2010 Golf TDI. 2-door in gray with DSG, sunroof, and cold weather package. I have never loved a car the way I love her. On the drive home I was doing ~100mph and still getting around 35mpg. In theory I should save at least $50 a month in fuel costs, and it's safer and so much more fun to drive than my old car. It's crazy responsive, you put your foot down and it takes off with enough force to knock you back in your seat. Still not used to the weird diesel engine sound, it's kind of freaky to get out while it's running because my first thought when hearing it is always "wtf is wrong?!?!", I'm sure I will get used to it eventually. The only thing I really don't like about it is the insane touch screen stereo. Why the fuck is there touchscreen anything in a car?! I'm too busy driving to stare at a screen just to figure out how to change CDs (I haven't actually figured out how yet), I'd like some fucking tactile feedback please. Maybe I will learn to love it but so far it seems overly complicated and like it's just there to seem high tech and cool, I hate shit like that unless it's got laserbeams. Finally, we're getting some of the diesel tech that has been available in Europe for years. As usual, the American car companies are not the ones that are offering it. How does the turbo feel on a diesel? Can you upgrade anything with mods for the engine, etc.? "I love the smell of napalm in the morning. Smells like ... victory"

Supposedly all the other companies are taking a wait and see attitude, on letting us have the good engines here. I was seriously considering waiting for the Ford Fiesta to come out but then they said they wouldn't bring their high tech diesel with it, the rest of the world gets 75mpg and decent performance but not us. It's crazy, the Euros are over 50% diesel now, and growing. Anyways, my TDI is so much fun, as far as being one of the very few currently produced diesel powered cars available in the US I don't think a better choice could be made. You can do upgrades, supposedly some simple chip tunes can produce significant boosts to HP and torque. Maybe when my warranty runs out I will try those things, for now I want to break her in nice and spend some time commuting 120miles a day. I really want a bigger gas tank too. How does the turbo feel on a diesel? Can you upgrade anything with mods for the engine, etc.? Stock it runs 8.6 : 0-60 Pretty decent for a 32/42 mpg diesel. (though with Diesel prices in the southwest being about 30 cents higher per gallon than gas, it makes sense to me why people are not just jumping on the diesel bandwagon when choosing a hypermile automobile.) The car will probably last forever as well. Well, the engine and transmission, anyway. Quote:

The car will probably last forever as well. Well, the engine and transmission, anyway. They have a GTD model coming over from Europe sometime in the next year or so that's quite a bit faster. I think mine is like 236lb of torque which is supposed to be crazy high for a stock car of its size, I don't know much about that stuff though. The EPA rating for mileage is apparently way off also, I don't know what the deal is with how they calculate it but apparently everyone reports better mileage. Considering that I got around 37mpg out of my first tank and I've been driving it hard to break the engine in I have no clue wtf the EPA was doing to come up with the numbers they did. Maybe they have special diesel tests in which they load the car with fat people and then tow another car... Around here diesel is 20 to 30 cents more expensive than regular gas currently. Compared to my old car which got 30mpg in the best case scenario of steady cruise control on the freeway, I should still save money on fuel. If nothing else I'll have to pump less often, my old car could do about 300 miles per tank, my Golf should do over 700 miles once the engine has finished its break in. Considering that I drive around 2500 miles a month that's a lot less stopping for gas. After doing the research on this purchase I have no clue why the US hasn't started transitioning to the new clean diesel tech like Europe has. Over 50% of cars in the EU are diesel now, in the US it's less than 1%. You get the MPG of a hybrid without sacrificing performance, and unlike hybrids and electrics you don't have to deal with a few thousand pounds in toxic waste and there's no need for rare exotic metals stripmined from the Chinese countryside. It's all well established technology, and when the shit really hits the fan you can make diesel fuel out of algae or garbage or fucking dead bodies if you have to. It's just crazy to me that Ford sells diesel cars everywhere else in the world that get more than 65mpg and still have awesome performance but in the US the only diesels available are from the German car makers. Well here is some epic fail: My credit union approved me for a loan to pay for the car. They said go get it and bring us the purchase order. I went and got the car. I visited my credit union yesterday to spend "5 minutes signing papers". Instead I sat there for an hour while some fucktard did a bunch of data entry in front of me and then told me that they can't give me the loan. WHAT THE FUCK?!?! The issue is that I rent my house out. In order to prove that to them a years worth of cashed checks from my renters isn't enough. On the phone LAST WEEK it was enough. No idea what changed. So first he says they need a rental contract. I don't have one written up because in this state you don't need a bunch of fancy words on a signed piece of paper to constitute a legal contract, I've rented to friends and people friends vouch for so we worked out the details in email and have called it good. It's sufficient documentation to constitute a contract if for some improbable reason we had to litigate a dispute. I tell the dude this and he says, well you need to have a signed contract because it guarantees the income. I'm like, huh? I have a years worth of cashed checks, how does having them sign a piece of paper change anything? My bank scans their checks and posts them in my account, it's about as thorough of documentation as you can get. He's like yeah but unless you have a contract the income could stop at any time. I'm like, orly? I could lose my job at any time too, what's the difference? Unfortunately his brain is not equipped for logical thought and this greatly confuses him. So I say sure, I'll go have them sign a contract, it's not that big of a deal. Then he says they want my 2009 tax return showing the rental income on it. I don't have a 2009 tax return because it's fucking January and I haven't done my taxes yet!!! I don't even have my W2 from my employer, I probably won't get it until next month. How the fuck can I show a tax return for taxes I can't file yet? It's an impossible request. I have no idea what the fuck has gone wrong here (besides luck of the draw in getting a total fucking idiot to process my loan) but I've now got a car and no funding to pay the dealer for it. I may be kinda fucked. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

They already tried politely telling me to fuck off by offering a much smaller loan, i.e. one which does not actually cover the cost of the car. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

They let you take possession of the car without documented financing? That's a new one. I'd check with the dealer to see if they can help with another finance deal. At least you could use that to twist your credit unions arm on the issue. "I love the smell of napalm in the morning. Smells like ... victory"

Did you write down the name of the person who you originally talked with? If it were me I would be telling the branch manager about him/her. I hope you get this figured out quickly and can continue telling us about your awesome realworld MPGs.
