Looking to upgrade to a new computer and I need some recommendations, and no I'm not going to build one:
1.) Quad core or Duo Core. (Sorry Intel only )
2.) XP or Vista(Yes i will pay the $50.00 for XP) I almost have to go with XP because of all the software and games I have.
3.) Single 9000+ series Nvidia with 1 GB or dual 8000+ series with 512 mb each(Is this overkill?).
Computer will be either an XPS 600 series or Alien ware Area 51 series with 24 inch monitor. There is ~$1000.00 difference between them so is Alien ware really worth it.
Thanks

1. Personal preference. You could technically go quad-core now and get some amazing performance for years to come, or you could go dual-core for the moment and upgrade to a more expensive CPU when the games of tomorrow begin utilizing more and more cores. 2. XP. 3. You're probably going to see a negligible performance increase (if any increase at all) by using an older chipset in SLI. Go for the 9000 series, and save some money. 4. Alienware rigs are renowned for being completely awesome gaming computers. Go for it! Win Cookies Awarded: 7 (bawwwwww)

1. Quad 2. XP 3. 48x0 series form ATI. Two 4850 cards beat the GTX 280 for $250 less and you get to use a chipset that doesn't blow. Single 4870 or 4870 CF is awesome also. For the love of god don't buy and 9 series card or either of the GTX 2x0 cards. The only nvidia card work consiring is the GTS 512 because it's relatively fast and dirt cheap. 4. NO, not at all. They are owned by the same company and use the same components. Just a different case and name.

You don't need extreme processing power for gaming. save your money.
All of my games work on Vista flawlessly. Some people still like XP, which is fine. Just keep in mind that support for XP ends next year.
I would reccomend an nvidia 8000 series card. the one I've got works like a charm, and has DX10 which is nice, but also requires Vista. TEAM APARTMENT: No one rocks quite as hard as we do. Thanks for the info. You have definitely given me some good options. You know the extra $1000.00 would pay for some Fox 2.0 coil over shocks for my larger buggy.

the best cards out there are the 260 and 280 cards that Nvidia has out 2 cards can play crysis at very high at 1600 x 1200 x4aa 16x anisotropic on. pc gamer of last month and this month says its on top, MaximumPC seams to like it as well and the benchmarks for the cards ar very nice. But the best bang for you buck card is the 8800 gt (G92) 512mb card.
I have the evga super clocked edtion card and can play very thing on high settting at 1280x1024 with out going under 30fps on crysis maxed out, unreal 3, world in conflict, bio shock, time shift, cod4 mw. Its a pci-x 2.0 ver also but my mb is only 1.0 right now. My 8800 gt cards does better than my friends 8800 gts 320mb ver.
Dont get the 9600 any ver at all there not much better the the 8600's out 9800 on up is good and the 8800 are good as well but the gt is the best valued out right now with its high shader clocksand core clock and its high memeroy clock as well. You can get and ati card but with 2 way sli and 3 way nvidia is the way to go now ati is not as good as the nvidia cards as of now. go to different site and look it up. and go dual core you wont need much more than that only very few games out now are able to use both cores very well. or if you encode alot a qaud core will be good for that, on the intel side of course. Lets let the graphs speak for themselves on this one. Just some costs for you firs though GTX 260=$400, GTX 280=$650, 4850=$175-$199, 4870=$300 Both from Anandtech's 4870 review

1. quad core 2. Vista Home Premium (It's what I have, had less problems than XP before vista service pack 1, with service pack 1 no problems) 3. Graphics are up to your preference and I will tell you why. a. ATI's 4870 does well on games that are done today, however... b. Nvidia's GTX 280 performs better on extreme levels of gaming c. There is no "right" answer for this. 4. With my experience, Alienware does have good systems, BUT THEY ARE FOR TWICE THE PRICE COMPARED TO DOING IT YOURSELF. If you want some good graphs, go to pc gamer, MaximumPC and look at there graphs the 260 and the 280 beat the ati cards, im not sure why deux has such a hard on for ati but stay away from them and Anandtech's 4870 seams to be maybe a 1 sided view. Those are the first grpahs were the ati cards have doane good at all so take the Anandtech's 4870 with a grain of salt. I run everything on Vista Ultimate 64-bit and have no issues. I have a Microsoft rep at work and can get it for $45. Yep, forty-five dollars! As for the hardware...set your budget first, then buy the best within that. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Also, my wife's laptop came with XP and I intend to make it Vista soon. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
