I posted a whole article about this before, didn't people freaking read it? Maybe it deserves its own thread.

edit: to clarilfy, I am not denying that piracy is wrong. it clearly is. i am not denying it represents a loss to the industries, it clearly does. however, it is almost certainly being overplayed by the industries.

I understand what you are trying to say.  But what doesn't make sense in all that is this:  Why blame piracy for lack of distribution or marketing losses?  why not just tackle those problems on thier own.

and another distinction that has to be made (from my economics background). in a lot of scenarios pirated software does not have any real worth. it cannot absolutely be held as a loss to the industry. why? because person A pirating software from person B does not stop person B using them, whereas if person A stole person Bs TV there is a distrbution of existing wealth (or worth).

- I have an econ degree as well. (god we are nerds).  Anyway I think its easy to overlook the fundamentals here (refer to wealth of nations or the works of Locke)  I can't quote but it goes something like this:  If a person labors to create a usable good, that could not be used in its natural state, are entitled to fair compensations for thier effort.  Additionally, the mental labor or ideas one has to exert also adds additional value...and therefore they should have exclusive rights to the fruits of that mental labor....in this way there should be no distinction between a man who gains wealth off a physical good, and one who labors in ideas.  By claiming that they dont have any real worth you are depriving that individual of his natural rights to fair compensation for his labor.  Additionally, there is no final allocation of wealth with pirated intellectual property!  That is the consumption of the actual innovation by one individual does not affect the consumption possibilities of others, as you stated above....but  yet you apply a durable goods model...it doesnt apply here.  ( I wont elaborate for space)

I am sure we could split hairs over economic theory for hours, and i would love to...if you are ever passing through Oklahoma, I will buy you a beer and we can be nerds together.

In any event...I am just going to shut up and bow out with statement from Roy Taylor , " I would like to see us make piracy socially unacceptable in the same way that drunk driving is no longer socially acceptable"

and then there will come a day where a company releases their Magnus Opus, and only 1 copy will be sold worldwide because everyone will download it, and then it gets returned the next day for being defective.

I disagree on you calling horseshit on the demo thing.  If I'm unsure of a game and it has no demo I may download it to try it.  If I like it I will buy it, no question, I just like to support companies like that.  Now if I hate the game after 20 minutes and immediately delete it who is losing money and how?  I'm not steeling a game from a company by playing it for a few minutes to see if I like it or not and the only way I could see them losing money is because I would have bought a game I hate had I not tried it out first which is retarded as well.  If I was never going to spend any money to begin with nobody loses money?
