GLHF though, already looks like it's going places. This is an important quote. Anyone know of an easy way to make said volcano? Don't get me wrong, I'd help you with anything else, but I hate dirt and manual labor. Incidentally I will be helping my dad jackhammer out an old concrete staircase (he's paying me though, and he's injured)

Giller, good idea although plaster of paris is not water proof. the volcano would need to be repainted often... not something I would want to do. Some one mentioned using foam, This is a great idea! light, Waterproof, carveable. You just have to be careful on the type of paint you use or you'll dissolve your volcano away.

I guess a better substitute might be the styrofoam form, with a Urethane plastic resin brushed or poured over the top...then painted. You can get that stuff easily too.. Quote:

So I've been discussing options with my "boss." He sent me this email: PapaOohMau wrote: Just had a bad-ass idea for the lava effect on the volcano. Fiber optics. Could probably come up with something pretty cheap. Also, just spit-balling, what if the volcano was more of an artistic interpretation of a volcano? Kind of like your girlfriends glass friend. Could go nuts with lighting/efx. And if you're very clever, you could come up with another beneficial use for it, like a hooka. That would give you a reason to sit around it for awhile and marvel at it's wonders.
I've got some crazy ideas for a Nye Labs thing.....

So this might be turning into a more complex project now. I'm excited! Lead, you any good at art?

So other than working with glass, anyone have any ideas for an abstract art piece volcano interpretation? My girlfriend's glass thing my "boss" is referring to is attached. While I don't condone that behavior, the artistic design is unquestionably awesome. So, something abstract for a water feature. I think I may have a solution to your volcano idea. How about finding river rock (or lava rock?) and using a foam like this stuff to adhere them together on top of some kind of plastic sheeting? If you were to build a sort of mold out of cardboard boxes for support, and then newspapers for some kind of fill, you could lay thick plastic (maybe scrap pond liner, or something clear plastic?) and then adhere rocks into a mosaic of sorts, leaving holes where you could run your optical fiber ideas through, maybe with some scraps of translucent toys found at a yard sale or thrifty? EDIT: You could just but a red lamp under it if you used clear plastic, and then the light would shine from in between stones!

Thanks for the feedback! I posted more pictures of the yard in the other thread. My latest concern is how to do the exploding part of the volcano. The idea that I've been tossing around is putting a compressor in the garage under sound blankets, then running the air hose underground to the volcano. Have the pump fill a reservoir and randomly have it explode. Need to figure out the triggering system though.

You could line the volcano with little tiki style huts. Quote:Razor: As hard as one might try no one will ever be able to pull one over on Super Penguin. Backpack of Win
