So I have this HP Pavilion Piece Of Shit machine.  Yes, the same one Buzz told me to return in July of '06, but I didn't listen then, and I'm paying for it now.

It runs -ran, in unison now,  . . .  Windows XP Media Edition.  Not looking for tech advice really, I just wanted to vent about it, and you all seem to revel in my problems.  Schadenfreude is the word you're looking for.

Anyway, it died some months back which prompted me to start building my Gaming Rig #1.  Whut wants a new video and all of my stock footage and sound crap is on that machine.  So I have been trying to troubleshoot it for the last five hours now while watching TV.

It's an HP Pavillion with an AMD dual-core, 3800 processor, I think, with a gig of ram.  Not sure who makes the mobo, but it has ABAE-LE stamped just under the PCI-E x16 slot there.  It also has some chips stamped by VIA and ATI, but I still can't tell who makes it.

Symptoms:
Hit power button, Windows says bad startup, would you like to run in safe mode, graphics safe mode, last known settings, normal start up.

Whatever option I choose, Windows starts to load, then it freezes about ten seconds later and I have to do a hard powerdown by holding the power button until it turns off.

I checked all the connections, popped out the memory and blew a can of Dust-Off all over the place, reseated memory.

No prob, I thought I would just use a Linux LIve CD to start it.  I used Ubuntu, because it came in the mail today and ran the memory test on the CD for like an hour with no hiccups.  Satisfied, I exited and Ubuntu started to load, then froze 10 seconds later. Same thing with Ubuntu in safe graphics mode.

I went into the BIOS -no problems getting there, changed the graphics device to the original onboard device, since I returned the vid card that lived in that machine.  Same problem.

I disconnected the hard drive, which felt kinda warm, which shouldn't have made a difference anyway since the Live CD loads itself into memory and bypasses the HD.  Same deal.

I pulled out a Puppy Linux Live CD which has like a 80 Mb footprint, yes 80 Megabytes, which loads completely into memory and is the smallest distro I have with a Live CD startup option.  Same thing, it starts to load, then ten seconds later it freezes requiring a hard powerdown.

So I have been staring at it for the last 30 minutes thinking of my next course of action, which will be tomorrow since I want to go play TF2 for a few hours now. I wouldn't even bother with this machine except that Whut is probably crying in a corner because I haven't given him his vid like I promised.

Possible solution is to just pull the HD, since that is not the problem, if it still works and I haven't fried it, and drop it into an existing machine as a slave.  End of story.

But it just nags at me that I can get to the lower level functions of the mobo, just not past the loading of the OS, any OS.   I haven't investigated yet whether a mobo would function with a bad CPU, but I'm fairly certain you need a working CPU to get a mobo to work properly even at the BIOS setup stage.

I have a brand new AMD dual-core slot mobo that came free with a processor I purchased - it has a PCI-E x16 slot that can only run in x8 mode, yes x8 mode, so I can't use it for gaming.  I could hook it up a good power supply, drop the CPU from the HP and an AM2 socket fan, with thermal paste of course, a CD ROM drive and one of the live CDs.  If it freezes, then I know it's a bad CPU.   I can then pop in a good CPU and see if the mobo still works with the same setup.

Or I can take a good CPU and pop it onto the HP mobo, but then I could lose a good CPU if the mobo is bad, so the option above would be the best bet to start.  Of course I will test the power supply on the HP, I just can't find my tester in all the junk I have strewn about.

If I am going to lose a new component, I would rather it be the mobo that is useless for gaming over a good CPU that is useful for gaming. The CPU would come from Gaming Rig #2, which is in limbo at the moment.

Anyway, I think the HP still has a good HD, and DVD/CD burner and CD ROM.  Probably a good PSU.  One or both the mobo and CPU is bad, probably.

I'll keep you posted, but no point in chiming in when I haven't done all the proper diagnostic work yet.

OCD and computer building/fixing is a really bad combination. . .

motherboard is asus, also, i would replace the ide cable, remove any pci cards, and disconnect all usb/firewire/media reader plugins internally, also, 80 mb is too much, just use "damn small linux "- 50 mb )

LOL!

DSL -Damn Small Linux works, sort of.   I had replaced the IDE cable and pulled the network card and all the USB, Firewire and other connections that weren't the power button cables.  DSL didn't work, then I tried it in the most minimal mode possible with hardly any devices recognized.

That is, I ran the DSL Live CD, hit F3 and booted the "lowram" command. It runs with no USB, no SCSI, etc.   I chose Xvesa as the DSL X setup by hitting Cancel.  It actually opened the OS desktop and was able to run all the programs including Firefox, but for some reason the LAN device was not recognized, even though I enabled it on subsequent startups.

Not really sure what the problem is.  Can't test the CPU on another mobo or another CPU on the mobo even though it's an Athlon Dual-Core since I have access to another CPU and mobo.  However, the damn thing is a 939 Socket, and all I got is AM2/Socket 8 devices.

