I have already asked several of you via xfire and I appreciate your guidance/help. For everyone else, I am going to be going to college next year and i need to decide whether a laptop or a desktop would be better suited for me. Here are the Pros (that i can tell) of a laptop:- mobility
- able to take it with you anywhere
- random things between classes
- can take notes
The Cons - cost alot to repair
- do not get much bang for your buck
- can easily be swiped
- have to spend thousands for a good reliable one
Now for the desktop:
The Pros: - reliable and relatively easy to get fixed
- can get much more power and performance for the same price as a mediocre laptop
- can basically do everything you would want
The Cons: - can not take it to class (duh)
- would need to purchase a biometric scanner for added security
- takes up much more space (dorm room...probably not much space but havent seen one yet)
The main thing that prompted this was that i found a desktop for $959 which has the specs of : quad core 2.4 ghz processor, 500gb HD, 3 gb RAM, an nvidia 8500 GT, among other details. For that price in a laptop, i would get something that i wouldnt know if it will be reliable and something that has much less power. The thing that deters me from the desktop is that im going to be double majoring in biology and chemical technology, which i assume will require alot of note taking. I can take notes on paper and transfer them to the desktop...but i still dont really know what the situation will be like. Whether i buy a laptop or a desktop, i dont want to regret it too much. Thanks for anyone who has helped me so far.

for college go with the laptop, definitely. you'll just get pissed off being tied to your desktop and not being able to take your work with you. and space will be a huge factor for most living in student accommodation too. yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

Go to the College where I live, they are so desperate for people to go there, beacause it is so shit, they gave everyone a free laptop/bribe. Quote:Posting related image due to my inability to formulate an intelligent response. BlooDz wrote:i cant type good im stupid

You could get a desktop with a new PDA for your note taking, most of the new PDA's out there have voice recognition software on it and should be able to take your notes down for you, all you have to do is point the mic in the right direction and it does the rest. Then, when you want the notes, either look at them on the PDA or transfer them to the PC, either way, you have one hell of a portable device that doesn't cost that much and you can have the best of both worlds. As far as room in your dorm, they do make single sized desks that you can put the PC under and put the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and a small printer on, relatively inexpensive too.

Note taking on a laptop in class sucks. All you here is clicking keyboards. If all you need the laptop for is note taking and maybe the occasional office app then just get something used for cheap and build yourself a decent desktop to do real work on. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

I am currently living with both in my first year. I had a pretty good desktop already, and found a good laptop for really cheap. Laptop note taking can be very awkward in some of the less spacious classes, and in general most of the people i see taking notes on a laptop almost always eventually end up playing games or on facebook. That being said, the ability to write papers anywhere you goddamn please is very VERY nice. Desktops are generally more reliable in many ways, however mobility trumps them all... go with laptop. Thanks for the comments.. and yes, i do have a budget of around $1000 .... i havent really looked into pda's or anything yet. I was thinking i could just let a cheap laptop that can just run word and an occasional internet search.... then just get a decent desktop. I dont have time to build my own though.
