That's the thing. I can only make a crazy monster. You eventually make entire cities (including the architecture of the buildings) and entire planets.

I'm sorry, but that's a pretty dump post, that or one made by somebody that has just not bothered to actually look at the communities creations. You can make nearly ANYTHING you can imagine with the creature creator. I have seen some things that would make you shit a brick they are so great and detailed. Too bad all the interesting ideas are worthless when it comes to gameplay and you just might as well just shit out generic clawmonsters to get anywhere and all the stages are ridiculously shallow and indistinguishable from one another until at least the civilization stage and it's basically a game for children.

I agree, this is one of those titles that is just greater than the sum of it's shallow parts that are all half games in and of themselves all strapped together to make a meta game. I won't be picking it up untill at least a few content patches or the first expansion comes along to address that. Okay, I've played up to the tribal part so far. My main gripe is that there isn't a whole lot of depth per level of the game, which is very disappointing. You pretty much just point and click. Maxis appears to have remedied that by making each level comparatively short, but then that kinda ruins the fun.
My favorite part of the game is the last part of the evolution level, when you actually run around the planet as your creature, competing with other species for the top of the food chain. How you build your creature has a significant impact on their strengths and abilities, which in turn can have a bit of an impact on combat. I never could figure out how to take out the "epic" monsters, though, and there is a lot left to be desired for the complexity of the fighting system. Still, it was a lot of fun creating a dragon creature and flying away whenever I was in trouble, and I was sad to see it end so quickly. I actually ended up running around the world for a couple more hours before starting up the tribal level, trying to collect all the customization parts. As it turns out, whenever your creature advances to another level, the game will auto-save your creature progress in the Sporepedia, so you can even start a new tribal campaign on a completely different planet.
That being said, the tribal level of the game completely ignores your creature's stats, so you don't have to feel bad about your creature being a wussy herbivore. But this also pissed me off, because that meant I didn't need to waste three hours collecting all the customization parts to make my creature look cool for the tribal phase, as they are all unlocked for the creature creator outside of the game. You can just simply play the evolution level until you reach the tribal level, quit out of your game, create whatever you like in the creature creator, and then start a new tribal campaign.
As I progress through the game I don't think I'm going to like it as much. It's a cool concept being able to create buildings, vehicles, etc, but really the best part of the game was the creature creation. If Maxis had dropped the RTS portions of the game and focused purely on the evolution game, this game would have been phenomenal. But like The Spaniard says, instead it's just spread too thin between its different levels.

The game wasn't intended to be challenging, It's supposed to be a sandbox/god game. If you spent hours designing your creatures and buildings and vehicles only to find that they were unfit for survival and made extinct, you'd be pretty pissed off.

Well I must say, I was going to make a post on Whether I should buy spore or buy The Force unleashed on the 16th and now I am not going to waste my money on spore anymore.

If it wasn't intended to be challenging, they wouldn't allow you to select different difficulty levels upon starting a game. Garry's Mod gives you more sandbox options than Spore, and the god game doesn't start until you achieve space travel. You do end up dying a lot in Spore, regardless of whether you're well-equipped for survival. There's always a rival creature/tribe/city who is also well-equipped for your destruction, because the game is designed so the enemies will evolve with you, and sometimes victory is achieved through pure luck (or game glitches, like when the enemy gets stuck on buildings). On top of that, the saving system in Spore is borked, so if you die in a level you go back to the last time you MANUALLY saved. There are no autosaves, aside from the game saving changes to your creature/building/vehicle in the Sporepedia. I guess Maxis assumed you would progress through the levels fast enough to where you wouldn't need to save in between, and for the most part they were right. Even with the frequent deaths, you still run though the game rather quickly, and could probably get to the space age in about a day's worth of playing.

That is a no brainer. If you can only get one, USE THE FORCE! How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Difficulty levels don't really make the game challenging. Have you ever played level 10 bots on CS 1.6? Playing the hardest difficulty on most RTS games is a piece of piss compared to playing pro players.
Everyone wants to play Spore for the Space stage. Wouldn't you prefer to be rushed through the beginning stages?

It doesn't matter how dumb the CPU players are, the game gives them the advantage every time. They get instant upgrades to their technology, whereas you spend time working for it. Speak for yourself when you say that everyone wants to play a certain stage. Honestly I had the most fun with the creature evolution stage. Buildings, tanks, boats, planes, and spacecraft don't have near as much customization options as the creatures, and the choices you make are mostly cosmetic. For instance, having more guns on your tank will improve its firepower, but the size and shape of the guns have no effect. The shape of your creature's feet will determine how fast they run, how high they jump, and even how well they can dance. All of those little quirks are pointless once you get to the later stages.

Maybe I just have a god complex and want to terraform, colonize, and obliterate planets more than fart around with how cute my creature looks.
By the way, I got the game this morning. I won't pass judgement until I've played everything, but I gotta say I'm already glad I'm not a star wars fanboy or a mindless consumer and went with Force Unleashed.

Ouch, now I feel like a furry. Actually, my favorite creature I've created so far is a bloodthirsty bipedal bullfrog, sporting four evil yellow eyes, a giant toothy mouth, scaly skin painted like poison dart frogs, poison glands on the shoulders, a pair of dragon wings, and an extra set of arms tipped with blades. Who needs to befriend other species when you can just eat them? I can't play Force Unleashed anyway, because someone forgot to make a PC version.

I got Spore. I will be getting Force Unleashed for PS3. If it is half as fun as the demo, I will come out ahead. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
