Well fuck, I pre-ordered pro a couple months ago from newegg for 50%, but it was still $100. I wonder if I can cancel that?
EDIT: It was canceled, the money returned and invested in the same OS and Office 2007 ultimate with money to spare.

pre-ordered. as far as i can tell, this is just an update, which means you'll need an OS installed already, right?

If i have 32 bit windows XP installed and try to upgrade to 64 bit Windows 7, am i gonna have problems?

You can't upgrade 32-64 or 64-32; you need to do a clean installation. However, in order to do a clean install you need to pay the extra $13 to get a hard copy of the disc so that you can put it in your drive and boot from it on startup. Since you have a Windows license for XP already then you're good to go as long as you do that. I would cancel that order you made and re-order it with the $13 disc option. When you actually install you need to backup your files, etc., since you're installing from scratch.

Just an FYI for anyone - The W7 Pro edition contains the XP Compatability Mode and Home Premium does not. Honestly I'd always just opt for the higher feature version and just uninstall components not used. Apparently the XP mode is a pretty nice feature.

Is there a way for you to contact them? I'm sure they could add the disc option and charge you the extra. It's not really returning or refunding anything if you do that.

You don't HAVE to buy the disc...even if he's doing a clean install....the direct download is an ISO, he can just use a burning software (ala Nero) and burn the ISO to create a disk. I went ahead and just ordered the disk to save myself some trouble in the future but you don't HAVE to

I just paid for my first Microsoft product since Win98 came out. WTF?

I've got win7 RC2 running on my second box, $30 for a legit license is actually a pretty fair price I think.

I'm not sure how MS handles their whole "upgrade" version thing, I recall in the past upgrade installs just needed to see a copy of an old OS installed or on install media. I know with Win98 at least I had some old Win95 disk I kept around for just that purpose. XP I don't think I've ever seen an upgrade version. Vista, at least the copies I've dealt with, are actually a unified installer containing the maximum possible (i.e. Vista Ultimate Extreme Collectors Platinum Edition Directors Cut). There's a flag that gets set somewhere or the other that tells it what version to behave as when installing, anyone who has played around with BDD/MDT probably knows what I'm talking about, it's been awhile for me though.
Anyways, since Win7 continues the whole WIM thing I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same deal as with Vista.

The short version:

Don't worry about buying an upgrade version, one way or another you'll be able to make it work.

Yeah. I've been able to install a clean version of Vista Ultimate using an upgrade only disc with no other OS installed (this computer to be specific when I bought it), but then I installed W7 RC over it. I do have a student version of the Vista disc I mentioned and although it says "for upgrade use only" it may be a full retail copy that just has restricted use.

Apparently there is a way to bypass the restriction of the upgrade only. When you do a clean install of Windows 7, it will prompt you to insert a previous version of Windows to prove that you actually owned another retail copy, and if you don't do it, it WILL still continue to install. However, once it installed you'll be forced to activate the key. Instead of activating the key (which is an upgrade version key), insert the upgrade disc and do the upgrade only feature - which is essentially installing Windows 7 over Windows 7 again, but when you activate it after that you can use the upgrade key because you'll have just "upgraded" Windows.

I'm not sure how legitimate this method is, but I've heard from a few people it's worked with other versions of Windows and will in W7.
