I used to think Unions were shit. Whiny useless organizations that were obsolete in this current age. Then I joined the working class. In the line of work I'm in, I now see the benefit of unions. I hope to one day join the stagehands union here locally. Without union standards for workers in my line of work we'd never make enough money to live.

Years ago I belonged to SEIU because the job I had was a "closed-shop" job and I had to join in order to work there. I hated the union. They took something like $62 out of my paycheck every pay period. And they did nothing for me for the four years that I worked there, years ago. All the local chapter's president cared about was putting his damn Wolfman Jack face in the newsletter and the local newspaper. His ass was under investigation a few years ago. Useless. Now I'm at a job which is also a closed-shop. You have to belong to the union, but the union turns out to be the United Auto Workers Union by a fluke of history which I'm not sure I fully understand, but when I heard who they were I said out loud, "really?" Now, I chose the organization I work for because they let me have a life. It's probably the lowest pay I could have taken given my profession, but I get to have a life. Now, in the next few months, they will go into negotiations for a new contract for us. I'm excited as hell for them to go to bat for me after receiving my first paycheck. : ( (Whut, I'm sending the dough I can spare tomorrow. Love you honey.) Anyway, I'm supposed to log in a certain number of hours each day for my salary. But if I go over, they don't pay me more, they just give the time back to me as comp time. -The more you work your ass off at the office, the more they want you away from it so you don't burn out. So, my tune has changed. I'm with Whut, I say unions are useful. I'm hoping for a raise sometime soon where i would otherwise see none. And they negotiated way more paid holidays than are observed. So yeah, go unions. You should be more like Cantrip. Twitchy: "I pulled a Cantrip . . ." Really depends... They have their purpose, but there's nothing like crippling the ability for US companies to compete in the world market. Has the UAW taken any concessions to help keep the auto industry running or are they just content to let it be driven into the ground?

And even though the UAW represents me, our organization has nothing to do with anything remotely akin to labor, or labour for you Brits. I'm still scratching my head about that one. I'm not saying what I do for a living, but it would be like having Jimmy Hoffa represent say, the local library librarians. Yeah, it's that far off and freaky. You should be more like Cantrip. Has the UAW taken any concessions to help keep the auto industry running or are they just content to let it be driven into the ground? For the most part, you're right. Except that the unions had their purpose. The unions had their time when the workplace was unsafe filled with men and children being paid dismal salaries. That's gone. We have extensive labor laws now which protect workers, and employers run a much better environment than they did decades ago. Perhaps they're still relevant for stagehands, but on the whole, unions are bunk and need to be broken. Honestly, I see unions as a virus slowly sucking the life out of American industry. American cars are now being built in Mexico to avoid the high cost of doing business domestically while non-unionized workers working at foreign-owned factories in the US are being paid well and have stable jobs. They (unionized labor) must be stopped. If not what's happening in Michigan (unemployment, loss of jobs to overseas competitors, crumbling real estate market, crime, population decline, etc.) will spread to other states like...a virus. And don't think it stops with cars; in Pittsburgh, the steelworkers union killed almost all the steel manufacturing here. The airport union killed the airport (PIT used to have 400+ flights a day, now only 70). They kill local governments too. The bus drivers union here is driving the city bankrupt with BUS drivers making 100k+. get your ass to mars

I get a good laugh when there's any kind of sports strike. Nothing like overpaid baseball players going on strike.

I think people should be free to organize as they see fit, but business owners should be free to dismiss them if they choose. Unions reduce productivity and damage the competitiveness of a business, but the whole idea of organized labor is allowing the two groups to work things out. Too much top-down protection for either side means one can take advantage of the other, but business owners should be able to hire (and fire) as they see fit.
If you support union labor, rather than support preventing business' ability to eliminate it in their organization, you should patronize pro-union companies with your business. If you're pro-union and do otherwise, you're recognizing in the only way that matters to businesses that the non-union companies' products are in some way superior. And ultimately what does THAT say about the end run effect of labor unions? HolyJaw wrote:In the end, everything Endyss said.

Yes, the UAW has conceded a lot of ground, meanwhile executive compensation keeps on going up. Pretty much every union in the US has spent the past few decades conceding shit that took decades to win, all while worker efficiency and corporate profits have skyrocketed. Since when are worker efficiency and corporate profits bad things? Profits are driven far more by quantity of sales than minor gains and losses in profit margin, so it sounds like productivity and units sold are both up. Not making judgments on unions themselves or their gains or concessions, but just going by the trend you stated, that would seem to indicate that union interests run counter to the long term success of a business. Unionization in the developed countries alone in a global market are of limited use. As globalization grows, the jobs are just moved to non-union parts of the world. Unions need to be global now to protect all workers. Unionization in Central America is just starting now and is being resisted with murder and corporate terrorism (see Columbia). There is a long fight ahead to ensure fair, safe workplaces where workers can make a living wage everywhere on the planet. My grandfather was in the trenches for the unionization of the steel industry in the US and his spirit is with the organizers now fighting (often for their lives) in developing countries throughout the world. Solidarity forever! "I love the smell of napalm in the morning. Smells like ... victory"

The point is they are working harder, the business is making more money, but they still concede shit. Then when times are bad they concede more shit because for some reason no one ever thinks to start cutting at the top of the hierarchy first. Executive compensation has skyrocketed over the past few decades, it used to be something like 10-times the average wage. It's now 250-something times the average wage. Companies make money because workers do stuff, per hour worked they are doing more stuff than ever before and getting paid less for it. I know I bring this point up all the time but I think it bares repeating and illustrates what a failure the American economic system has been for the past several decades. Re: Union interests running counter to long-term success of a business. I think a much more compelling argument can be made that it is actually the top management whose interests are more likely to run counter to the long-term interests of a business (or at least be overly focused on short-term interests to the detriment of long-term interests) and that it's unionized workers who are most likely to give a shit that their employer sticks around for a few decades.
