Yeah, tonight we had some lag issues. This is because the eternal silence server and scrim server were packed as well.

It's time to drop a tf2 server, two of them always sit empty anyway, the most I can ever get full are three. I never see all four bumpin.

I am planning to merge Tempest 1 and 3. It will be tempest 1, custom and official maps. I will also be heavily pruning the custom maps in the rotation to provide only high quality custom maps, while leaving the lesser quality ones available for voting.

I will not be removing the eternal silence server, as I will be rocking that shit when 3.0 comes out and I want to remain established as basically the only ES provider with a playerbase.

Your thoughts?

The eventual plan for this summer is this:

We've got some serious work coming up for our little company. We stand to make a bit of cash which we plan to reinvest into the community. The plan is to buy three 1u quadcore servers to take up our 3u colo cabinet space.

This will allow us to do an assload more hosting. Currently, however, we're stretched too thin.

So, while we're on the verge of collapse in the short term, I'm going to remove #3 unless someone can give me a solid argument as to why I shouldn't.

I'll let you remove it

Will it save money? Or are you just going to use that server for something else?

It'll reduce hardware load which has been causing the lag spikes. There's no financial reason for doing this.

I'm curious because our older servers didn't experience lag spikes even with 4 servers going. Is there an ulterior factor, i.e. higher load from elsewhere, that's causing a drain on the servers?

Just trying to think of some explanations.

Merging #3 and #1 are a good idea IMHO. People are always yelling 'steamroll' or 'warpath' on #1 anyway.

We downgraded. We were renting a server box from AoWC. We own this server. The procs are slightly less powerful.

Like I said, we are planning out a mega upgrade in the summer. But... right now we're making due with what we have.

This current server is plenty powerful to run what we need, and I think four tf2 servers is getting excessive for the amount of traffic we've been seeing lately. If we can get three of them full consistently then I'll re-add it.

The current server runs all of the websites we host, as well as houses database stuff for our business. Nothing too serious though, at least in regards to affecting server performance.

The problem has been servers sharing cpus.

There are four cpus. There are six servers. When two servers on the same CPU fill up, it has to distribute the load evenly. This causes the lag because the servers aren't getting the full power of the CPU.

So there.

Thanks for clearing that up. I am always curious on how things work hence my persistence.

Do 4 empty servers take more load than 3 half full servers? If so, I'm all for cutting one down because then it's just impractical given our traffic patterns.

Suggestion about your other post: You know that text that periodically comes on, like 'cake is a lie'? I've seen some servers put their donation information on there, especially the goal $ and the current amount. I think having the numbers on there might encourage more donations, as people who sometimes play on the servers don't visit this site (as lovely as it is), hence they're unable to note that this place runs on donations and not enlarge-your-penis ads. Also, linking the fragging experience with the donate info will motivate me to donate more.

I know you don't like to make people uncomfortable which I agree with 100%, but having the info there for those that need it is good too. Just an idea.

Edit: We might already have the Donate message on there, but I don't remember seeing the specific numbers.

There are already three scrolling ads for donation related issues. Do we need more?

I am reluctant to put the current donation amount or the goal because I'd have to constantly change it as donations rolled in.

Sometimes you have to prune a limb to make room for stronger growth.

I say trim out one, get people used to a great player experience in the pDs community, then grow when the season is right.

No sense in keeping them all and driving away new folks due to lag and such that they do not understand.  They do not know the hardware configuration or how it used to be, they just want to shoot you in the face with their gun.

Being in the service industry (I fix computers at our corp HQ) it is all about the customer experience and delivering the best to get them to come back and enjoy being part of your whatever.

Lag is a big issue so if it helps . . .

If am home during the day and #2 is full, I jump on to one of the empty ones and wait.  Within 10 minutes I can usually get enough people to turn on HLSTATS.

Even if you don't intend to play for very long, seeding an empty server by jumping on can get it jumping for the rest of the day.
You should be more like Cantrip.

Lag does seem to turn away a lot of new players. I'm all for this merge. However, how are you going about the pruning? Perhaps you should put all the maps up for vote (via the same system used in the tournament signup thread) and keep the top 5 or so?

Agreed.  Merge is fine.   Given the quote above can we get rid of Oopsie as well?

Think this is a great idea, it is true we never see 4 tf2 servers full, dropping it will just make all our other servers run that mutch beder wich will bring more peeps on in the long run

Tempest 3 has now become tempest 1.

Tempest 1 is closed.
