In about a week and a half, I will begin my pre-mobilization training at Ft Dix, NJ. This should last roughly 1 month, then 4 days of leave then it's off to Kuwait for another 4 days then into our AO's (Areas of Operation). I'm looking into being in Tikrit, Iraq around mid October. I was recently given a HDD camcorder and purchased a 1 touch external DVD-RW drive designed to work without a computer, made specifically for HDD camcorders. With that said, I've been looking into this deployment not as an obligation, but an opportunity. I've been thinking about keeping a video journal of my deployment, beginning with pre-mobilization training all the way to post deployment. I will be able to use this video journal as part of my thesis for my major, Sociology by critically analyzing various radical cultures as well as the changes that occur in Soldiers while they serve oversees away from their families. I work with Psychological Operations, so my job doesn't mean I go around kicking down doors everyday. It actually gives me a chance to communicate and learn from the civilian/insurgent populous on a personal level.

What I need from you guys is some advice as to how I should approach this situation. I understand what I just asked is a pretty broad topic, but I'm open to any and all feedback. Oh, one thing in particular, are there any smaller cameras that I can mount into my ACH (helmet) that won't make it completely obvious that I'm using a camera?

Never forget you have both a moral and a legal obligation to refuse all unlawful orders. "I was just following orders" doesn't cut it at Nuremburg.

Only thing I could recommend is to study the countries culture via the internet. I think if you want to know people it should be important to know how they live. Knowing their religious aspects should help also.

Bottle watter can make a local into a friend in an instant.  Carry some around, but always have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

Actually it did work for a lot of soldiers.  High officers and the like, not so much, but soldiers?  You betcha.

But getting back to the topic, first thing is you must, absolutely must, get permission by those you may or may not be videotaping.  This is to make sure if you plan to do anything professionally with it, you got your bases covered.

Second thing is never allow the journal to get in the way of your duties.  I know I don't have to say it, but might as well.
