You could go with a nice FC (older mazda rx-7) although i heard that their rotary engines are pretty high maintanance. You might end up spending more fixing it than on the car itself, haha.

but in any case, if you buy a japanese car, its gonna last you longer than an american car.

lol i know, i also forgot about the hemi cuda.  it was a beast in every sense.  I think the charger was actually one of the best if not the best perfrormer, and like you said we all go for our own seperate tastes.  My ideal muscle car...well not muscle more so pony car was the copo camaro.  And the ultimate american sports car to me was the c3 427 corvette.

i've thought about getting a rotory but like you heard they'll give me the same amount of problems any american car with equal miles would.  They're testy especially because since rotories are so different from regular combustion engines nobody really understands how to take good care of them (me included).  And i know a japanese car would outlast an american.  I've had 2 dodges and 3 hondas.  I'm just tired of underpowered fwd grocery getters. haha.

damnit! its too bad thats over my budget otherwise....i'd fly over.

None of your muscle car shite... for cheap thrills an AWD rally car is best. Depending on how old a car you want, if you are prepared to go way back look around for one of the original audi quattro's, or one of the earlier Evo's (back from when they could actually compete in WRC).

i'd love to have one but if i were to find out that was in good condition it'd most likely be out of my price range.  and mitsubishi's never really done that well in WRC, if Audi didnt beat them, Peugeuot did, if not them, subaru, if not them the cosworths.  But rally is the most intense motorsport there is.  I would be completely scared shitless to drive around a dirt road on a cliff at 100+ mph.  ridiculous...

yeah i didn't look up the prices, but if you seriously want a car that is entertaining to drive you may as well hold out for a bit and save up some more... an Evo IV, which was the only one that was really competative (Makinnen won it in 1996 or 1997 with it.... cant remember which) was the one i was thinking of... about  6 - 7k i've seen them for... same for the quattro... allthough they can go to 10k easily... and i know the Evo isn't as good as the Subaru competatively but from what i have heard they are more fun to drive (no one here has either so i cant try 'em out because insurance for people our age on one of them is absofuckinglutely massive... 4 or 5 k + for an engine that size...)

keep an eye out though... there are often some that become available quite cheap because the owners just want rid of them quick... look it up, most reasons cited are "kid on the way"...

oh an what the hell's up with that link?!?!? the font is huge!!!!!
yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

I own a Mitsubishi Lancer ES which is the base model down from the EVO and i do have a lot of fun driving that car, but when i worked at a Suby dealership as a lot attendent i found that that WRX or STI are really fun to drive plus the fact that they have all wheel drive. Seeing is how you cant afford a STI i would look into a older WRX Imprezza or if you go older it will just be Imprezza. Thoughs cars are built well and last awile.

but you can never beat American Muscle almost anything from 1973 and below is the way to go.

Comparing the Lancer ES to the EVO is like comparing diet Ginger Ale to Ginger Beer. Its a very, very watered down version of the real thing.

Anyways, you gotta consider a few things here. First, any old Audi Quattro (or any old Audi for that matter) will be a pain in the ass to keep properly maintained. Same with a corvette. I personally would go for something more practical. Cars I would suggest:

Saab 900 1996-1998

Volvo 240 1985-1989

BMW 3 series E30 1984–1991

BMW 2002 1970-1973

Mercedes-Benz 300D (1976-1986)

Also, to get a better idea, check out http://forums.thecarlounge.net/zeroforum?id=1. I visit these forums frequently and they are very helpful.

You're all missing the bigger picture.  He isn't buying the bike because his girlfriend said no.

Need to really think about that homey.

There is a big problem with thoughs Euro cars. Because when you need to buy a part for one of thoughs, you have to pay an arm and a leg just to get it, and that is not including the instalation fees.

Spell check is your best friend :)

I've personally dealt with these cars, and no you don't. Two of the cars I mentioned (Volvo and Mercedes) are famously known as some of the strongest cars ever built. These cars easily top the 300k mark. You might pay a small premium for a part (if you're not resourceful and try a salvage yard), however these cars will rarely break on you. The E30 BMW is also a winner, the 2002 BMW is a ton of fun and again can be reliable if you're smart (can rust, but I don't know where he lives). The Saab I threw in as an extra, however all this applies. If you're just looking for a reliable car, go for the Volvo.

agreed.  all of those before the mid-late 90s were leaders in reliability.  however i remember several people relating their electrical nightmares with early (e30 being the worst) bmws.  i know mechanics better than electronics.

I use it when im on my computer, but since im not on my computer im not going to istall it on others because for one its not mine, and two because im not going to be using them for very long so it be a waist. You just have to deal with my bad speeling for a little longer  lol

Volvo does make a rock of a car, but as for BMW yah the new models may be really nice but once they get older they do have elictrical problems and start to.....well.....just go to shit. Actully what am i saying, see all cars can be the best of the best, but you need a key thing for them to be that way. Schedualed maitnence, but the problem with that is that sooooooooo many people out there never keep up with that so sooooooo many could have been good cars go to shit. So where you go you can find a good car from every make and model, but there are a few that still last long even if they have been treated like shit. Like Suby, Volvo, Honda (but they suck), Mitsubishi not soo much, Mercedes kinda, SOME Fords, BMW kinda, VW kinda.

When you buy a BMW all you are getting is a really nice engine and teh logo to go with it...German cars usually are rock solid in the engine dept.... but recently they are getting a reputation not to be as reliable in other areas... same for some Japanese cars... particularly the cheaper ones... in fact the only cars i know that NEVER seem to give anybody any problems are skoda and toyota/lexus... (as well as recent ford models, probably Europe only models though). But those wont do here...

I still say fuck it, go with an older iconic model that you know will be always be in demand... like the quattro or GTI... even if you can't afford them, take out a personal loan because at this stage they aren't going to decrease in value... in fact, cars that are still raced will simply become rarer and rarer as they are crashed out of competition, so in 10 - 20 years time your car could pay off the deposit of a house if you choose the right model and keep it well (and in original spec... no leopard skin seats, uber flared arches and shite)
yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

Ive got an 85 BMW 325e. It sat in our parking lot for about 6-7 years, uncovered, so it had a bunch of water problems, once fixed it was really solid. I recently had to replace the clutch and some minor fixes. Other than that its really nice, handles nicely and exceeds my general expectations of a car 21 years old.

EDIT: Oh yea, and as someone said earlier, buying parts can be a bitch. I tried a few scrap yards with no luck (I wasnt exactly sure what I was looking for to begin with). I ended up ordering a few parts from the east coast, and one from Europe.
