it's ok. all computer components have clearly dotted lines along which you can cut* to make smaller.

Looked like a lot more than 1500 to me.  Pretty cool.

Poor woman has to probably clean all that up too.

And why did they have some random empty room?

Yes, because instead of selling those 1500 hard drives on eBay, it's so much more sensible to set them up like dominoes.

You should put a book down on the center of the floor and if anyone asks you why it's there, make something silly or spooky up about it.

Nice house. Modding XBox's must be pretty lucrative.

Maybe if you sell gold-plated cases.
You can get your hands on 1500 hard drives by simply ripping the hard drives out of 1500 Xbox's (with or without the intention of putting in a new hard drive), and nice houses aren't always expensive if you know where to look.

But really the Xbox modding market isn't any larger than the PC modding market, which is to say that you have to run a pretty big operation to see any real profit. 5 years of Xbox modding with 1500 spare hard drives means they had to mod at least 300 Xbox's per year. Any significant modification like installing third-party hardware, lighting effects, and mod chips will take about a day for one person to complete, and 3-14 days for a new housing/paintjob.
