Red Team Spawn Point    Center Building Lights    Cap Point Redux

ARENA_DUST

THE LATEST WDFNEWS CUSTOM MAP

created by Endyss

Okay, so I was playing on Tempest #4 when Arena first came out and saw the striking similarities between Arena mode and good ol' Counterstrike.  I had never made a map before, but the thought occurred to me, why not port the most famous CS map over to TF?  The new gameplay possibilities would be awesome!  You could still snipe through the open door to defend bomb target (now cap point), or ambush people in the center building... but now you could stickybomb the door!  Now you could put a sentry in the most central area as well!

Being an entirely ground-based game, Counterstrike never had to worry much about the vertical axis.  Now you can jump onto buildings, even sticky-jump across huge swaths of the map, if that's something you want to spend the health on!  If you do get onto the roof, you'll find that the central building has a few holes in the top to allow light in (and whatever else an enterprising Soldier or Demoman might want to drop).  Adding TF-themed architecture to the map has also created new nooks and crannies to fight from, and the narrow choke points from the original will be perfect for camping pyros.

Overall, building this map has been more work than I could have ever imagined, and so far I think it's looking pretty damn good.  It's almost 100% complete, with a few things needing fixing here and there.  It'll definitely go into #3, the Custom Map server, but I'm hoping with everyone's approval it could also go into regular rotation on Tempest #4 as well.  I think it'll kick some ass, I hope you all do too.

Are going to have this on that server that we have for such maps, Tempest something - I forget.  We have soooo many now.

Let's dance . . .

EDIT: Ya, I didn't read most of that post.  Pretty pics and the words "new map" got my interest, the rest is just blah blah blah.  Now let's do this thing.
You should be more like Cantrip.

Twitchy: "I pulled a Cantrip . . ."
GivePeaceAChance: "If the Tempest had nipples, I'd pinch that shit."
Xylicon: "I'm about to deliver my [Richard] in your face for posting that stupid shit. "
WDF?: "He keeps reaming me... night after night... I'm rather sore."
GivePeaceAChance: "OMG MY NIPS ARE HARD"
llenta: "cantrip, you fail!!!"
Filliam H. Muffman: "i'm on top of dick"

When can we expect an ETA on a beta version to test it out?

As the guinea pig during early betas - and the general annoying guy who constantly finds bugs to fix - I can attest to the multitude of ways this map can now be played. With the ability to go on roofs there's a remarkable amount of playable space and it could well provide longer views than any other TF2 map - for better or worse; we'll have to see if it has any performance/lag consequences. Personally I can't wait to play it with large teams battling it out. You can only tell so much from whacking endyss with the shovel for the umpteenth time.

Now if only I had the time to adopt the Dust general layout into a CP or PL map...

Prior to putting this up on a server and/or if you plan to post it to any website for other users to DL.....I would recommend if you haven't done so to try and contact the orig. maker of Dust.  Seen alot of people make awesome ports only to have them shut down because they never asked permission to do so.

Just a C.Y.A if anything else

Looks very nice so far, my only gripe is that I don't see any architecture from the blue team. It may just be the screenshots, but if there isn't already some in there, you probably want to throw some in around the "terrorist" spawn. A TF2 map without a red vs blue theme would feel awkward.

Gonna have to go on tempest 4, not 3. Arena to normal screws servers up.

There are various "Blu" things around the "terrorist" spawn. Towards the middle of the map you'll find sort of an intermingling of the two.

As for asking permission, aside from only a couple models and textures, the only thing it has in common with Dust is the general layout. Do you really have to ask permission for something as generic as layout?

I've seen a lot of re-makes of Unreal Tournament maps where the map makers only shared layouts in common. Usually they don't ask permission, but they do give credit to the original map maker.

Well he did technically import the dust.bsp or whatever they are calling them nowadays (havent mapped in years).  But i think with teh significant changes that had to be made, it would be okay.....though you might name it somethign like "dusty" so its locktite.   Endyss is a lawyer...surely he knows how far he can take something copyright wise.

Just a suggestion in case Endyss was really proud and wanted to extend his map past just the Tempest servers (e.g. posting on the Steam forums/etc).  And yea since the layout of the map is more than half of what goes into a map I'd say it be best to ask permission or like Mario says give credit.

Edit:  Looking forward to playing it, Dust was fun when you weren't getting sniped 2 sec off the bat by someone w/ the AWP through the double doors

Just thought of this also.  In terms of map making (since I haven't done it since the very first CS) can you switch the intel spawns seperate from the drop off points?  e.g. Kinda create an opposite cap the flag map?  Reds intel spawns at blues point and they have to carry it to the opp end of map to drop off?  That might be an interesting twist <shrug>

From what I've read, you can.
It's apparently been avoided due to the confusion it could potentially cause.

I did think he could call it "Sand' - but I never suggested it to him. We both thought it had more of a south-western feel now, opposed to the original middle eastern.

Ask and ye shall receive: Blue Spawn!

Btw, Whut, what do you mean it can't go on Tempest #3?  I'd RATHER have it on #4 than #3 so it's not a problem, but do we need to chitchat before I toss it up for "opening night"?

EDIT: After thinking about the amount of blue vs. red I redid that yellow building on the the left in the 2nd shot.  It's cooler (and bluer) now.
