Rik, what'd a budget be for a new 24 player server? Same for a new site that ditches the old and dieing and brings in something new? Nothing wrong with keeping the Penguin Doom Squad and just ditch the ode de WDF's ego. Somewhat expensive. I think the one bragr was renting came to around $50/month, or $300 every 6 months, as he paid it. Owning our own server is more economical long term and would give us multiple game servers, but obviously the up-front cost is hard to get together. Plus it's really painful to pay that kind of money regularly when the server would probably be inactive at least 75% of the time--and that's assuming it was played for 6 hours every evening. It's just not a good cost-to-gain ratio. I can expedite getting a new website online if we rebrand things. I'd abandon my ground-up CMS coding which I'd wanted to do for a long time, but realistically that's not going very fast. The software I started from and ran a few communities on is old, but useable. And I can continually update that as needed. I can look around for newer software but there are pros/cons to that, the foremost con being that I'm not familiar with its code, which would limit customization. There'd still be some challenge, of course, in rebranding things. I still have gamersyndicate.com, if we wanted to build on that. I'd just like to get some graphics for it, maybe a mascot akin to our cigar smoke'n penguin, or some other recurring imagery/theme that fits the ominous "syndicate" name.

Hey crap, I noticed I wasn't specifically mentioned in there even though I played with you this last week. =O I know that I can't be a leader. My personality needs some sort of framework to work with. =\ I've been randomly playing with the MAD clan, they seem really active...the problem is that their servers are run like a babysitter. No, seriously, Ms. Skies is literally babysitting the people in their clan. I joined once to have her berate the admins for not doing "the right thing" instead of it being more in private. It seemed really unprofessional. Sometimes I wish the clan was super active and had lots of people, but part of me is also glad I get to be a part of the old farts club. TF2 is still the best rally point we have, nothing else really comes close in my opinion. ...if we were to eventually have another TF2 server (doubtfully) I'd really love a semi-vanilla TF2 mode. Like, none of these special weapons. Only the originals and the very first class updates. =) That would be really nice. A new forum only makes sense if we're going to be more active in the internet game community. Otherwise it would just be a new place for nothing to happen. =\ If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe. - Carl Sagan My Backpack

In fact, if we don't actively have a way to recruit, I suspect a new site/brand would actually hurt things. People would take it as a sign it's not even the "old fart's club" anymore. Especially when so many people who post here have been gone for a long time and just hit up wdfnews.com randomly. Even if we redirected it to a new site, they'd be less inclined to post. Like you said, we need a rally point. Which means game servers, and preferably enough of them that they can cater to the likes of different players. Honestly, just having a single server running official maps won't cut it. If not for the 24/7 2Fort server wdfnews.com use to have, I doubt I'd even be here today. We need to be able to target the different niches at the same time to really find new blood.

If we were to rebrand we could always do something like: GamerSyndicate Formerly WDFNews to ease the process or something. That's obviously not in the immediate future. Quote:Razor: As hard as one might try no one will ever be able to pull one over on Super Penguin. Backpack of Win

The site lacks a purpose now. Most of us were brought here by TF2 which, while still technically around, is not the community draw that it once was. Even as TF2's popularity waned, the site was bolstered for a time by the social connections that had been built up around it. But when no successful replacement came around and the conversations here became slowly more infrequent, the regulars showed up less and less. Whut's dramatic departure/return/departure added some needless instability to the vision for the community, but for a site that lived and died almost entirely in the sunlight of a single game, this end was inevitable. It may just be me in my progressing maturity and lack of time to obsess about games, but I can't see a way to revive this place. Every time I visit, I expect to find that it is now offline permanently. It's sad, but there are too many similar sites and too little to recruit new people and retain them.I'll be sad when it's gone for good. I've had good times here, fun times, childish times. I've written heartfelt game reviews for the news section that I put passion and invested serious time into. I've made MS Excel graphs to prove points about HLStatsX tweaks and argued endlessly about now utterly meaningless rules and community policies. But the site has lost its purpose, and without vision or funding won't ever do so again I don't think. It's been fun though! Don't forget about me! nate. mallory@gmail.com, and if there ever appears to be a resurgence of our former members, either here or elsewhere, hit me up and I'll be right onboard. tl;dr summary: we can't fix it. It's been a while now since TF2 went F2P, but when it did there was quite a burst of players. When I put the 16 slot server up shortly after, the thing literally filled on its own before I even got half way through configuring it. I wouldn't completely count it out as a base. If we could get 2-3 TF2 servers running well--a general server and a couple niche servers--I think that could attract at least some baseline attention. Our MOTD could advertise servers of other games we host also. Minecraft. Maybe a L4D2 server. We could then expand into even other games to increase our general appeal. We'd potentially cement some new membership by getting them into games other than what lead them to us. It's not impossible. A challenge, to be sure, but not impossible. It just requires hardware to get those game servers running. I'd honestly buy a server on credit card right now, if I didn't fear having to buy a new air conditioner in the next couple years, which will definitely have to go on credit card.

