In three years, US arms sales have tripled.

From the NYTimes:
Quote:

WASHINGTON — The Bush administration is pushing through a broad array of foreign weapons deals as it seeks to rearm Iraq and Afghanistan, contain North Korea and Iran, and solidify ties with onetime Russian allies.

From tanks, helicopters and fighter jets to missiles, remotely piloted aircraft and even warships, the Department of Defense has agreed so far this fiscal year to sell or transfer more than $32 billion in weapons and other military equipment to foreign governments, compared with $12 billion in 2005...[Read Full Article]

Which leads me to these questions:

What exactly does our country produce anymore?

Are we reliant on war to drive the economy and if we are, should that worry us as citizens?

Every major power supplies weapons to the world.  I bet US and Russia are leading the pack, but China, france, the EU in general...all sell guns.  It sucks, but really...people are always going to be fighting people.  We have 10000 years history to prove that.  Its not like that would change if the US suddenly decided we wouldn't sell surplus or obsolete arms.

The last I saw the US leads the pack by a very significant margin, I think it was about 60% of the market and growing. Followed by Russia with around 10%, France around 3%, and the rest made up of misc. countries mostly in the EU.
