What the hell? I get this message:

"please wait while steam validates game files"

When I run TF2, then it goes to 100% really quick, but still says "validating" and just sits there.

Here's the same problem with HL2:

http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/archive/index.php/t-27944.html

"delete cliet-registry.blob or something along those lines and reinstall."

"Also try, right clicking on [name of game] in your STEAM games list. Go to properties, local files and Verify local game cache. "

Plus this from another forum:

" I had the same problem (I managed to read an entire book and do several pieces of coursework in the "validating game files" stage) - you can disable your connection and use Steam's offline mode (in one of the most stupid pieces of programming ever, offline mode only works if you're not connected to the internet), in which case the game loads up straight away without any of Steam's nonsense."
You should be more like Cantrip.

The "Verify Local Game Cache" method was what worked for me. What an irritating "feature."
