Too lazy to read this entire thread but generally before you get Lazorz Eye surgery your vision needs to have stabilized. Thats why they dont give it to kids because their vision is still altering. Im no optometrist but I believe they would say something similiar to that. Other than that though Lazor eye surgery works.

Yup, Well looking at his XFire profile hes 40, so I guess It would have stabilized.

Yeah, the magic number they like to see is 45 for the lense replacement.  Although it could I don't suspect my vision will get much worse.  I already have to be careful going outside with my glasses on.  The sun has burnt it's share of my eye lashes.  Like ants and a magnifying glass.  That is an exaggeration but it is probably close to it.

I don't use xFire. I've never used it. Whose profile are you looking at, lol? But I'm still a few years away from the 'magic number' of 45, so I guess that's the answer.... didn't expect I'd have to wait any longer then this.

Aside from the news, thanks guys. I appreciate all the advice.

OK I had Lasik...

First of all, do not be concerned with the corneal flap... it completely heals in 6 months nerves and everything...

However, if your vision is still deteriorating, it is not really a good idea.  Basically Lasik is the same thing as getting a "Permanent Contact Lense"

So if you get cut, and your vision deteriorates further, you basically will have to wear glasses....

So until your vision stabilizes, basically you go back to your optometrist and they give you practically the same prescription you aren't a good candidate for Lasik.

I would suggest going to Lasik+ or a TLC center, they give free exams and you can tell them about your vision changes.

I mean it would basically suck to pay 3,000 and then have to deal w/ glasses anyway.

My mom and uncle had Lasik done before the FDA approved and regulated the procedures.

She got 3 operations and now her vision still isn't perfect...  She has to wear lenticular glasses, which are like 400 a pop.

Now Mom is also past the magic 40 mark... after the age 40 your eye looses its ability to change shape and focus from near to far... this is called

prescopia... I probably spell that wrong but I don't care...

Anyway, this is why people over 40 need 'reading glasses' because they eye physically cannot focus on very near things any more... Lasik can do nothing for this.

If you are near the age 40, you may end up with glasses anyway so may not be worth it.

Now me, I was 24, spending a few hundred a year on contacts....

So I did some math... basically in about 10 years, I will have paid for my Lasik by not having to buy stupid contacts any more....

Plus I don't have to screw with contacts, and all that kind of crap.... it wasted so much damn time...  And I didn't take them out like I was supposed to so my eyes didn't get quite the oxygen they were supposed to, and blood vessels were engorging themselves around my iris, lolozlacopter...

Now on the lighter side of Lasik... I saw some discussion about how awesome lasers are... and yes they are awesome... however, they are widely known to be a pirate's weapon of choice.... now I mention pirates because usually when a laser is around you are likely to find a pirate...

Now as mentioned previously, there will be slicing of the cornea... and we all know how much Ninja's love to slice shit up...

And now I think you can see where this is going... recipe for disaster... Ninajs and Pirates....  DO NOT GET ALONG.....

So just make sure wherever you go that the practice managers aren't foolish enough to let a ninja slice your eye and a pirate operate the laser... otherwise we likely will not hear from you again....

I'm no authority on eyes myself, but I ran your situation by my father, who is an eye surgeon (doesn't perform LASIK himself, however, only cataract surgery).  He said he was limited in what he could offer, not knowing more of the specifics of your situation, but he said that if your eyes are still changing, that would be a good reason NOT to do LASIK at this point.  Also, keep in mind that optometrists frequenty large referral/post-operative fees for referring someone to have LASIK done.  My dad says he would need to know more about your situation, age, refraction, etc. before he could advise you with any certainty.

He also mentioned several negative things, that the biggest lawsuit awards in the eye surgery profession have been in LASIK, and that there is a major government investigation into LASIK currently and its tendency to cause dry eye syndrome.

Finally he concluded that you should probably see an ophthalmologist (as opposed to optometrist), preferrably one that doesn't himself perform LASIK, to get the most unbiased advice possible.

For my part, having read the other posts in the thread, the descriptions and general information on the different procedures seems accurate enough, but I didn't have enough time to go into that kind of depth with my dad.  Suffice it to say he'd urge caution (if not outright discouragement).
