So they're firing the LHC on Thursday. All the talk is about black holes and Hawking radiation and whatnot. Common sense says that if a black hole is formed (traditionally by compressing mass) that it's initial size will only be worth a few atoms in diameter. Now, hypothetically nobody would be harmed on initial forming of the black hole.

I'm just curious now, but what would happen if said hypercompressed mass was located directly above a person. Do you believe that a completely clean, through-and-through hole in a vital organ measuring a few atoms across would kill a human being? Like say you have a hole 3 atoms across going completely through your brain stem. Would you be paralyzed? Instantly killed? Or unharmed? I'm completely stumped at how much clean damage a person could sustain before injury or death.

lol! atoms are small!  Think of how many countless atoms are involved in just one nerve.

That's the point of discussion. The layman's analogy is having a heart pierced from the front and clean through the back by an atomic-sized bullet. Would it do damage?

If It does actually go through you AND hit something, There are several things that can go on but I will name off a few but in order to cause real damage those atoms would have to hit a nucleous. It would kill the cell, or mutate it by shoving an RNA Molecule that could turn it into CANCER, but like your just assume the LHC fires only 3, look what happens when someone is hit with gamma radiation, and I am not talking about the hulk.

I dont care if we all die from the LHC causing a black hole that will grow and rip us to shreds, because I have a really good friend that's over there right now with UCI and he'll die first, so at least I won't die in vain.

Then we can all LAN in hell.

I don't think anyone actually realizes that it's not recreating the Big-Bang, it's recreating the conditions just after the Big-Bang.

Great point, SirLordPoop. You were obviously making reference to the unusual substances that first began to form after the big bang, which would eventually become planets and stars surrounding the base, or center, of the universe. Planets surrounding suns, galaxies surrounding other galaxies... events of that sort.

Science isn't sure if this is normal, of course, and that's why they're firing the LHC.

Also remember that they're only circulating the beams next week, and that the first particle collisions don't start until October 21.

It takes a fuckton of trials to get everything working properly. It's 17 miles in circumference, I wouldn't be surprised if it took days just getting all the magnets and detectors powered and lined up properly.
