If they cannot pay you, it's time to get another job.  Don't work for free unless you're a partner in the venture.

If they want you bad enough, then they need to offer you an interest in the company as an alternative to a regular paycheck.

Quite true.  You do not want to be a pawn.  Not sure your relationship with thee folks, but they could be using you for their ends.

A good idea that I'll have to think about. Off the bat I see two downsides, a) I can't live with $0 salary b) shares in the company would be worth $0 if it goes under. However, if/when we get a new influx of cash, I might be able to leverage something here. Also to consider the fact that I'm now carrying the weight of the other guy who's now gone...

Good news: Consulting company we founded is taking off nicely; we have some customers. Investor promised more money last week.
Bad news: It's been quiet. A little too quiet. Plus I have yet to be paid. They now owe me 2 months pay +benefits +my expenses which amounts to a lot.

When any decision pertains to my livelihood, I often base my answer based on the question "What if this were the Italian mafia?"

FACTS:
- They have promised you the money.. at a later day
- They're two months behind on the payment.

What would the mafia do?

....Or, instead of murdering people, you could just start selling the office equipment on craigslist to get your due.
