Any articles or sources and such online would be helpful.  I'm doing a 5-10 page paper on the Physics of Bowling.

Thanks,

MaMa

PS.  Yeah I'm really desperate.  Please help.

Mama, you are a slug.

A paper?  Like an essay?  I'm assuming this isn't for your physics class, or is it?

Hmm.  Okay, you have a bowling ball.  It has a mass, whatever it is, m.  That's the m in your formula F=ma.  So, let's start by looking at the windup.  You basically have a pendulum with your shoulder socket to the center of the ball as the pendulum arm.

Describe the motion by starting at a the horizontal, with the ball behind you.  You have a formula for swinging pendulums in your book.  So you go from the horizontal to the vertical where you release, and that gives the ball its initial velocity.

However, remember when you bowl, you're moving forward, so add that velocity to the velocity gained from the pendulum swing.

Now, you can talk about friction and the lack of it on the ball because they wax the lanes so it's really slippery.

There is some friction because the ball grabs, ever so slightly, to the lane to turn.

Talk about the rotation imparted on the ball by the bowler to get it to cut.  You have some formulas for spinning bodies which you can use.

You're going to have to assume the collision with the pins is elastic, though it's not because you generate sound and some heat.  But talk about the pins moving not only radially away from the ball, but they are also imparted some spin to them.   Remember, the direction of the ball is the direction the pins will travel.  The vectors involved will at best nudge the pins to the left or right of the ball at an angle that is less than 90 degrees because there is no vector which will send them to the left at a 90 degree angle.

So then the pins spin around until the friction of the wood dissipates the energy of the pins banging around and the ball's energy is dissipated when it smacks into the back wall and transfers some of its energy into the wall and retains some because it bounces back.

A paper on bowling.  What a stupid assignment. Your school sucks.

Stupid assignment.

They want you to talk about your basic Newtonian laws - a body in motion stays in motion; a body at rest stays at rest this is so unless a force acts upon the body.  So anytime you have contact with anything, that will be a force acting on the body.  Talk about gravity, talk about how the ball would have gone in a straight line save for the rotation and the effect of friction acting against the rotation, pushing the ball in the direction opposite the spin.  Talk about the initial energy imparted at the beginning is all the energy the ball has.  After that it loses energy to friction, collisions, some wind resistance, but not much, and sound, heat, vibration, yada, yada, yada.   The sound you hear as it travels down the lane is the forward momentum turning into vibrations in the wood, then the wood amplifies the sound like a speaker cone into the air.

Talk about the entropy in the set up of the pins.  They would rather be in a lower state so that's why they lay down when the ball hits them.

Talk about the friction needed in the fingers at the point of contact with the ball to keep the ball in your hand.

Hmm.  Angular momentum needs to be conserved, and the ball has momentum in the direction of the pins.

Don't forget to talk about the conservation of energy, that what is put into it goes somewhere.

I hate your assignment.
