My wife was given a laptop.  What is the absolute best way to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows XP?  Laptop for wife + less time for her on my desktop = more gaming time for me.  You see why I want it just right.

Do you still have your windows installer disk? Because if you don't it's going to be a hella lot harder to reformat the drive.

I recently did this and it's pretty pain-free except for the waiting time.

You should just boot from the disk, and use the formatting protocol from the disk. The thing you should do is press 'D' for delete so your C: drive is wiped clean. Make sure all your partitions are unpartitioned. THen click 'C' for create a partition and then go ahead, and install windows on it.

I forgot what the names were exactly but it should be pretty intuitive.

I was going to post this exact same thing, but then I thought it was extremely nerdy.

The best, but slow way of doing it is, low level formating and what it does is write zeros to the drive and make it like it was brand new and never used before. But the way the was stated before is a faster way of doing it.

Thanks for all the help.  Went off like a champ.  Up and running but I cannot connect to the internet.  It has built in wireless and I have a Linksys router.  I have tried setting it up with my thumb drive but when I put it back in my desktop it says something about an error and it might be my router that is preventing it from being set up.  I knew when I got it that there was an issue about connecting to the internet but I figured it must be software based and reinstaling windows would fix it.  You guys know more about this than I do.  Should I just buy a card for the laptop and do it that way or am I missing something?

IT sounds like you need a driver or the latest wireless software. Usually this comes in a CD. But I'm sure you can hunt for this online.

You have to find the make/model of your card, and hit that up on google. To find the model, you go to the device manager under System which is under Control Panel. Just type in the model in a search engine, like SYS 23-53-2424 and you should find the software.

Ok all done.  I had to take the card out of my laptop and put it in.  I will get around to getting another one.  Thanks for all your help.
