I sent Steam the following. Notice the very last line where I say I'm not buying the new game because I can't play it:

Still have the same problem.
I don't have Windows Firewall, but I do have Norton Firewall. Had it long before problem started. I deleted all the exceptions and reset them.
As before, I can update the server list okay so it's not a connection problem. I click launch, it changes momentarily to "download paused" then back to 100% and nothing happens.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled 4 times. I have tried your solution too.
Please help. It has been a week since I have not been able to play. And I was going to buy the new HL2 game, but I'm not if I can't play.

Hello,
The problem you are experiencing sounds like it is being caused by a piece of software or hardware on your machine. Please run an msinfo32 report for me so I can assist you, here are instructions:

Make sure your operating system is updated fully before running the report please.

(If you ever have a problem, you should send them a msinfo32 report in your first question to them.)
So before I get to the point where I'm going to send them my computer info, I open Steam. Steam goes into update mode. So I launch DM to see if the problem is still there and guess what? THE DAMN GAME STARTS!
OMFG - The Steam giveth, the Steam taketh away and giveth back.
What did I do to fix the problem? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Take that Sexy.

lol maybe the update actually helped somebody instead of making things worse. although how could they be worse if you can't even play in the first place.

Yeah, now that my game is fixed, I read in the forums other people are having problems after this last update.

And in a cruel turn of events, I'm jumping on a train and heading off to San Diego this afternoon to do the marathon on Sunday. I'm not taking my computer because I don't want to carry it around after the run. So now that it's fixed, I have to be away from it for three days.
To make matters worse, I'm pumping myself with meds to counter the plantar fasciitis I have in my left foot. That's swelling in the arch of the foot and the only cure is to stay off it, take anti-inflams and ice it. I have my foot resting on an ice pack right now.
To top it off, I caught a fraking cold yesterday.

steroids will help your foot, but they will make your cold worse. oh well, good luck on your marathon. as bad as your time is, most people can't do 20 miles, so its still really respectable that you can. maybe one of these days if one is around my area, i will try, i have always wanted to.

Okay, Steam sucks.
I got a Steam update on Thursday night which I think triggered another round of the "downloading paused" problem I was having. I thought it might also have something to do with the installation of Yahoo Instant Messenger, so I uninstalled it. I also am running without xfire at startup. I can play, but all I can't access the Tomb in-game. It will only show me servers with a max of 16 people. I can't add the IP address manually and I can't access it through the in-game internet search. Wiped out my history too. Was down for a day.
I have to access Steam outside the game, look up servers and click on the tomb that way. At least I can play again though.

yea steam sucks
i turned on my computer and all my games became unregistered to my account. It says predownload complete for every game.
