A few months ago I got my dad to finally start the transition from Clearwire to Qwest. (Anyone planning on getting Clearwire in the near future should check out www.clearwiresucks.com)
After a long while I finally get Qwest up and running and am able to get it to recognize my computer. However, Qwest will not work through a router.
Despite all of Clearwire's many flaws, it definitely has one thing over most ISP's, the ability to be plug-and-play. Routers did not matter to it.

After buying a new router, stupidly thinking that the ancient one we were using was the problem, we realize that it still doesn't work.
My dad's tech savvy friend Brendan came over and had a look at it, quickly determined that Qwest was the problem, and set to work with the Qwest software. Once again, Clearwire was the better in this situation, because it didn't have discs or anything, while Qwest had to run a program.
After long hours of working, not only did we not succeed, but we came out worse off then when we started. Directly hooking up my computer to the Qwest modem via ethernet cable doesn't work. All the lights on the modem are as they should be, but it's just not getting through.
Right now I'm back on a direct line with Clearwire, making itself obvious with its shitty ping.

From what I watched over Brendan's shoulder, it looked like he was configuring the Qwest software as well as the Linksys (brand name of the router) software so that they recognize eachother.

Does anyone here have any knowledge about Qwest and its trouble with routers?

I have Qwest set up in my apt. I'm running it through a Linksys router with no problems.

Re-install the modem and re-run any relevant software. Directly plug the ethernet cable from the modem to your computer. If you cannot connect to the internet that way, you may have a bad modem and it can be replaced by contacting Qwest.

If you can connect, then run the ethernet cable from the modem to the internet ethernet plug on the router. From there, configure all of your router settings at the default site. I don't recall it off-hand, but a quick googling with the router's model # should turn up your results.

Best of luck!

And yes, Clearwire is the "how do i internet" of all time.

Thanks, I'll try reinstalling all the qwest stuff, then doing what you suggested.

Mmmmm... that's a problem outside the scope of using a router, then.
Did they test the connection when you ordered Qwest? Seems they should have verified it worked on your computer.

And I use to also have Qwest DSL going through a router (with a static IP) back in the day.

Alright, after working at it last night, I came to a conclusion:
Brendan screwed up my modem. It used to work, I used it for a long time directly linking it to my computer, but when we tried configuring it to see the router, it stopped seeing anything.
So it looks like I'll have to get some help just getting it back to where it was in the first place before I make any more progress on this thread...
Anyone who has or have had Qwest in the past willing to say anything about it? Rikaelus, you said you used to use it, what made you switch?

We're too far along to change tracks and get a new ISP, we've already put too much money into Qwest. But it would be nice to know what I might have to deal with in the future.

What model of modem do you have? A lot of the newer modems have firewalls built in already, and that can cause problems when you throw another firewall into the mix. Do you have all the login info that Qwest gave you to authenticate your DSL? If you messed it up pretty bad, but you have all the PPoE login info (usually and email address w password), you can try a factory reset on the modem, and if you know the model number, you can find the proper default IP address to log into the config page. Then you can go from there.

It sounds like you are having a problem with the way the modem talks to the computer/router.
<informal explanation>The modem initially makes contact with a device and latches onto the MAC address.  When you then go and plug the modem into a router the modem freaks out and stops working because it is no longer talking to the same MAC address.  This is why most routers allow you to spoof (aka clone) the MAC address from another device.  Sometimes you will need to power cycle or reset the router until it talks to the computer again.
</informal explanation>

Try getting the modem to work directly with a computer again.  You might need to reset the modem a couple times before it works again.  Also try leaving it unplugged from power for a few minutes or so to allow the modem to resync with the computer.  Then get the router on the network connected to the computer, but not connected to the modem.  You want to go into the router menu and spoof/clone the PC's MAC.  Once the router is configured, switch the cables so the modem goes to the router.  This should fix yer wagon.

Alright, after some Qwest tech support that really only told me that my IP address was wrong or something, I went back to Brendan and over the phone we got the modem to work with my computer again.
Apparently the modem hijacked my IP address and set it to something starting with 169. I recognized that that wasn't it, I remembered mine started with 192, so we ended up doing the power cycle reset thing.
We will attempt to work on getting it to work with the router another time.

For anyone who wants to know:
Qwest Modem: Actiontec M1000
Router: Linksys

The tech support pretty much came out and said that the modem doesn't like working through routers, so we're going to try to find a way to tell the modem to behave.

But I haven't played TF2 in atleast a week, so it's off to The Tempest for me.

P.S: While trying to stupidly do it on my own, I found in the Qwest software I could restore previous configurations of network and modem settings. It didn't work, and sort of did a system restore, so all the hard work I spent in Gears Of War last night finally finishing Act 3 (I think) were lost, and now I'm back at Act 1.
Now I shall retreat to multiplayer games, where save files don't exist.
Also, I plan on looking up a cheat code for Gears of War so I can skip to Act 3.
