Ideally I'd like a deep survival game with all the creative outlet that minecraft had before. That way (unless you're a cheater) you know people are really good at the game when they have towering skyscrapers in their server. You know? I was always really proud of mega-projects on the server I played on because we always had 1-7 people working on it, and we all harvested materials for it. So while some people were building, we had a team of people out exploring for the really valuable stuff too. I really liked that cooperative building spirit.
I don't have any problem with them taking the game into a deeper RPG atmosphere, but... I wish they didn't do it at the cost of what the game has been for so long. Even if it's still in "beta"--and I'd argue they're treating it more like alpha--a great number of people have bought the game with the mechanics that existed for almost 10 months, and many of those enjoy the game the way it was. If Notch wants to evolve the game towards an RPG, it would have been nice for it to either go into a new Adventure Mode, be toggleable options, or a post-release, optional expansion.
Based on how I enjoy the game, key mechanics have been on the decline for a few versions--starting with the utter fubar'ing of the old passive mob spawning code. There have been a few nice additions, too--blocks, pistons--but those just aren't enough to counter the negatives for me. =/
