Well, everything has been said and done. Tuition has been paid for. At the time I thought I was absolutely certain that I want to study physics. Now, I've second guessed myself. I don't know what I want, wdfnews. I like computers and I like science, but I don't know what science I like best. I like it all too much. To be honest, I don't really care what makes more money. I just want to get a degree and get into research. Although It's just the first year at community college, right? Everyone says that community college is the best place to find out what you're interested in. But is it really plausible to weigh all of those choices in a modest time frame?

There's no rush at all. I've known people that have experienced/enjoyed drastic career changes, and they pay the bills and feed themselves like any can be expected. Do what you feel you do best. Where do you excel? What challenges do you enjoy? What kinds of things can you do that people would enjoy? Safety + Peace

some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don't know what they want to do with thier lives.
If I got paid for smoking cigarettes and drinking gin, I'd be a billionaire!

Actually, my dentist decided to change his career after 30 some odd years of dentistry. Unfortunately that postponed my wisdom teeth operation 6 days.. bastard

I'm taking a few fruity classes at a Community College right now. The kids there mostly don't have any idea of what they want to do. Of those that I have talked to that do have a clue, their choice doesn't seem to fit their personality or their apparent aptitude. The overwhelming reason for their going to a CC is to get the general education, the GEs, out of the way. I have to agree. Tuition in our state is lke ten times what it was when I was going to college, so you should take as many classes you can take that will satisfy a later required class at university. If you like science, you should still take those classes as they can be the basis for many other majors, and you really need those classes - especially if you're an atheist like Lead. You'll need the math classes in any major you choose that is science related. So, keep taking what you're taking if you like it as those classes will be useful and get work done on the GEs so you'll have more freedom later to focus on a major. Though I want to say that I'm not doing anything related to my major, it was useful for later work and it pads a resume, not that that is your motivation from what I can glean from your post. You should be more like Cantrip. Twitchy: "I pulled a Cantrip . . ." GivePeaceAChance: "If the Tempest had nipples, I'd pinch that shit." Xylicon: "I'm about to deliver my [Richard] in your face for posting that stupid shit. " WDF?: "He keeps reaming me... night after night... I'm rather sore." GivePeaceAChance: "OMG MY NIPS ARE HARD" llenta: "cantrip, you fail!!!" Filliam H. Muffman: "i'm on top of dick"

The best advice I ever heard came from one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the country. We offer tours of our facility to the local community college and on one of these tours, the owner of the company decided to give the tour personally. As they were beginning the tour he stop and turned to the students and said " Whatever you choose to do in life, you had better love it or you're fucked".

A lot of colleges now have co-op opportunities where you can try actually working in a fields before you spend 4 years of your life getting a degree in a field you find intolerable.
My son went to CC to get an associate degree in music technology, then has been doing an internship with a local live sound and recording company. He liked the schoolwork AND the actual work and is now going to get an audio engineering degree at Univ. of Michigan. Check with your adviser at the college to see if they have any co-op or work-study programs where you are. "I love the smell of napalm in the morning. Smells like ... victory"

I did the same thing dude, I spent my first 3 years saying "I am going to be an Electrical Engineer" only to find out that the life of an Electrical Engineer blows... So I stopped and now I am trying to find what to do with my life. I love computers, I love science... Just try to find out what ever makes you happy, and what you think you could do for a long ass time. EE wasn't something that looked fun 10 years from now... You have no rush.. first 2 years are just prep classes and fucking garbage. Find some clubs, scope out some places then go from there. Coming from a science background my self (working on my pHD in Chemistry) and knowing you want to do research, I would say go for the sciences, like physics, biology, or my favorite Chemistry. Also if research is your goal expect to get at least a masters degree in your field. If you stop at a BS you will get stuck doing monkey work, You know the job where you push a button all day, everyday for years on end. Not anyones idea of fun.
On the plus side after you receive your BS (in chem at least) you are PAID to go to graduate school. So thank you all american tax payers for paying me to go to school.

I feel bad for those who have to go to any college. I went straight into my career the night I graduated and have never looked back. I knew what I wanted to since I was eight years old and I had an aptitude in it. I'm taking an online class right now and can't even stand that. I don't know how anyone can do CC/Univ full time.. especially after 13 years of consistent school up to that point.
