Give this old man your feedback... since many of you are close to this issue...

.

Help me scream at my generation...

.

The Crisis in America's High Schools

.

Imagine waking up one morning and learning that the entire population of Philadelphia or Dallas – cities with populations between 1.2 and 1.4 million – had disappeared overnight.

.

Would CNN, Fox News, and every major network immediately dispatch reporters to the scene? Would members of Congress and the president schedule press conferences to be among the first to address the story? Would everyone in the country be glued to their TVs and radios?

.

You know they would. Therefore, it's surprising that so little attention is being paid to another crisis – one that is just as newsworthy, but that largely goes unnoticed. Every year, approximately 1.3 million students – that's 7,000 every school day – do not graduate from high school as scheduled.

,

OK gamers... we're talking about dropouts... CNN stepped up to the plate and reported on this today... I was floored and baffled...

What do you think is the main reason you or your friends are doing this?

When you have such a high population in this country, even a small percentage of drop outs will equal a high number. It is so easy to not fail your classes in public school. My god, I knew some students who basically had to show up to get a good grade. Therefore my guess is either because of drugs or not caring. I understand other factors like bad family situations can cause a kid to drop out, but thats a much smaller percentage (I'm talking about the majority). We give our students far better chances to succeed in this country than elsewhere. If they don't want to show up to class and do homework, let someone else more deserving take their spot.

i have known several friends of mine that dropped out.  Reasons?  all of them because they started smoking pot and just stopped caring.  Number 1 reason guaranteed for high shcool drop outs is lack of motivation due to substance abuse.  It frustrates me to no end to continue seeing kids with great talent, go completely to waste all because of a damn herb.  Sure parental issues and whatnot could contribute, but most kids i knew that had these problems flocked to school to get away and then of course to drugs.  then pregnancy...why does this go unnoticed? well...frankly because i dont think many people care to see this.

Yes thats true, but I barely ever did any homework in high school and halfassed all my tests and managed to get into a decent college.

One of my best friends doesnt do any drugs, drink, or anything, hes just plain lazy. Hed rather play video games that hes played a million times than do his homework. Right now hes got i think 3 summerschool courses he has to take or he wont graduate. Hes not going to have an early release or late arrival his senior year either, hes going to have to pass every class to make it.

Most of the other kids I know that drop out are because of drugs. Now that I think of it, every single one of them are heavily involved with pot.

And thanks for the input... it is a sign of some intelligence in the forum...  it sounds like an herbal issue and riot prisoners in dusty dank bedrooms... and lonely lazy dudes...

Try not to get too ignorant folks, several of my friends, formerly bud buddies, are 4. students. I know it doesn't work for everybody but Marijuana is a gateway to open-mindedness. Alcohol is worse.

And of course video games, as well as many other products of capitalism and globalization are the bane of academia.
