go with your gut. simple as. i had for years worked it out in my head that i was going to do pschology... and despite having read up on it and all that, I took it for a year and dropped out (despite actually having earned a place to continue it all the way through, which was quite competative). anywho i took computer sciences as a time filler that year, but stuck with because it felt right. now i'm falling into the whole AI side of things (particularly modelling behaviour, which is ironic really). so i thinking i'm going to pursue some form of games development myself (currently looking at a new masters that is run by one of the founders of Havok. that's right THE Havok. the Irish company who created the physic engine used in HL2) but if i followed me head i'd still be stuck in that god-awful psych course (i hear horror stories off mates who kept it up). only you know yourself what you want at the end of the day. yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

ok it seems like alot of people dont understand that high school is about using the system to your advantage.. DO NOT GO WITH YOUR GUT. Technical highschools are meant to train you for work right out of high school. So if thats your priority great, I hope you enjoy getting paid max 50k a year and being among the low/middle class. Treat high school like a college prep even if your at a shitty public school. Public schools are what you make out of them. Have you ever seen those online adds to take classes online to become a video game creator? Everytrime i see those I laugh. You know why? Because I gaurantee every single top game corporation hires people that are experts in their particular field, not an expert in video game making. Video games are about pushing boundaries, coming up with inovating ways to play a game, not replicating the ideas of the present. All you will learn at that crap technical high school dragon is how to replicate the present and not gain a general understanding of design, progoramming, and what not. College is mandatory nowadays. Sure some (the exceptions) make money without that education but they are lucky. Get your degree or by the time your 40 you will make max 80k....good luck with retirement with that lot if you want to raise a family as well. SLOW DOWN DRAGON.......Who knows maybe you graduate from a top college and get hired as a game programmer, or perhaps you may program the next version of windows and make millions?! I was fotrunate to go to a private college prep where they hand fed me this info that most of the population will never know. Work hard in high school to get into a name college, or frankly any college, then graduate from college and you will gain respect, make more money and get a better job. If you look online for job openings game designers are looking for engineers, programmers and with their BA/BS in their specified fields not some high school kid who played alot of games growing up. The kids that play alot just become testers that get paid a whopping 20 bucks an hour!............................... slow down, in college if its a decent college they will have amazing programs in all fields and you can take as many classes as you want .... i almsot laughed at some of the posts here when people said go with you gut and what not. Great advice if you want your applications rejected ....i know people that have.......it sucks..... this is a harsh post but from what i can understand you need it. talk to your counselors and they will repeat what i say. edit: AP classes are great. Usually at good colleges taking the classes only show that you are driven and help boost the gpa since they are graded on a 5.0 scale and not a 4.0. Meaning an A is a 5.0, B 4.0....etc. Sure they cost money but its not much.....I gaurantee that stupid technical program is nothing compared to a AP class. AP classes are designed to trasnfer to almost any college. Their curriclum is approved by all universtites and widely accepted. Take that instead. I got into every single college I applied to....and chose UCLA...trust me college is a system that with the correct knowdlege can help you out qalot Code:<a href="http://www.sloganizer.net/en/" target="_blank" title="Sloganizer - the slogan generator"><img src="http://www.sloganizer.net/en/image,Sloganizer,white,black.png" border="0" alt="generated by sloganizer.net" title="This slogan was generated by sloganizer.net"/></a>

after rethinking it a bit, and reading what dipshit above me said, lol, jp, jp I think i still stand on my original opinion, but I recommend that depending on the course you choose in life, its still better to decide to take the classes even if they suck cause its a life experience. if you don't enjoy it, you can go back to boring mundane high school very easily. Take it, make what you can of it, then go to a real school afterwords (while having a decent college job) and continue your education.
After its all said and done, if you completely fail at life, that will be a bright point. If you do good and make a living that you are proud of, then you will still be happy you went to it, even if it was crap because its still going to be better then nothing, and thats what public school is. Nothing.
Go to a university in your area. Talk to one of there carrier guidance counselors. Tell them what your carrier path you want to go into and ask them what they recommend. Many of them know whats involved in moving on and can tell you the harsh truths. I am not an alcoholic... I am a drunk.... Alcoholics go to meetings. The actual real life timeframe for these occurences is unknown at this time. Sometimes it happens more than once in a day and during other periods it would be more like for hell to freeze over than anything actuallly getting done. this tech school doesnt prepare you to work in the class i'm taking. this class prepares me for college classes, it gives me the basics so i can jump into college, instead of starting from scratch. Cantrip wrote:When I die, I want to be reincarnated as a woman's jogging bra.

so.... you've got the chance to take a class in something that will give you a sneak peek of what you'll hopefully be doing in college and possible the rest of your life, and wont impact on your chances of getting into said college... i dont get what Tony is saying then... if you've got a chance of doing it before college then i'd say go for it. you never know, you might decide half way through that course that game development isn't for you (any kind of software development is a VERY tedious process, especially on the scale of the modern game). better to figure that out now than before college... I personally would have loved the chance to have done a bit more Comp sciences stuff at second level... i feel i'm playing catch up with the kind of people i'll be competing for spots with on the courses i'm looking at... or then again, dont do a course in game development at all. instead do a normal comp sciences degree and research masters/phd in some specific technical area releveant to games, and then apply to a company that way as an expert in your field. or set your own one up like the guys from Havok. or go work for a software company for years getting hands on coding experience and keep an eye out for jobs in the industry... or do an art course or something and try get a job as a concpet artist... and so on... there's a lot of ways, don't get overly hung up about it... one of the most senior people in my University was a labourer until his mid twenties... yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

the tech schools around my area are just 2 years of schooling (to finish high school) and you get placed into a job. now what that job is, depends on what classes you take and those jobs are not too good. dragon...think of school as a funnel (bad analogy but go with it). You want to start at the top of the funnel (the large open space). You do this buy taking a wide range of classes and looking at all whats out there. You dont want to be at the bottom of the funnel (which is where i think you are heading right now) becuase you have something set in your mind. But maybe once you go to college (or tech school) and see all the other possibilities, you may become lost. The bottom line is to "funnel" your choices the right way...meaning start with alot through finishing high school and continuing through college. You dont want to have something set and then see all different kinds of things you would like to do. Explore areas...thats what school is for. But it is up to you. The right way: (sorry for the lame funnel) Wide range of Possibilties -------------------- \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / | | Fore sure Profession The wrong way, is well, upside down.

tonyrwc1 wrote:sounds stupid college should prepare you fully.... nothing can prepare you fully... at least not for IT and tech stuff. for example when your programming in college you only have time to learn a sliver of what's out there... it's just impossible to teach for all scenarios, there isn't time to be taught all the methods and classes in language etc. employers will never look at your grade and think just because you have a good degree your set, they are far more likely to look at your projects and how you can apply yourself to specific problems at hand and absorb info... never ever get into the habit of thinking college will prepare you... at some stage you will be thrown in the deep end and everything you learned will be for shit. that's what happens in the real world, and no course can prepare you for it fully... colleges are typically just as insulated as secondary/high schools are. yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.
