So I'm living on campus at Evergreen State College.

That being said, I'm on the school's internet connection. It's not slow, per say. They just block..... Everything fun. This seems to include Steam

I've tried reinstalling and shit, but Everytime Steam tries to update its platform, it fails miserably. Put simply, if I left it updating for a month, it might get done.

Anyone know how I can get around this, or should I just go stab everyone in the tech department here?

The most simple and obvious way too bypass this is to use a proxy, but it depends on what blocking software your College uses, unlike last year, this year my College is using a technology called "TruView" which automatically blocks a website before it is even viewed.

The only other option (which im considering myself) is to get "Mobile Broadband". That one is £20 a Month (and comes with Free Home Broadband for a year). It is Plug & Play incase your College (like mine this year) have programmed the Anti-Virus software to delete spacific .exe files ("Safe Mode" disables this) or have programmed their computers to wipe all changes at reboot.

I was thinking about using a proxy, even though it would slow my connection down.

The question is, how?

Well, to view a blocked website on an internet browser is easy, just use a proxy website and enter the URL of the website you want to visit. A lot of proxy websites will also be/get blocked, but there are new ones every day. There are website with lists of thousands of Proxy websites on, or dynamic ones where the URL changes daily. You can get new ones emailed to you daily. Unless like I said earleir your College uses "TruView" or something similar which blocks websites automatically before it is even viewed.

To use a proxy for an application or for all internet access from your computer beacomes more difficult. Some apps like Steam might not work with a proxy, it might need a direct connection with their servers so its "Secure". Some programs are designed to let you enter a proxy in the Options and you can enter a proxy address in your internet connection options somewhere but im not sure how it works, I will have too look into it. This might not work also if your College like mine, block all applications (except internet explorer) from accessing the internet by blocking ports.

Be carefull assing around with your Colleges network, its probally written in the "Terms of Use" not too use proxys etc, and if they find out they might block your internet access completely like they did too me! (Yeah im Cool!)

Just go to your University tech desk and ask for a port request form.
If they don't know what you're talking about ask to speak with an admin or tech.
Request to have the following ports open.
TCP Ports 27020-27050  UDP Ports 1200,27000-27015

Who'du thunk it could be so simple?

Wait, evergreen filters your internet connection? That's fucking retarded. I thought Evergreen was supposed to be a huge center of liberalism. Granted liberalism today includes political correctness and censorship and all that bullshit, still, I thought they'd be above crap like that.

I was surprised too. Youtube / streaming video in general is totally blocked.

Hardcore.

Sounds like a smaller university....probably doesn't like thier students eating up bandwith.  I went to a div 1 school and they let us do whatever the hell we wanted....this was even back before napster was neutered by the record labels.  I think one guy on my floor got his apartment raided by campus police for running a warez/mp3 server...but he was using like hundreds of gigs of transfer each day.
