New PSU came and the fucker still won't power on :( I'm not completely convinced the new PSU is DOA - I tried hooking it up to another mobo with nothing in it but a CPU and it still wouldn't power on, the PSU fans won't even spin. I also tried plugging it into nothing but a cdrom drive and no change. But then, I can hear the buzz inside it when I plug it in and flip it's switch so its got power inside (my old PSU is dead silent when powered up). I don't know what's up with my machine but I'm suspecting that I may have a dead mobo or worse. I am very very fucking depressed now. I have an Asrock 939dual, which I don't think they make anymore. I don't know for sure that its the mobo that is fried, but if its MORE than just the board than I am double fucked. Or worse if its something pricey like my Vid card also. This really fucking sucks so much and I have no real way of testing anything beyond what I have done without buying more shit. I may be gone from gaming for a long time. anyone know if a 939 Opteron heatsink can be used on an AM2 Athlon64? Looking at what it will take to replace everything :( It seems stupid to try just buying a new 939 mobo when it may turn out to be that my CPU and RAM are dead too, then I would be stuck replacing them with DDR and a 939 CPU instead of being on AM2. Well look at it this way, a new AM2 sys with good DDR2 ram, a decent CPU, and a half way good mobo, you can look to spend around $220 or so for just those components. If your looking for a little more power then I'd suggest going for a C2D setup, those usually run around $280-320 for a decent one. There are some pretty good deals out there, you just have 2 be willing 2 go out there and look.

I'm looking at the Gigabyte M61P-S3 w/ an A64X2 blackbox and 2gigs of Corsair for about $300. That should be a solid system. If my 7600GT is dead then throw in another $100 for an 8600GT. If my HDD is dead then good riddance, it's a 60gig ATA133 I've had for years so throw in another $60 for some fancy SATA shit. In reality I will probably buy the cheapest AM2 CPU I can find to save money since swinging $300 is going to be really hard right now. If my Opty HSF I have now works on the AM2 chip then the blackbox CPU is a bit more affordable at least. Sure wish I could fucking test my gear though, I don't have anything to swap out and can't figure out why the fuck the new PSU isn't powering shit up at all, it's really weirding me out, doesn't seem like normal behavior at all. I guess I will really just have to bite the damn bullet and buy new shit. I've been without computer for a week now and it's driving me nuts already.

minor progress: I confirmed that the new PSU works and the old PSU is dead. Dug out an ancient mobo and got it to power. My motherboard and god knows what else is definitely dead. Guess I should start saving up :( If anyone has recommendations for good deals send 'em by way. I'm looking for something AM2 based, and it's got have IDE on it in case my existing drive is salvageable. I'm really hoping I don't need more than a mobo, CPU, and some RAM. I boycott tigerdirect for their shady business practices. I'd rather pay another $10 or so and go with newegg or mwave. Thanks though! Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

Then I'll get you a nice price on some stuff from the egg. I use both, which ever has the best price, wins.

I know how annoying it is when a shitty PSU fucks up your computer, It happend to my new computer, I got my components tested, the frazzeled components were there Motherboard, Hard Drive and the PSU itself, it might be the same for you, so you might not have to go and get a new CPU, RAM or Graphics card. I think the casue was very simple, I accidentally put in the power cord into the back of the PSU while the cable was live ( I thought it was off ) causing it to short out. Do you think you might have done the same thing? Quote:Posting related image due to my inability to formulate an intelligent response. BlooDz wrote:i cant type good im stupid

In my case replacing just the motherboard isn't the best route. If my CPU and/or RAM are fried then I am stuck buying another 939 CPU and more DDR ram. Not to mention blowing $50 or whatever on the motherboard. Worst case I wind up spending $200+ buying my way back onto a dead platform. If I spend $250 or so I can switchover to the AM2 based boards and have an upgrade path down the line. I would rather spend the extra money in order to be up and running sooner and not risk having to get stuck back on a dead platform. I may get lucky and find just replacing the motherboard solves everything, but if I'm wrong then I am out a computer even longer and ultimately out more money. That's how I see it anyway. I've never had PSU problems before, I've always had relatively high-end PSUs. Of course this PSU was fairly old and had been through a lot of power outages and surges, probably why it failed so catastrophically in this case. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

True he will see a performance boost out of what you posted but he will most likely be lacking in any real gaming power. If he goes with what I suggested then he will be able to do whatever he wants with his sys on a proven mobo, cpu, and ram. I have built a sys like this and I had it OC'ed to 3.1GHz on air cooling, all you have to do is keep an eye on your temp readings and you'll be fine. Of course getting a good air cooler doesn't hurt but how much do those run, about $20-$40 for a great one, not much of a cost if you ask me.

If my opty cooler will work on an AM2 Athlon I can just transfer it over, it's a nice HSF with heatpipes and whatnot. I may go for the blackbox if it can, otherwise I'll save the money and get a retail A64X2 and accept that I won't be able to push it as far. I did find out that the new Phenoms are backwards compatible with existing AM2 boards, so there's my upgrade path. I get paid soon so I may just pull the trigger on this and deal with the consequences of being short $300 down the road. Re: Motherboards, I'm really leaning towards that gigabyte board. I've dealt with their boards in the past and been happy. I don't care about SLI since there is no way I can afford two videocards, and it's supposed to be a solid overclocker. I'm skeptical of sub-$50 boards, but don't have the budget to buy a high-end board. Re: RAM, I've never messed around with DDR2 but it looks like even the cheapo stuff is pretty good. I will probably just go with whatever Newegg or mwave has cheapest at the time. One thing I am really worried about is if my HDD is dead. Almost nothing is backed up :( I actually lost about 70% of my MP3 collection about a year ago when my external died, I was literally about to move my collection back onto my main drive after doing a rebuild when the thing headcrashed. If it's all gone that will suck, I have/had mp3s that pre-date Napster. We used to download them via FTP! For real. If my drive is dead, can anyone recommend a good value drive? Speed is more important than size, and longevity is more important than speed. Basically, I don't care how small the drive is so long as it's fast and won't die unless it gets fried by a power surge! The E2140 will hit 3ghz+ guaranteed with no voltage change or small voltage bumps. You'd have to be an utter retard not to get 3ghz with it since all you do is crank up the FSB to 390/400mhz. And when you hit 3ghz+ CPU is no longer a factor and you are completely GPU bound when it comes to gaming. The Abit IP35 is a proven board, it hits 500mhz on FSB and is rock solid after you update to the newest bios. Plus he'll be able to run the ram 1:1 with the Supertalents since they have JEDEC ram which are incredibly good overclockers and you will be able to run 1:1 If you're worried so much about having an upgrade path, the P35 chipset runs Quad Cores so you can upgrade to something good whenever you feel like it.