I'm waiting on one of my guru friends to call me back to let me know if he has any spares.  He probably won't call me back and buying another 939 Socket CPU or mobo is out of the question.  Damn things are expensive and not worth it to me.

So I'm waiting on a response from my non-answering guru or another flash of inspiration on how to fix this problem or ditch it altogether.  In the meantime, I leave you with a pic of my half-grand machine loaded with the most minimal DSL OS with every device disabled, playing a game of Tetris.

I should have listened to Buzz when he suggested that I return it and get my money back.  I'm such a loser.

Oh and for future reference -- you want to avoid any/all computers pre-built like that.

I don't care if it's HP or E-Machine or whatever. They're all garbage. At the very least, they'll have stuff that's all-in-one.

For instance, IBM's would have it so the motherboard, graphics card and audio card were all the same piece o' crap inside, so you couldn't upgrade. If you want to upgrade, then you have to buy a new computer. Save yourself the headache, and build it yourself. You might spend a little more, but it'll give you piece of mind, you'll learn something, it's easier to upgrade and you can do what you want and put in what you want.

Ja, I have two that I have finished building that can play TF2 and a third that will play TF2, but it will only be 8" x 9" x 5" or more like 3.5" if I can make a flexible PCI-e riser work within the yet-to-be-built Lexan case.

The power supply checker I used on the HP power supply said that the -5v connector was not functioning.  When I used a new 480W PSU, the board would not power up and I quickly unplugged it because the fan was not turning even though power was flowing.  The new PSU tests fine.

And this machine was one I purchased in '06 to play HL2DM without wanting to spend the money on a new machine.  I think it was five or six Bennies without a monitor.  I can build an 8800 GT-based machine from scratch for that amount of mula.

Nope, never again. I only am messing with this because I thought it would be an easy fix and it's the only machine that has Firewire, which I can add to any machine with a card for like $25.  It also has all the other crap I need to make Whut's vids.

This is pro advice.  What Horsie is talking about is intergrated boards.  This is their way of saving money but fucking you on quality parts and the ability to replace them.

I have custom build my own computer since  I was 15.  Sure you pay about twenty percent more than an out of a box computer but you get 200 percent more computer.  You can also build them to suit their new jobs.

If you are building a gaming computer you want to focus on getting rid of any possible bottlenecks.  This is huge.  Some people buy a dell, put a better videocard in it and waste their money because the computer cannot utilize its performance.   This is true with RAM, CPU's and HD's.  I've seen a lot of scary shit in the past when helping friends fix and build rigs.

some people just don't want the hassle though ( i know people who've build PCs before and say f*ck it, i'm not bothered. it's so easy to order a Dell, go online, click a few checkboxes and one week later a brand new PC turns up at your door. and seeing as 90% of people never use their computers to their full capacity anyway, you have to say what's the point?
yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

I have to agree.  That's how I ended up with the crappy Pavilion - well, I went into Fry's Electronics to get the HL:Episode One game which was on sale for $13 and ended up dropping fire or six Bennies for the Pavilion because my laptop didn't match the minimum spec requirements of the game.

You have to start with the vid card, as good as one as you can buy without it stinging too much, then build around it if you're going to game.  I have two of three machines built that way now, and all I have loaded on one is Steam, TF2 and an anti-virus program in addition to the bare-bones Windows OS.

My laptop (Nov. 2002) runs everything I need for work and then some.  It just won't run TF2. Other than playing TF2, I have no need for any other computer beyond what my laptop can do.  And there's the cock-rub.  I need to play TF2, so, like a junkie, I needed a new machine(s).  This is all post-Pavilion.

I just had a convo with a female friend who says her eMac?, whatever that is, has a blown tube and she was told that she would either need to replace the cathode tube or she could just hook up a monitor to it.  Oh, IMac?  The one with the computer built into the CRT screen?  Anyway, I explained that if that's what they told her could be done, then she could just find an old CRT monitor with a VGA connector shaped like an isosceles trapezoid.  A trappa-what?

Silly me, I forgot she was a girl, a smart one in all areas, except basic math.  I tried to explain it to her over the phone but she claimed her eyes were glazing over and that we should meet for beers tomorrow so I can draw it out for her.  I'm just going to bring a damn VGA cable to show her, but then again, I think I'm missing the point now that I think about it.  She wants to meet me for beer so I can describe something to her in person that she can find easily on the internets.

-I sure am dense sometimes. This is one time when knowing something about computers isn't repulsing a member of the opposite sex.

Gentlemen, I do believe I am going to get my pole waxed tomorrow afternoon.

If all you want is the files off the HD then remove it and plug it in your new comp.

Uh, I'm standing right here.  In some cultures, it's impolite to speak of someone in the third-person when they're standing right in front of you.  Did you take lessons from one of my former gfs or what?

Firewire.  It's the only machine I have with firewire.  My musical interface needs a firewire port, and I don't want to get another card.

Besides, it's broken, and it should have been a five-minute fix, two days ago.  What part of OCD do you not understand?
