Slowly becoming a larger community we will undoubtly have to increase the size of our server admins to help patrollin the dirty. With too many new faces some of which ask for admin not everyone knows them well enough to vote as well as some people not trusting others with powers and keep the quality being held at par with WDF's rules. We are setting up new requirements to help us better and to make sure we don't pick people who shouldn't have powers in the first place due to attitude.

So the new admin requirements are as follows

 - You must have been active in this community for a minimum of 2 months, this is to help us better know you as we play ingame with you.
 - You must have a current admin vouch for you when you ask for server admin in your server admin application.

Anyone can ask thus we arn't limiting server admin to only {pDs} members but anyone who can handle the responsibilities and keep quality in the servers, and yes its that simple.

When you say vouch, does this mean that an admin posts in the application thread, unasked? Or could an applicant ask for a vouch from a current admin?

Just talk with a server admin and ask them to promote you in your app thread saying they agree you are worthy of the position.

Yay!
New guidelines and controls prove a continued interest in bringing in more admins!
I was starting to worry that the feeling was that there were plenty already. There do seem to be quite a few, but it sure doesn't feel like enough when you have someone cheating and there's none in-game.

Rik, just because there are no admins in-game, doesn't mean they aren't available.  As for me, whenever I'm home, whether or not I'm playing at the time, I always  have my Steam up, and am more than willing to jump into any game and lend a hand, should someone ask... I usually check to see if anyone has requested assistance about every 5-10 minutes if I'm not sitting at the Comp.  I know that a lot of the other Admins do the same.  I can almost always find Dragon, Splinter or Cantrip online, and Leon when  he was here too.. I'm trying to follow their example, so just check your Steam Friends to see who is online.. maybe that will help!

After the server admin app wave we got Ive been wanting to put in the new rules, regardless if we have enough admins or not its been bound to change the way we pick server admins for security reasons. I also find it funny all server applicants say theres never enough admins cause frankly I find that as a poor and overly used excuse for them to get admin powers.

Personally IMO I would honestly deny automatically anyone who says that cause I see it way to often.... actually almost all the time.

I don't see admin potential at all for those who instead of doing nothing but asking for an admin to go ingame and do something about so and so. Take the initiative, go to spec, record their actions if there arn't any admins around, and post it up on the forums as any already admin does. If you want admin SHOW IT. Theres more to being a server admin then just having an extra menu on your screen.

Theres more then 1 way to skin a cat so to speak, the more responsability you take on your own hands the much higher chance anyone has in becoming a server admin regardless if we have enough or not. Here in this community server admins take quality every time over quantity, cause quality is vastly much more important then having larger numbers.

Well, my personal reason for saying it is strictly experience. Many times I've seen problems and there haven't been admins online to handle it. And unfortunately due to my subscription type, I have little-to-no Community tools so I'm unable to look for other admins online and ask them to come in and take a peek. So the only path left to me to find an active solution to active problems was to request adminship. I can certainly spec and record demos for the forum (and just did yesterday), but that's very reactive as it's hard to say when an admin will see the post - it could well be after someone has ruined the game for everyone else and, if later at night, possibly sent everyone off to bed.

So when I say we don't have enough admins, it's strictly based on the fact that sometimes Tempest 2 will be completely full and there's none on. We could have 54,329 sitting logged into Steam, but that unfortunately does me, personally, no good. So it's frustrating wanting to keep a clean game for our visitors, but being unable to do much about it quickly.

Not trying to sound defensive or start an argument or anything; there's really no point to that. I just wanted to be specific.

I know but do you only look for admins ingame? Everytime I see my friends list I see at least 2-3 admins always online..... mind you my list is insanly large. Weither or not an admin is ingame or not shouldn't stop you from asking 1 who isn't ingame. As long as 1 is online is enough.... doesn't matter if they are in a game or not.

Keep in mind he never does this.. he admantly advocates for everyone who requests Admin to be voted on by the entire Admin population!

EDIT:  misspelled ADAMANTLY (sorry all you OCD folks like me out there)

No Community tools = no friends list = no messenger functionality. I gots pwned by Valve. Free games, no messenger.

Valve being oh-so helpful about it:

Have you tried uninstalling and re-installing your steam? (cant view link without logging in so I donno if you posted that). Ive never seen anyone with a steam client that doesn't already have working community functions. If your steam isn't showing the community tools/w/e it sounds corrupt and that your client hasn't updated at all.

Also please start a new thread about this, I don't want this thread going off course with personal dilemmas. Keep questions related only to the new requirements.

I've been through an entire OS reinstall, heh. No, the client's fine. And Community is there for my second, conventional Steam account. This is a specific behavior of the subscription type I have.

I must have logged into the site elsewhere since the link came right up.
Here's the gist from Valve:

Quote:

Hello Dave,
It appears that the issue for the rikaelus account Steams from the game subscription that is linked to the account. May I ask where you received this account from?

That's about as helpful as they were. You can view the image here: http://www.gamersyndicate.com/images/Steam.jpg

Hey you asked.
I half-assumed you'd delete all these tangent-posts, anyhow.. and I have nothing more to add, so feel free to.

To bring things back on topic a bit...

Splinter wrote:

Okay, I'll bite...

What do you feel is a proper reason for wanting to be an admin, then? Love of the kick/ban? Popular people just think he's cool? Wants more poW3rz? I think wanting to make the servers a better place is about the best reason you can find, and while "there aren't enough admins on" may be a common/lame excuse, the ultimate goal being expressed there IS improving the experience. I wouldn't say someone completely makes the case for being admin by offering up that reason, but the motive behind it is noble, and certainly shouldn't diminish the person's qualifications in any way, I shouldn't think...
