Alright...I've been accepted to go back to college to finish my 4-year degree.  School starts at the begining of May.  Yesterday, I told my boss' boss (the Area Supervisor) that I'll be leaving my job in a month.  I've put in applications to be a part time bank teller and as of yet, have not heard anything.  My Supervisor gave me an opportunity to demote myself to a shift manager position and work at a store that's much closer to my place.  Either way I go, I'll be at my current position and store until the end of April...I am trying for teller positions because it is closer to what I am going for with school...and the hours are better...I wouldn't be working till 2 in Goddam morning.

Background Bullet Points...

  • I have my 2-year degree (A.A.S.) in Restaurant Management, I am going back to school for Accounting
  • I currently work at Arby's as a First Assistant Manager
  • I have worked there for just over two years and have had no raises or promotions, I make the same amount, and am in the same position I was when they hired me
  • To answer your question about the previous point...Yes, my butthole hurts after being in the same position for two years
  • can't think of anymore bullet points...

What sounds like the better option?  Stay with the company, demote myself to a different store with a cooler General Manager?  or...Bank Teller?

Anybody here have current/ previous teller experience they can share?

what to do, what to do...

I'm [not] thinking Arby's.
Get the bank teller position. The bank will have more potential for promotions as well as being a better resume builder. You'll also have a good environment to scope out a better job post-graduation since many doors open after you get that important piece of paper. The fast food thing is a dead end.

Depending on compensation, I might suggest keeping your current employer and keeping your time with the company growing.

On the other hand, would you rather smell like meat or money at the end of the day?

I would deffinatly say banking, u usually start with some preaty good benefits, promotion/benefits are granted to you after about 6 months, and they tend to get beder every 6 months after that until for 1.5 years. then you cap off. Then next step they possition after the 1.5 year mark is a preatty good promotion wich pays 30% more then were u are at... so i would say the banker for sure especially if u think u will be there for maybe 2 years or more. Heh i know this because one of my reletives runs a Huge bank.  About 70% of all the diff banks out there follow this promotion procedure.

I have 15 years in banking.  My advice: Run, man, run.  Just kidding.  Donk is right.  Banks, especially the big boys, tend to have great benefits.  Wages on the other hand are not going to be that good, especially in a teller position.  If this is your chosen career path then I would say go with the teller position, learn as much about banking as you can, take any training class that is offered, get your degree and then go job shopping.

One drawback is no more all you can eat curly fries.  Mmmmmm .  Side note:  Why did Arby's change thebread they make the subs with?  I love the French dips but not as much as before the change.  Anyway sorry for that rant.  I am hungry.  Good luck.

Back in the day I started for Target Corp pushing carts in the parking lot and over the total of 8 years there I worked my way up to a nice salary position just under managing my own store, with prospects of running multiple stores. (sacrificed happiness for stress though)

Time with a Co. does look good on a resume.

The bank position would look nice too considering the degree you are going for.

At your current job have you expressed interest in taking on a higher position. I'm asking this because unless you have a very proactive boss that takes part in the development of his subordinates it will most likely be assumed that you are comfortable in your current position. I would inquire about it with your supervisor and see. If it turns out that the ladder your attempting to climb is crowded a lateral move to a similar wage with a greater chance to learn more skills might be the greater benefit.

Even with prospects of greater achievments at my previous employer I choose to leave and pursue what made me happy. (Music/Computers)

In certain situations an individual with a variety of skills is more valuable(hireable) that an individual whom is an expert at one thing in particular.

That would be his call.  Some people can, some can't.  Do what you gotta do to get that degree.

they changed the bread because of the new pass-through toasters...Arby's is using ciabatta bread for that and didn't want to use the old bread...

I haven't really expressed interest to get promoted...it seems my supervisor wants me to learn and get promoted, but the GM of my store is a Douche that doesn't give half a shit about what skills I learn...most of what he cares about is how fast the food is getting out the damn drive-thru window...truth be told i didn't really want to work for arby's, but when I took the job I had been un-employed for three months after leaving a management position running a Subway...I didn't have any other prospects when I got the Arby's call and have just been biding my time ever since...

true, but in my own experience though, very few can do it without it impacting their degree. grades do suffer, studies have shown it. it's something that should always be taken into consideration.

I am the restraunt manager where I am at KFC.

Prizsm Ventures Assosciation (PVA) Will be selling the stores and that means my Area manager will be out of a job. So he treating everyone like shit. I am Going to Starbucks and getting an assistant manager position, and i hear they pay more?! with less bullshit, but more politics, and people skills is my Forté.

If you want my advice, EAT AS MUCH Arby's as you can, get REALLY FAT (like me) and go back to school and starve,in the end it will be alot more beneficial.

With love

The very base amount that a "vault teller" makes in Ohio, according to collegegrad.com is around $26,000, and then there's the bonuses. Not sure if thats more than what you are making now, but as others had mentioned, the fast food pipeline is kind of a dead end, and theres much more potential with a bank teller positiion and the good chance of getting promoted.

Not entirely true. I've been going to college full time (16-19 units varying) for 2 years now, working at my store until 1 in the morning... (once you hit midnight one hour ain't that big a difference.)

Being at a store that has those kinds of hours allows you to work full time AND go to school full time. Sleep can wait till spring break (now for me... heh) and summer.

Also, I've been considering becoming a bank teller but a certain notorious bank in this country turned me down, probably because I gave them shitty availability thanks to school (I mean, fuck I don't even know when bankers LEAVE... I just know when the doors lock up... =[)

As far as your particular situation I would advise GETTING THE FUCK OUT OF ARBYS. Capitalized for emphasization, not because I'm trying to be a dick. Being an accounting major, and working at a bank kinda go hand in hand. I myself am considering Accounting... what school do you go to?

Working in a bank would dovetail with your school plans for accounting and would be a good networking opportunity.  I did restaurant work a long time ago and have never looked back on it with any fondness.
