This really just sounds like hardcore server vs. noob friendly/creative server. If we end up getting a lot of people who want both, I think it would make sense for us to have two servers. One with vanilla, hardcore minecraft and one for people who want to putz around with building things without getting griefed too badly. It sounds like Rik is doing the right thing at the moment. Honestly, I love/hate creeper damage. As Porgon pointed out, it makes it so that you have to maintain your property, which is kind of nice. However, in the infantile stages of this minecraft thing, I don't see too much of a problem with it being off right now. Ultimately, Rik has THE POWAAAAH! Since its his server and everything, but yeah. If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe. - Carl Sagan My Backpack

You were not there when i asked about these things in the game with him ..I was nice and i did try to see it from his point of veiw he even said he would put up a vote about it which is why i was fine with it till weeks later still nothing and now his new stance on it it doesn't change the fact that most people think Jews are much like the Ferengi of Star Trek. Shut the fuck up Frostbite, I know what i am doing i been playing TF2 for 8 fucking years i know how to run my damn servers-Erkdog

if he wants to remove all monsters .. its done nothing can be said if he wants to remove the need for mining ..Oh well He don't like it Pvp fun and game modes ....Naaa i dont like it so bye This is kind of where you lose your credibility, bud. The only point of actual contention is the Creeper damage, which honestly I think is pretty silly. Everything else is open to change. PvP has already been re-enabled. As I said and you seemingly ignored, the only reason I disabled it was because open PvP is against the rules and consensual PvP was never mentioned as something wanted. Quote:He even said he would not even play there anymore if we happen to get creeper shit turned back on ...Overreaction much It's not overreaction. I don't want to build things knowing others' could indirectly cause their destruction, nor do I want to be responsible for a server that, over time, looks worse and worse due to the accumulative damage caused by Creepers. Prior to finding the WorldGuard plugin I wouldn't have cared, but now I know Creeper terrain damage can be disabled. Claiming I'm overreacting about this is like claiming I'm overreacting by leaving a TF2 server for one that's 24/7, instant-spawn 2Fort. That's the environment I enjoy playing in, so that the environment I'll seek out. Yes, that subsequently means leaving the clan Minecraft server. "Overreacting" would be me shutting the server down altogether for not getting things my way, which has never been on the table. In fact I'm for *more* servers so everyone can get what they want. Quote:The Whole reason he turned it off is because he was and is still new to the game and refuses (yes REFUSES ) to make a defense to Stop creepers from getting near the structures he wants to protect on the baises it looks bad to do it ..We talked about this all last night on minecraft and it that was his whole reasoning ..Not the long term land damage ..not any other excuse
cause he just dont want to work. While I do think it's a bit preposterous to have your architectural designs dictated by one damage type of one monster, you'll find I have defenses around almost all of my structures. In fact I've used water holes and flowing water to trap or move away monsters, lava moats to kill monsters, and cacti/water to kill monsters and retrieve their drops. In most cases I've build them into my architecture in a pleasant way. Quote:Its like getting a new online game and finding a feature that is hard/annoying to deal with because you are new and don't know how to counter it ...No shit most people would turn it off and make it easier for them ..as you said people want to feel like they are winning
Ever see a newbie in tf2 get owned by spys or engies ?.. When i first joined they bugged the hell out of me and i really did hate them , OP! but i learned to deal with them and everything is fine now ..they are part of the game you dont have to like them ...just cause you can remove them dont mean you should.
Btw go look at creeper damage , on stone its like 1 block ..it only effects Dirt/gravel/sand more then that.. I'm quite aware of creeper damage. It's one power lower than TNT.

I do need to stop you on one point rik, that you've brought up again and again "While I do think it's a bit preposterous to have your architectural designs dictated by one damage type of one monster," There are only five monsters in minecraft. ( not including the nether - which isn't currently available in online ) Spiders, Skeletons, Zombies, Creepers, and a very - very rare spawn - the skeleton riding a spider. So really four. Your argument doesn't hold up as well under that light - especially when as I've stayed previously - Creepers are the ONLY mob that remains aggressive in sunlight ( Spiders turn passive, and skeletons and zombies die. ) Not all monsters are created equal, and really creepers are the only ones you should be building around - building around zombies, spiders, and skeletons simply involves four walls and a roof to keep them away until sunlight. There is a reason creepers are the meme of choice for Minecraft. Dick Cheney's Mechanical Heart wrote:Porgon made me cry so hard last night when he kept getting me from behind over and over again.

There is a reason creepers are the meme of choice for Minecraft. For a pure Survival server, sure. In a pure Survival environment your primary purpose is to survive and secondary purpose is to build to augment your survivability. Naturally a monster that destroys buildings works there because destroying your buildings means hurting your survivability. But this isn't a pure Survival server. It's primary purpose is to give us a place to create an environment of our own with the Survival mechanics present to add challenge to material acquisition and make creation more rewarding. Here we're not building for survival, we're building to build. It's no longer a matter of a monster destroying buildings to damage our survivability; them destroying our buildings usually just means they're destroying our buildings. This makes their terrain/structure destruction contrary to the primary purpose of the server. That's why I'm for a second, pure Survival server. Where survival is the primary focus, Creeper terrain destruction makes more sense. Construction is for survivability, which doesn't require things to look nice--just functional. Less elaborate architecture is also more expendable, allowing for periodic resets where a Creation server doesn't. Your arguments make sense, but only in terms of a Survival server. Right now we have a hybrid. Hybrids mean compromises for the desired effect, and Creeper terrain damage is simply contrary to the Creation focus the server currently has.

