as undertaken  for me recently.
**Please email at once to let me know that i can trust to have the excess funds sent to my mover**

believe me now?

Yes, definitely it sounds very scammy. Perhaps the hope is that you deposit the check and immediately wire the money, then the check turns out to be bad but it's too late cuz you already sent him the "difference". My vote is to try and interest the pigs. Probably they won't give a shit, but you might get lucky with them and when it comes to fucking someone they are the best there is.
Since this guy is probably not doing this with his real identity and whatnot, it will probably take a lot of work to really get at him. If you can figure out where he is physically maybe we collectively know someone who knows someone in his vicinity who can "personally deliver his check". He doesn't seem like your typical Nigerian 419er so playing him psychologically may be difficult. The last 419er to make it through my spam filters was convinced the CIA was on their way to torture him before he decided to stop emailing with me :)

It's funny he wants you to wire the mover, maybe an opening could be insisting on providing the "difference" to the mover in person.

Larry:
Hello how are you doing i will like you to email me back with a response to my previous emails concerning the mistake that occured

Me:
That sounds reasonable. Please mail me the check at my business address. That way my assistant will pick up the check and just mail you the difference immediately and I don't even have to think about it. I will have to say this however, I would like my item sold as soon as possible, as I am going on a long trip very soon. The sooner the better. Thank you for your purchase.

Thats weird, interestingly enough, the package is being sent from Georgia. I'm guessing that he picked a random name off the net whom I would pin the scam down on following the bum check. Heres the update:

Larry:

Hello how are you doing i will like you to know that an attempt was made to deliver the check but he address you gave was undeliverable here is the tracking number 1Z431F161591750254 so i will like you to go and get it from UPS. i will be looking forward to your email as soon as you have done that have a nice day

Me:
Larry,
I checked with my secretary and she has not seen any package come in. I do hope you sent it to my business address as I requested in the previous email. According to the UPS website, it says this:
DALLAS/FT. WORTH A/P,
TX,  US 05/18/2007 7:00 A.M. THE BILLING OPTION SELECTED BY THE SENDER IS NOT AVAILABLE;UPS WILL CONTACT THE SENDER AND/OR RECEIVER REGARDING THE STATUS OR DISPOSITION OF THIS PACKAGE
I have my check ready to send to you, however I cannot do so until I receive your package.

Larry:
Hello how are you doing ?What i am actually telling you is that the package is at Ups in TX i do not know why they could not deliver it to you but i will simply like you to get to there Office at DALLAS/FT. WORTH A/P, TX,  US and get the package from them. Also for the record i will like you to know that you will not be mailing back a check to me instead you will send the money at this money gram store

ACE CASH EXPRESS #301
1604 ELM ST
DALLAS, TX  752017273
Tel: (214) 742-9428

to this name and address

Name........Tinamarie Caldwell
Address......293 south 40th pl apt b
City..........Springfield
State.....OR
Zip code.....97478

and get back to me with the following details

1 8 Digit Reference Number
2 Senders Name and Address
3 Amount Sent

i will be expecting your email thanks very much for your understanding

Me:

Larry,
I would also like to clarify, seeing as there is a billing issue with UPS, that I will not be paying for the package as you are the buyer and that is your responsibility. I would recommend that you call UPS and fix the problem with the package. I have already agreed to send you the difference of the checks which I am willing to do because I want my item sold fast; however, getting your package properly paid for and mailed is not of my concern. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks,
-Filliam H. Muffman

I'm still figuring out what to do with the guy, but seeing as I'm losing patience/interest with this scam, I'm not gonna go to UPS and pay for his package, if that is the case. I don't think the scammer is worth my time if he can't manage to get the package to me. I checked the post office where my box is, told them about whats going on and to look out for my package, and they havn't received anything yet. If you guys have any ideas as to what to do, let me know.

He must be running 50 scams at once, coz his replys are fast like that.

Larry:
Well i will like you to know that i actually paid for the shipping i do not know what went wrong but i will not like the lapses of UPS affect our transaction so i will simply like you to get it from Ups at there office and i can assure you that you will not have to pay for the shipping but in case you have to due to the billing problem you can deduct it from the check i sent you before sending the excess to Tina via Money Gram i am so sorry for all the stress i might be putting you through get back to me with what you think.

....yeah, I can simply deduct the cost of the shipping from his bum check, sounds great!

Me:
Larry,
I cannot pick up the package, as it is being held at a UPS warehouse where they sort packages, not a pick-up center. Thus I could not pick up the package even if I had time to do so. The phone number for UPS is 1-800-PICK-UPS. You can call them and figure out where the problem is. Thanks.
-Muffman

I'm getting tired of this shitty scammer, this guy isn't even worth my time. If the douche bag can't even do his part of the scam properly, I'm not gonna put in the effort to give him his just dessert.

Wait, so he's sending a check from Georgia, which he wants you to send the excess to Oregon?  Where is he having you send the actual item?

From their website:

Recognizing scams

Most scams involve one or more of the following:

  • inquiry from someone far away, often in another country
  • Western Union, Money Gram, cashier's check, money order, shipping, escrow service, or a "guarantee"
  • inability or refusal to meet face-to-face before consumating transaction

    Report him.
{pDs} Lead Salad: bike why did you change your name
Jessica343: so I can get heals
{pDs} Lead Salad: oh damn good idea
{pDs} Lead Salad has changed their name to {pDs} Lead Salad (is a girl)

the package contains the check? Also, I thought he was having his mover pick the item up? You could maybe see how he reacts if you tell him that some sort of law enforcement contacted you asking questions about him.
