Yea.. I thought you ran allot?

10 marathons (26.2 mile distance) within 12 months from 3/06 to 3/07.  Three weeks later I ran a 5k (3.1 miles) really really fast and as a result I injured my knee at mile 2.5, but I kept running at that fast speed.

So I messed up my knee and I am still feeling the effects almost a year later.  Besides, the amount of time you have to put in practice runs is many many hours.

In the last six months on Saturday long-run training day, I was doing a marathon, then 12 miles the next Saturday, 16, 12, then another marathon.   12 miles at a training pace would take 2.5 hours, plus another hour of prep and cooldown.  That's a lot of time.  16 was over three hours.  And a marathon was all weekend with travel time.

So yeah, I used to run a lot, slowly.  Running fast = injury.  I'm an idiot for not stopping my 5k when I started feeling pain.

My two best friends, who live downstairs, are orthopaedic surgeons.  I asked them about this. They said it probably a small tear of the meniscus.  It is a quick outpatient surgery where they would use a scope and snip off the bad spot.  No more pain after three weeks of heal time.  Jason said it is very rare to tear or sprain a ligament just running.  Now, if you fell in the process due to a pothole or rut in the road that is possible.  Ligaments really do not blow out doing "normal" things like running.  Takes a weird reaction of the body or a massive hit..

Can you ask them wtf is wrong with my knee too? It got hit hard twice, once about 15 years ago when I was conscripted into a theofascists political campaign and the dumbfuck holding a wooden signpost flinched when I hit it with a mallet causing the mallet to go flying right into my knee (I nearly puked and passed out at the same time), and then a second time when I was in a car accident in Canada. I didn't have health insurance (the Canadian paramedics all laughed about this) so I couldn't get it checked out. The car accident time wasn't too bad, it stopped hurting after about a week or two and the mallet time it hurt way more for the first few days but then it went away after about a week. The problem is that now whenever I do a lot of downhill hiking my knee starts to hurt like a motherfucker. I can put weight on it without issue, but if I bend it, especially if I bend it while it is supporting weight, it hurts. It usually is totally fine for about 5 to 10 miles but then the pain starts and gradually gets worse. It reaches a point where it hurts like a bitch but I can keep on hiking without it getting worse, I just hike like a fucking gimp (it keeps the bears away). I'm scared as fuck of going to the doctor and having them tell me I need surgery.

Is it sharp pain or dull pain.  Can you physically pin point the spot???  If it is a general "ache" you could have cartilage problems. If is a sharp.."omg something is stabbing me" it is probably a ligament.  Or, you could have arthritis.. This can develop at any age.

You shouldn't be afraid of surgery.  Most of it is outpatient now using several 1/2 cuts using scopes.  Not much to the knee.  Most common are meniscus tears and the ole MCL/ACL combo.  I played basketball in college a few years ago and had a small tear in my MCL.  I was good to play in four weeks after the surgery.  I'm 26 now and have 0 pain... thanks to the surgery.

It's not quite a stabbing pain and not quite a dull pain but is sort of both. It's probably closer to sharp than dull though, it feels like it's inside and towards the bottom of the knee, maybe on the inside more than outside and more towards the front than the back. I really hope it isn't arthritis, I never even thought of that being a possibility :(