I well and truly don't understand this idea that in survival you build only for survivals sake. you see giant dongs built pretty much no matter what server you go to. But, rolling that back for a moment - you say it's a hybrid server, which is interesting because you've proven time and time again you don't know even the basics of minecrafts design. And so since I've asked this on server - I'll post it here so you can have time to perhaps stop and think about your answer before you come up with it. What is currently survival about the server? The creation aspect is there - as it is in damn near any server, it's not like there's a minecraft server without blocks - it's rather part of the game. However there is nothing qualifying this as even partially a survival server. The solution to start a second, vanilla server is a good one - perhaps before starting it there should be a topic about it and set up the guidelines to settle the problems we've encountered in this one, like say - territory claiming and what the course of action should be when challenges about it arise ( protip - it's not to assume the other party is joking, and then destroy their building on what is rightfully their land. It tends to make things disappear, from what I hear ) Dick Cheney's Mechanical Heart wrote:Porgon made me cry so hard last night when he kept getting me from behind over and over again.

The creation aspect is there - as it is in damn near any server, it's not like there's a minecraft server without blocks - it's rather part of the game. However there is nothing qualifying this as even partially a survival server. See... the fact you even ask this question strikes me as ridiculous. The only thing in contention is that Creepers don't destroy terrain. That is one small mechanic among many, yet you seem to to use it as the pivot point between "Being Survival" and "Not being Survival at All". But I'll humor you by itemizing some of the things that make it Survival: - You gather resources to build - You craft tools to gather resources - You craft armor and weapons for defense and to help explore/gather resources - You have health and can die - There are monsters that attack, damage, and can kill you - The environment can kill you through burning, drowning, suffocating, falling. All of those things exist only in the Survival form of the game. And you make the claim that there's nothing about the server qualifying it as survival? Yeah.... Go play Creative/Classic for a while and maybe you'll understand what Survival is. If all the server was was Creative then none of us would have even needed to buy the game. That version is free. Quote:The solution to start a second, vanilla server is a good one - perhaps before starting it there should be a topic about it and set up the guidelines to settle the problems we've encountered in this one, like say - territory claiming and what the course of action should be when challenges about it arise ( protip - it's not to assume the other party is joking, and then destroy their building on what is rightfully their land. It tends to make things disappear, from what I hear ) Which can't work at this time since my server can't handle another instance. Unless someone else has a server available to host it. Then it makes sense to start the topic now.

I'll summerise this entire argument. Rikaelus wrote:And you seem to think servers can only function as designed by the creators. You know what's also part of Minecraft's design? The capacity to mod it. Absolutely! however we wanted to play minecraft. Aaaannnnyyyways. There's little point in continuing this any longer. If either of us hoped to solicit support for our side, I don't think anyone finds it so important as to take a firm stance for or against it. And going in circles for pages on end won't change that; nobody new will want to read it. Muff's right in that this comes down to hardcore vs. noob friendly. If everyone were pro like you, it'd be safe to assume everyone knows how to avoid Creeper explosions and the damage to terrain and others' structures will be minimal. But the safer assumption is that not everyone will be pro, explosions will happen, the terrain will be damaged, and accidental damage will be caused to others' creations. The game isn't even out of beta yet, and a lot of people here are picking it up for the first time. The road ahead is full of a lot more newcomers than it is pros. Most people will learn by playing. There will be Creeper explosions. There will be accidental forest fires. Shit happens. One persons' learning experience shouldn't negatively impact other players. In a primarily cooperative, creative environment, I'd think that'd be a given.

Those who are comfortable with the balance as it is now would be more inclined to stay near spawn. As it is we want to encourage people to get a bit of distance. Personally I'm for increasing to-player danger some more. I actually looked for a plugin that would make Creepers explode into lava or something. =P

Soooo your design philosophy is that there should be no learning curve, and anything that can't be handled within a week of picking up a game shouldn't exist in it. Interesting. Interesting. Quite the opposite. There should be learning curves, but others' shouldn't suffer as a result of someone's learning process. If someone new to the game is near others' structures and fighting Creepers, the creators of those structures shouldn't suffer when those Creepers explode and cause structural damage. If someone new to the game places lava near trees not realizing that lava causes nearby flammables to catch fire, everyone else shouldn't have to deal with the landscape--and possibly their own structures/farms--being destroyed by an out-of-control forest fire. In fact I explicitly recall Frostbite being relieved that the fire I started didn't get to his tree farm. It sure came close to it, though. This isn't TF2 where, if you're new, you die a lot and *may* play a part in your team losing a single little round. Here a small mistake can lead to the destruction of something someone else spent a lot of time making. It only makes sense that we try to minimize that where there's little cost in doing so. In fact... one little misclick with a bucket of lava in hand and you could wipe out an entire chest full of someone's obsidian. If someone builds a city with wood as part of the architecture, a dropped bucket of lava or a lighter could cause their entire city to burn down. Placing some protections against such things aren't "OMGWTFBAD!"... they're common sense. This game isn't about any one person; it's about everyone.
