My main point, other than flushing out Avnar into a discussion, is taking 4 kids seems like a tragic, random, uncontrolled event.  Or if it was controlled, it wasn't random, and then the tragedy seems senseless, brutal even.

I have often wondered how such events can happen in a world controlled, as most of the adults in my childhood told me, by an all-powerful god who sees everything we do and even can hear my thoughts.  If that is the case, watching the forces of nature move onto a camp full of kids, either by his/her hand, or by lack of intervention, seems a cruel volitional act.

If that is the case, the idea, suggested by organized religion, that we must emulate an all-powerful god, or at least follow what the prophets or eye-witnesses to his presence have said are his words, seems a farce.

How fucked up is that?

Now, I could have chosen some random tragedy like coal miners getting buried in China or the U.S. versus an example where fifteen miners were rescued using a pressurized canister.

Or the faithful, poverty-stricken woman riding a metropolitan bus in a seat over the front wheel well holding her newborn baby in her lap.  The front tire blows, the steel radial cables in the tire whip up tearing a hole underneath the woman, wrap around the baby and yank it down through the floor to become one with the tangled tire, killing it instantly.

Or yesterday, the ten Pakistani border guards who happened to be manning the border crossing from Afghanistan into Pakistan when Al-Qu!da fighters crossed it, followed by bombs dropped by the U.S. Air Force, killing the fighters and the bystander border guards.

Or Patrick Swayze, or that Carnegie Mellon professor, who both, through no fault of their own caught the Pancer.

Then you have the opposite, where someone like say oh, I don't know, Os@m@ B!n L@d!n, does something so repulsive to onlookers that even Charles Manson would say "that's fucked up."

Or the Spanish Inquisition.  Or the Crusades.  Or the cancellation of the television series Firefly.

Either there is an all-powerful being who controls and intervenes or there isn't.  If there is, he seems pretty arbitrary.   How am I to emulate my life on his teachings or his actions if that is the case?

And blasphemy, the speaking ill of God or Religion, seems, in that case, like a convenient method of control of the masses.  Which might just be the point of man writing down God's words.

The ultimate answer in all this, the supreme knowledge or the absolute truth in all this, is -wait, what the fuck is up with your avatar?

.

As immature a manner in which the topic was broached upon (yes that was a prepositional phrase), I think this is a perfect case for which the atheist to once again challenge the believer.

The hard point for most to grasp is this: the burden of proof will squarely be on the shoulders of the believer, because he is the one who tries to get *me* to believe in his God. (Maybe not actively, but by believing, and living this belief, it is, in its own way, a passive method of covertism.)

So let's take a look at these 90 boy scouts. Or the 4 who died. Aged between 13 and 14 each. Each with his own family, his own parents, his own grieving parents who have no choice but to sit at home and cry for the next three months, and then force themselves to move on. And force themselves to forget. And force themselves to blasphemy their memories of their own son and try to make a life with a huge void, while simultaneously ignore that void.

The Boy Scouts of America is a group tied deeply with religion. There are boy scouts of varying degrees of belief; I, myself a non-believer, was a boy scout up until sophomore year of high school. The belief part was that which bugged me the most. "Family before self. Country before family. God before country." Something like that, IIRC.

So given these, we have 4 very naive teenagers who are obviously at least doing the work for God, if not fully believing. It was, in essence, a flavor of God camp, with knot-tying and rock-climbing and hiking in the forefront.

So, the question is asked again, why would God so mercilessly kill them?

Or, as Cantrip phrased it, Where was your God? (Yes, phrased as thus is a deliberate rejection of God, try not to get too offended by the implication.)

I know it's not our place to judge God, but we've all (well.. maybe not Lead Salad) hit the "age of reason" as it were and we can all think for ourselves. And history has shown just how dangerous it is to be told not to question the ultimate authority "Just because ____" followed by any variety of reasons.

I know we shouldn't question, I know we shouldn't judge, I know the very thought could be blasphemy. But the question stands.

Why. Where.

The burden of proof is on your shoulders. We seem to have a fairly large group of believers here in this community, so I'm hoping for a strong response from at least one of you, one that doesn't entail "The Lord does as the Lord wills" or "Mere mortal shall never know."

As mentioned before, it may have not been broached in a... mature / adult manner, but let's turn this ship around and try to get something going here. After two pages.

why ?..... shit happens there was a storm in Iowa the conditions where right for a tornado one formed happened to hit the camp by pure luck or unluck.. why is god even thought to have any involvment? would he need to steer every storm  on earth to assure one or 2 faithful that may die are not harmed? would you honestly even think a god of any kind would work that way? I am not a strict religueos person or even close.

Shit happens bad things happen to good people bad things happen to bad people .. like the gold medal winner"oh thank god i won this gold medal" bullshit you won it by hard work to think god would waste his time to make sure for some reason you win a race is  bullshit.

Have you read Thorton Wilder's The Bridge of San Luis Rey?

Pretty bad book in my opinion, but it deals with this sorta thing.

Yea, this one will probably do the same. I only brought it up because I had to read it for school a few years ago and it pertains to the topic at hand.

Catastrophes don't really belong in the debate between atheists and theists. I mean, of course all debates on god are futile since nobody ever concedes and the arguments are based entirely on speculation (not to mention running in the special Olympics). But catastrophes are especially irrelevant because atheists will imply that god must have some sort of motive, even though most religions either don't imply that god(s) have any motive (Buddhism, Taoism) or they imply that his motives are subtle or incomprehensible to man (Christianity, sometimes Islam, Hinduism) or that they or he is an outright asshole (Judaism, Norse Mythology) The bottom line is, unless you actually dragged a god down here to say whether or not he believes allowing catastrophes to afflict innocent people is good or bad, you can't argue for or against his existence based on this premise.
