Bush & Co. soon to announce over $1 billion in aid to Georgia. I want to see how many of you, if we put it to a vote, would be for or against this. Please keep in mind a few things:

1) Any money the Gov't spends is backed by taxpayers promises to pay. You can safely consider this as an obligation.
2) These deals can be called foreign aid, federal aid, or humanitarian aid. It makes zero difference what the name is.
3) These deals are usually brokered between governments. This means that the gov't will be the first to get their hands on the money.

So vote and tell us, are you for or against this obligation? It is too bad that we do not have this luxury in the real world.
You wanna take this to Fuck Town?
Oh gadzooks, yes!

I voted yes because for the government a one off payment of 1 billion is like giving pocket change to a beggar.  Personally I'd like to see it earmarked explicitly for humanitarian-only projects. I bet instead it will go to weapons, probably weapons bought from the US because that's how most "foreign aid" tends to work.

If we profess ourselves to be an ally of the Georgian government, it would only make sense to support them in any way we can.

Ditto.
Plus if it's used for purposes other than humanitarian aid it will alienate the Russians that much more.

I voted no. I have no issue with any of the actions Russia took. I also have no issue with Russia continuing the re-growth of their country, economically, militarilly, and geographically.

I understand most in washington still fear the cold war and feel they are playing a part in it. I think that's BS and we need to move on. Georgia, like Israel, can either survive or die on its own, or in some form pay US to help THEM.

I voted no because whatever you want to call $1 billion, it is money collected from We The People and shouldn't be used to play policeman or aid worker around the world.

I mean, is it really charitable to give away someone else's money?  I'd be all in support of individuals donating $1 billion+ of their own money to the Red Cross or other private organizations that would provide relief to Georgia, but this kind of government-administered "humanitarian aid" is wasteful, not the job of our government, and a deprivation of my property rights as a tax payer.

You don't have a problem with blatant imperialism?

If I had money to give, I would give it to Georgia, among other places. But I don't support giving away stolen money.

I voted no. Not because I support Russia's actions, but because I don't see Europe's contribution mentioned anywhere.  The action to invade Georgia has everything to do with controlling oil to Europe. Since they have the most to lose, they need to step up with the lions share of the cash.

Once we hand money over to a foreign government, it doesn't matter what our earmarks are -- They're going to spend it as they damned well please.

I voted no. We have to learn to stay the fuck out of other people's business. Georgia was a part of the USSR, and they're simply fighting for their independence. I don't remember anyone fighting for ours back in 1776.

You think Georgia is a separate race? No. They aren't Georgians. They're Russians. They might live in a place not fully recognized as a country called Georgia, and so can be called Georgians by that way, but it isn't like their bloodlone changed any.

Kind of like our civil war.

I don't remember anyone helping us during our civil war Everyone stayed out. We aren't the world police.

Seriously? The French helping America in its revolution does not justify giving aid to nations who we think deserve it, that's complete bullshit. Please prove me wrong.

They helped out the South by trading with them.  It took the navy from the North to blockade the Confederate territories to keep France and Britain(in particular) from aiding the Confederate forces with supplies.

So in a way, yes they helped, just not the side of the victor.
