Ever noticed how many things in life if graphed against time represent simple harmonic motion, in other words are cyclical in nature? The most obvious case would be real estate prices; pricing of houses is constantly fluctuating as one play may have rising prices and 10 years later prices in that area will plument. Another great example is global warming. History has proven to repeat itself and still we have not learned from our past and make a stronger effort to reduce stress on our environment due to pollution. But then their is the wdfnews.com community.

I have been a member for a little over a year now and from what I have witnessed and read about, the forum population has been known to fluctuate. Of course this fluctuation may be caused by a number of things, but as wdfnews is primarily a gaming community we can speculate that most games hold the attention of the average player for no longer than 6 months. Meaning  That every six months a number of gamers leave the community in search of other communities that support their current games. The most recent game transition was from HL:DM to TF2. We lost about 10-12 members during this transition (some were lost when we lost support for DOD:S server) but we eventually brought our numbers skyrocketing back with the success of TF2.

And what relevance does any of this have to you all? NONE all it shows is that Whut is afraid of intimacy, that gripcock is actually a female, belligerant pimp is a cocaine addict, that splinter probably ignored this article and that I am most likely bored out of my mind.

It's the same no matter where you go or what game you play; from FPS to RPGs. I have seen a mass exodus happen on every game I've ever played online in every clan or guild I've ever been a part of. It'll most likely happen again here. The thing that matters is the ambience, friendship and leadership that will keep people coming back to the same clique day after day, year after year, game after game.

...and it still doesn't change the fact that I think Tony eats paint chips.

exactly correct horsy that was the point I was going to make but decided to cut my essay short. WDFnews.com has been successful in MAINTAINING a fairly large community even during the natural swings that comes along with game shifts. Most clans die off and members lose contact whereas here we lose a few an may gain some new faces but no matter what we have a core group of members who do not leave (no matter if we want them to or not! HEHE, points at myself).

I may not have been here from the start but I am no n00b when it comes to clans and gamming communities. I am sure that we all have had our fair share of clans that have died off alongside of the games the played. Perhaps next article I will provide a conclusion to my statements but then again, it was pretty rewarding to have badhorsie write such a great followup. He was able to comprehend the ideas I was conveying and in turn provide a cause/effect analysis to the subject. Great post horsie!

I've ran 3 different clans for different shooters, so I know this all too well.  Rainbow Six, Call of Duty, and Counter-Strike.  When Rogue Spear came out my clan disbanded because my PC couldn't really run it, Call of Duty broke up when COD2 came out, and Counter-strike migrated to Source.....which so did I ,but I just didnt want to lead the clan anymore, :p

I was ranked top 100 in Empire Earth..  I almost cried when they shut down the online servers... That clan went right down the shitter, they tried EEII and Cs:s but nothing quite kept them around.

And I do see what you are saying. Even when games die, or people challenge the community.. It stays strong.

I didn't like EEII and I hear EEIII is simply horrible. The airport thing in EEII where they would just fly in circles around the building instead of landing was stupid. I reinstalled EEI and the expansion about a week ago though!
