Okay, so we all know that Washington state was the first state to outlaw text messaging while driving, for obvious reasons, and other states are quickly following suit.

Well, there was a train wreck on Friday, with the suspected cause being that the engineer was texting while in control of the train.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26727674/?gt1=43001
25 people dead, 138 people injured.

What interests me more is the poll that MSN conducted to follow up with the article.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26736977/?gt1=43001
33% of the people said they often text while driving, while only 23% said that they avoid multitasking while texting. 6.8% also said they text while having sex.

Banning texting while operating a vehicle; has it helped at all discourage people from being stupid?
Honestly I think that with a job like a train engineer, you should be fired for even turning on your cell phone unless in case of an emergency.

Ban it all you want if you like, it'll be only slightly less effective with the general public than the war on drugs.

Texting while doing most things is stupid. Since man roamed the earth 4,000 years ago with the dinosaurs (it's a joke, son) we have been fine without text messaging. I think we will be fine without it during driving, performing brain surgery, sex, etc.

I'm quite content with the war on drugs, for your information. My roommate at UW got busted for selling marijuana after he'd been dealing for less than two weeks. I'd say the police force in Seattle is quite effective.

The problem is that they made it a secondary offense. I see fuckers on cell phones all the time still, I nearly got rear-ended by one just the other week. The cunt honked at me too, even though I had my turn signal on before I slowed down to make a turn. Anyways, it's pretty obvious when someone is fucking with their phone while driving. You'll never eliminate it from happening, but at least you can reduce the frequency somewhat and turn it into a social taboo.

"No doing X while driving" is one of those "scary laws". It punishes everyone because of those that do something irresponsibly. Do I talk on the phone while driving? If someone calls me, probably briefly. But I won't talk for long in traffic and I get off the phone if I'm about to go on a freeway. I was on a road by myself Sunday night, going to pick my wife up from church, and I called her quickly to tell her I was almost there. Should I be arrested?

Blanket laws are horrible horrible things. The freedom of many shouldn't be compromised because of the actions of a few. That holds true in all levels of law. But then the problem becomes one of police officer judgement. If they can't pull everyone over that they see on the phone while driving, then they need to make the extra effort to decide if they're doing so recklessly.

I was almost killed from that shit one time. The bitch texting on her phone ran a red light also if I remember right. There needs to be an IQ test for operating a vehicle tbh.

It is one of those things where you can add one more charge AFTER the fact, but it really stops nothing.

Agreed. We'll never be able to outlaw every thing that might distract a person while they drive. What we should be doing is testing to see if people are so stupid that they might allow themselves to become too distracted. Plus it'd help gas prices, insurance prices, public transportation income, and support carpooling.

That is win all around.

Banning it won't do anything, but those individuals should be held responsible for their incompetence.
