So I went for it, got the Gigabyte P961-S3 or whatever it is, BE-2400 AthlonX2 (the new 45w core from their 65nm fabs), 2gigs of G.Skill PC6400 (newegg had it $40 off). I also got a WD 160gb drive, it looked like the best performer of the sub $50 drives. I'm really hoping my video card is not dead, otherwise I'll be using the crappy on-board video for awhile. Grand total cost was right under $300. I could of spent the same and got better RAM, mobo, or CPU but I figured that what I got is good enough and the added HDD will save my ass if my current drive is dead or at least boost performance a bit over my ancient IDE drive. If my video card is dead it looks like the new 8800GT coming out has pushed prices down for 8600GTs so I think I can get one of those for $80 or so if I need to, maybe even cheaper. Overall I think my new system should turn out to be either about the same performance as my old OC'd Opteron or possibly a bit faster (maybe a good 10%). Or maybe as much as 25% faster if I wind up needing a new vid card. Down the road I can throw in a quad cored Phenom and upgrade the video card and get a few more years of useability out of it, in the meantime this should be good enough for at least another year or two. WTF kind of mobo is that, typically when a manufacture puts the letter "P" in its name tag, it runs an Intel, not an AMD. So could you please clarify that a bit because I'm wiggin out here over what you're doing to yourself.

Dude I've been building my own systems and overclocking for more than a decade. My first computer was a 286. I remember the old days when you had to configure everything with jumpers, hell I remember the first Abit boards that let you OC from within the BIOS back on I think the FX or BX chipset, it was back in the P2 era. I'm not buying an intel motherboard with an AMD cpu :)
here is the board I got: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128034 Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

But why get a mobo with only 1 PCI-E 16x slot on it instead of one with two? Never going to run SLI again. It's just not worth it for me. I used to have one of the fastest gaming machines you could build, back when that extra 10fps made a difference. These days I am happy as long as I can chug along with playable framerates. Graphics are so good now I don't feel bad having to turn the fancy shit off. If my 7600gt can't cut it I'll spend $100 on an 8600gt. When that can't cut it I'll get a 9600gt, or whatever offers the better performance at a sub $150 level. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.
