I've caught my coworker looking at job websites, hes been taking sick days (both me and our receptionist believe he's using it for interviews), and he's getting phone calls on his cell left and right...which he quickly gets up and runs outside to talk. I also plainly saw his screen today as he ran out for another call as he forgot to minimize everything, and it was a bunch of jobs he was looking at. Ok, so its obvious, he's planning on leaving and going somewhere else.

He's never been a great worker to begin with. He's always half an hour late, leaves right at 5:30, and takes 2 hour lunches on average. When he does work, he's slow/late, does a poor job, can't think for himself, and just all around sucks.

To make a long story short, I told my dad last night, he told the pres. of the company while having drinks at a bar about an hour ago. No they're not butt buddies, my father invested in the company and the company is having an investors meeting down in Miami right now.

I understand its not on my shoulders, but should I be worried? I don't want to be seen as a backstabber even though I didn't directly tell the president of the company. It was also  my fathers idea to let them know, which I'm sure they're aware of.

This situation exists because the guy is being dishonorable, not you.  Whatever happens, he brought in upon himself and he alone bares the responsibility.

IMHO, of course.

If it were just him looking for a new job now and then, I'd let it be. There's nothing wrong with a person looking to see what's out there. Him looking out for his own future doesn't make it a betrayal to his current employer. If he's not happy working where he is then it's in everyone's interest for him to leave, anyway.

However, if it's indeed affecting his performance at the office then it'd be a legitimate thing to bring up. But it sounds like you could report quite a bit without even mentioning the fact he's looking for another job; just say you've seen him browsing and taking an excessive amount of phone calls.

He's a half assed worker in the first place does not sound like you are friends, sounds like he makes everyone else cover his ass. Yes you should have told your dad to tell the prez. Or at least tell your manger and get him kicked out so someone that really needs a job can get in.

There nothing wrong with looking for a new job while under a diferent employer. As long as you havnt signed a contract with stipulations regarding say certain types of itelectual property that bar you from working for a different emplyer in the same field ...etc.

I've been at jobs where I have looked for another job..if your a good company there are business that will headhunt your employees and try to aquire them from you. Movement in the job market is nesessary. Hell, I have even told my bosses "I'm looking for something better". That typicaly ended up with either a raise/promotion for me.

His performance IS the thing that should be addressed.  His looking for another job might be something that your company might want to encourage if you feel his performance does not match his compensation.

if he is being that indiscreet then it seems the odds are good others have noticed as well? if so then it's not like he can trace it back to you. sounds like his ass will get fired anyway so if its backstabbing its back stabbing someone who is fucking you and your employer. you should sap his dispenser too while he isnt looking.

Looking for another job WHILE on the clock at a job is not the way to do it.  Calling in sick days to take interviews is NOT the way to do it.  Taking many personal calls while on the clock is NOT the way to do it.

It sounds like he is an idiot and is milking this current job.

If he is conducting personal business while on the job, he is taking away from this job and creating slack for others to take up.  He has sown his seeds, now let him reap them.

"On the clock" means different things in different places.
Me.. I can wonder in any time I want in the morning and usually only work 7 hour days in the office. I stayed home on Friday and just did some maintenance work online since I worked a full shift this past Sunday.

I guess I am assuming he's salary, which fundamentally means you get paid more to get projects done on time than you are to work every single second you're in the office. But as I said, if taking personal calls and days off is preventing him from getting his projects done, then yeah... that's an issue. And chances are the boss or project manager would already know about it. But if he is somehow getting his job done then well... I wouldn't care if he naps for half his shift, so long as he doesn't snore.

The president knows now so let it go.  If he thinks it is that big of a deal then he will deal with it.  If he does not think it is a big deal and you say something to him then it might make you come off bad.  I agree with the other post that this guy does not care about his current job but it is best if his circumstance work out naturally without any outside influences.

Hey all, I just want to thank you for the advice. You all have good points about what to do, and why I should/shouldn't care. Anyways, I imagine today is going to be interesting, but my game plan is not to say anything unless I'm asked. What would really be interesting is if he called off "sick" today. It's already 8:46 (supposed to start at 8:30), and he's not here. FYI, we are salaried...but being here on time still matters for the purposes of answering the phones, posterity, etc.

Man its been an interesting day:

1. The guy resigned today. He leaves at the end of the month.

2. As of this morning, I'm going to LA tomorrow, and will be in Ca for the next 2 weeks. SFO on the weekends.

3. They wanted me to get a Blackberry so I can have 24 hour email (needed for work). So now I have one, they paid for it.
