I take it back....... soooooo boring.  Miles and miles of winding, mapless tunnels filled with useless crap, stilted and lifeless AIs that haven't advanced an ounce since Oblivion, and a world/story so monotonous I literally began drifting to sleep.  At least with Oblivion we got a fancy fantasy world with demons and castles and stuff -- this is just grey and depressing.  The whole time I played, every time I spoke to someone I said to myself "Geez, man, your life really sucks!" over and over until I finally asked myself "Why the heck am "I" still here??"

I hate to be ranting, but it literally feels like Bethesda was just cashing on the Oblivion game engine, strip out the medieval and insert apocalyptic.  But in my opinion they stripped out some of the good things (beautiful setting, magic/arcane powers, ability to SELL ALL THE SHIT YOU FIND), kept some of the bad/mediocre (AI dialogue so stiff I've felt more depth from my DOS prompt (and what's with the "gotta zoom in, gotta lock your focus like iron on the person you're talking to?), AI combat so pointless it makes me wonder why I'd use a gun in the first place (all they do is run at you!!!)), and god help you if you run out of "I-can-pause-the-battle-and-target-individual-parts" Action Points.

I'm not whining, I didn't die or find it too hard, I just didn't enjoy myself for more than about 5 minutes in.  Sorry guys.
Get em!

It's a glorified shooter, so get it for the PC and hope that some day enough people will mod it that it will be good.

I am having a blast with this game.  I never played Oblivion so I can't really comment on all the, "Oblivion with guns" comments.  I can say that to me it feels like "Fallout with a different camera."  Exploring the wastes, finding settlements, having lots of options with how I talk to everyone and having those choices significantly impact the game.  Having lots of choices with how I build my character and having that impact the game.  All these things add to the freedom that, for me, defines what Fallout is suppose to be all about.  The combat system seems like a very well built merging of a turn bassed RPG and an FPS.  You can ignore VATS and run and gun but your life will be harder for it.  I've played the game every night since I got it till 5am and I'm still having a ball.

I agree that mods could enhance the game but I certainly feel I've gotten more than my money's worth and I still have lots of game to go.  I'm already planning out how my second and third play throughs will be different than my first.

If you have a good system I would highly recomend buying the PC version and doing it on Steam as the PC version is suppose to run better, will almost certainly have better mod support, and the Steam version comes without extra DRM.

Good to see more people having fun with this game.

How's Fallout 3 different than Fallout 1/2 in your opinion?

I can't put my finger on it but for some reason, the older Fallout had this Cowboy-Western feel to it that I miss sorely in this one. I liked the idea of gunslinging from town-to-town, joining gangs and robbing shops. For some reason, this one had all these elements, but it feels different. Maybe we just need a sand-mod or something.

I've enjoyed it a lot so far.  My only real gripe so far  is that the world seems kinda... shallow.   One of the things I loved about Oblivion was reading all the books.  You have books in Fallout 3, but only "burned books" or similar crap.  It would be great to have more information about the world that you could read from in books, newspapers, etc.  Also, the radio is boring as hell.  It's like being at work, everything repeated every 10 minutes.
Whut Whut in the butt.

I think, having played both, it feels more like the former. But I really wasn't expecting Bethesda to make Fallout 3 a completely separate entity from The Elder Scrolls, since I've no real reason to believe they're able to do anything other than Elder Scrolls, so it didn't come as a shock. There is a clear effort to at least try to replicate the dark humor and freedom of Fallout, though there are enough recycled gameplay mechanics, character behavior algorithms, and the like that it is unmistakably made by the same people. I don't dislike it so far, but it would be cool if Interplay's brewing comeback was a huge success and they were able to reclaim the license to make Fallout 4.
