I agree that L4D will revive things a bit, but we ought to look into expanding current multiplayer options already out there.  Some ideas might be:
  • WoW/MMO Forum - I know we have the MMO Forum embedded in the Game Slop section, but the Frozen Penguin Breeding Grounds seems more geared towards discussion than community organization.  If there was enough interest we could organize in an MMO (I've been playing WoW again lately so I'll use it as an example), form a pDs guild on a single server, and try to make it a larger part of the site.  It might entail renaming the "WDFNews.com Gaming Servers" to "WDFNews.com Gaming Community" or something, but make it a prominent place geared around people actually playing the game together.  I have no idea what the site redesign could enable us to do, but it'd be cool to be able to include information on one's character in their profile, links to the character at WoWArmory.com, etc.  It would take the interest of more than 2-3 people in the community, but with 10 or so we could have a real presence in something like WoW, able to run instances and recruit more people into the community as a whole.

  • Console Forums - [Copy/Paste my remarks on Game Slop and the "WDFNews.com Gaming Community"].  We could add a Console Community section to the main forum site, with subforums for PS3/Xbox360/Wii.  In addition to getting people with similar console interests into one place, we could also maintain a list of people's GamerTags and Friend Codes in each subforum.  Appoint a moderator or two to keep things organized, and have a locked Sticky thread instructing people to PM the moderator with their ID if they want theirs included.  With things like Rock Band 2 and the ability to start online bands, people might get more into it if they could find other people from the site more easily.

The problem with WoW, and many MMO's, is that there are factions, different kinds of servers, etc., that can dictate the style of gameplay. It might be tough to get a lot of interest not only in a single MMO, but in a single style of playing it. If we did go WoW then I might transfer my Orc hunter to whatever server we decide on because I play her more loosely, but in general I'm an RPer so you won't likely get my main characters. But considering she's an orc, the guild would also need to be Horde.

lol, my current main character is Horde on a RP-PVP server.  I'm not an RPer in the sense of burying myself in the canon and "lore" of the game, but I definitely like to play "as" my character and not just treating it like a vehicle to level up and grind for gold.

Eh, the truest definition of role-playing is.. well.. playing a "role"; or playing "as" your character. It might help to know a level of lore in order to establish your character and have it interact with the world in a way that makes sense to that world, but you definitely don't need to be a storyteller-type to be an RPer. In fact.. I've often found storytellers to be pretty poor RPers. They may enable other RPers by providing a bit of lore, but they just as often god-mod or commit other such fourth-wall infractions.

My "flagship" character is part of a PvP-RP defense organization that was founded before there even were PvP-RP servers. I had hoped the organization would move to one once they were deployed but, alas, they opted to keep it on our RP server where its roots were.

Well, regardless of your interest in consolidating that particular character, if you and I are the only people here really interested in a WDFNews branch in WoW (Pandaren Doom Squad, anyone? ), it won't really be worth it.

I haven't been on much (which is probably a good thing for many) because I've been in constant school-mode and with an internship eating the rest of my free time, I just haven't home, let alone on TF2 :/... with luck things will pick up in a month or so. :D

On the other hand, feel free to stop by Alliance-side Feathermoon. I'm guildmaster of a guild with no members (by choice, mind you), but am certainly open to having friends join. You just have to be semi-goodly as it is a Light-themed RP guild.
Besides.. I have more guild bank space than I know what to do with...

I got in to MMO to see everything, not to prance about pretending to be a paladin.  I never understood that.  I would wager that a majority of the folks playing WoW never see the really interesting parts of the game, ie, the endgame and 40 man instances.
How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

If we ever did get a WDFNews WoW thing going, it would have to be friendly to people that want to do some level of RP as well as people who have no time for such things.  For me, I don't see that as so great a divide that it couldn't happen, it's just a question of if Rik and I are the only ones interested in doing it (which so far, it seems we are).

I'd get back into EVE if more people from here started getting into it, too.

Actually, how many people are still playing it? Is that corp still alive? Because I remember there were a few non-pdsers in there.

we tried to start up the EVE thing again a few months ago...but it didnt take. it was just me and Murdy, with Rik and Whut occasionally showing up. people played teh trial and then we never heard back...

also at this point im pretty much done with EVE. it was fun for a while, but it wasnt too good at replacing my twitch reflexes form other MMOs. If we could get a guild up and running, thatd be awesome, but i really dont think we have many people interested in paying a monthly fee to get their game on.
