Am I missing some kind of furfag porn? Short form of it is that this girl and love interest of the protagonist (and the last of some "ancient" race) gets run through by the main antagonist. The joke is in having death as part of the storyline in a game that has an item that can bring people back to life. They never explain why she, or anyone else who died for the story, can't just be brought back with Phoenix Downs (the item). Because phoenix downs are a combat trick. It's like asking how it's not realistic to be able to carry 100 potions on you or 12 different swords. Hell, the whole concept of saving is highly unrealistic. You, sir, are obviously not an RPer. Though I'll admit the inventory thing has always been difficult to explain in-character... I play DnD every month at EA games. I am so an RPer. :D

Noob.

Characters don't have GUIs! (I wonder how long and pointless we can make this....)

But the initial complaint about them not using a phoenix down on Aerith is a similar argument. It's for a story purposes. The phoenix down is just a game mechanic for the players.

It might be a game mechanic but it's observable by the characters; hence one using it on another one if during battle - it takes their turn to do it, even!
