They make it sound like viruses are capable of choosing an operating system.

Maybe they failed to mention that PC's get more viruses because there are a shitload more PC's than macs....

That excuse is just as culpable for explanation as the fact that Macs are also far more secure. Most pro-PC people tend to overlook this fact.

I have yet to see a single mac person not complain about how many viruses they get.
I have had about four computers and none of them have been hit by viruses (all PC's).

Also, every time I use a mac and try to do anything above a browser or itunes, it ends up crashing within half an hour and gives absolutely no reason as to why...

I can't help but imagine this as being 1) an old-ass Mac, 2) an isolated incident, or 3) a made-up attack on Macs.

Now, this isn't an attack on you, but I only ever hear about these kinds of things from people who are trying to be against Macs. The Mac community, within itself, is rather truthful.  To the pro-PC guys when we're debating, we tend to be, of course, rather optimistic.

So, within ourselves, cases of Macs crashing constantly "crashing within half an hour" are resolved by taking it in to the Apple Store. Failing this, a direct letter usually nets a positive reply - usually a complete replacement or other ways of fixing the problem.

I think the "browser or iTunes" argument is just a play on the fact that Macs' two biggest programs (that PC people hear about) are iTunes and Safari.

Were I any closer to you, I'd invite you personally to use my Mac for two weeks. I guarantee you that your viewpoint would change within this time frame. I don't guarantee you'll switch, but you'll at least see differently. Any Mac user will tell you this.

I was a Mac hater. Then I had to use and provide support to Macs. If I had the money to blow I'd have whatever the top 'o the line MacBook is.

mac=ok

Sure mac's can suck and crash and have viruses.....so can mid to low range pcs, even top state pc's. I'd argue that a typical mac runs smoother only for the argument that their usage is far more streamlined on both the user side and the platform side. The majority of comps out there are pc's, meaning the type of person to open a random e-mail stating "I love you" is going to be on a PC. Does this mean pc's or macs are better? Don't think so, I'm pretty sure both can suck and both can rule. It's entirely dependant upon the actual unit's specs as well as the specs of the user using it. I'm a pc guy, I'll respect mac's but would always feel too confined using one. I'm glad to use mac's when working on certain graphic applications, but for the most part I just prefer the fact that I can toast my PC by doing stupid stuff to it, rebuild it, and go about trying to break it again.

Having a debate about Macs are more secure than Windows based computers is totally useless.

Both operating systems regularly release security updates. On either a Mac or a Windows update, read the technical release notes. All of them have to do with exploits that have been found and backdoors that have been closed.

The truth about computer viruses is exactly the same delema as the activity in the softtare piracy world: You can create as much protection as you want, but once someone cracks it once, youre done.

Bioware (a division of EA games) recently released Mass Effect for PC. Bioware claimed that with its state of the art copy protection, Mass effect would be harder to pirate due to various countermeasures, such as the game verifying itself normally. Needless to say, this proved utterly useless, as after less than 1 week of the games initial release, it was cracked and distributed on peer to peer networks.

The relevance is that once you run an installer, once you approve an error message, you have just given your computer a command. Determaning if that command is legitimate or not is your best virus protection.

Yes, PCs can get viruses. Yes, Macs can also get viruses. Neither one will get a virus if you have a little self control on the internet.

Ive been using macs for roughly 17 years of my life. my family has as well. not once has any of us had an issue with a virus. most of the time, the issues involve companies that no longer support the mac platform. this is easily resolved by switching them to a different product, that generally has far better support and capability than what they were using before. right now I use both Mac and pc, cause well, i dont have the cash to buy a new mac with the specs i want.

to add to this, I worked in one of the busiest apple store in the US for 6 months. not ONCE did i get a complaint about viruses, and if youve ever been to a busy mac store, you know there is always a line at the genius bar. most of the time, this is actually some idiot who cant work an ipod and refuses to get directions. some other times a part simply gave out, which happens to all computers.

and of course you havent been hit by a virus, i assume youre a responsible user as are most people here!

the bottom line is this: of course pc's have viruses. Of course Macs do too. and you'll stay clean if you know how to prevent them. as far as teh crashing issue goes, the only apple programs ive ever had crash on me were actually the PC versions....specifically itunes, which im hating and wishing i was on a mac right now. beyond that though, never actually had a crash. Granted this doesnt mean it hasnt happened, Im jsut stating that now you HAVE had a mac user who has never had a virus or crash issue. No, macs are no more "secure" than a pc, but they are statistically proven to have a far fewer amount of vulnerabilities. attribute this to wahtever you like, and of course Apple will put their best spin on it, cause well, its marketing and thats what they do.