That settles it. I'm an old foggie (though you're 8 months older than me, Rik, I believe). I'm not all that interested in the next great gaming community or trying to revive this one on the back of TF2 alone. I'm not sure I can articulate what it would be, but I want a place to come talk about OTHER things besides map rotations. But I'm not even so sure what you're suggesting would be possible. "When TF2 went F2P..." more than six months ago? Do you really think there's a community's worth of life left in that 5 year old game?? Maybe I'll be totally proven wrong and Valve will create an entirely revolutionary TF3 that brings everyone back to the watering hole, but I doubt it and we're left with the same problem. I'm not sure I can articulate what it would be, but I want a place to come talk about OTHER things besides map rotations. Oh I agree completely. That's why I can't see myself just ditching this place for someplace else. There's at least enough of us old timers here that we're comfortable talking about... odd things, besides gaming. A broader spectrum of conversations, I think, is what makes a gaming site a "community". And we have that basis, even if largely inactive. One of the things I've long wanted to do--and would probably insist on if/when we redo the site--is make all the forum topics more obvious. What they're called now has some fun references, but they can lack clarity to newcomers and make general conversation a bit less accessible. I think TF2 could still be a starting point, but yeah.. it definitely wouldn't revive things all by itself. Valve tends to make some really accessible games, and ones that are easy to host servers for. Eventually we'll get either Episode 3 or, better, Half-Life 3. That alone could easily bring attention back to some older Valve games (TF2, L4D) or might usher in a new generation of Steam games. If we're positioned to hop on that bandwagon, we could rejuvenate the site pretty quickly, I think. I honestly feel the TF2 F2P wave could have really helped things here, had we been in a position to take advantage of it.

Ooh, good point, Valve did say they were planning on including some aspect of multiplayer in all of their future games. Quote:Razor: As hard as one might try no one will ever be able to pull one over on Super Penguin. Backpack of Win

I largely agree with Endyss. If we are to become any version of what we once were, then TF2 is not the answer. Most of us came here through it, but at this point it is a 5 year old game that doesn't have the same luster it once did. I feel it is time to move on from TF2 and on to greener pastures, such as the Moba scene, or to Tribes. Maybe even make a push for the MMO field when Guild Wars 2 comes out (since i know lots of people aren't a fan of monthly fees). While Valve is indeed putting multiplayer content into its games, it is currently limited as far as community is concerned. The next big release from them is DotA2. Now while that will possess the multiplayer and community backbone we need, it is also a game and genre that we haven't been too involved in. I don't even know who all here plays this style of game, be it DotA classic, HoN, or LoL. As far as Half-Life 3 or even just episode 3, these seem to be mere whispers in the dark, stranded in a place of no news or information about if they are even in development. So waiting for those could put us on an easily 5 year hiatus. I know I don't want that, so i definitely feel we need to start looking around for a new game to rally behind. at least if we want this community to survive. Bah Weep Granah Weep Ninny Bong

at least if we want this community to survive. I know a few of us play LoL and Drakhen, Frostbite, and Porgon play HoN. DotA2 might be a good reboot point for us. I also like the idea of Guild Wars 2. Can you imagine how many people we could bring in we were one of the first guilds in the game? Booyah. We tried Minecraft and BC3, and neither sparked any real interest here. I even bought BC3, played through it once, and never touched it after. I doubt going to a non-Valve/Steam game is going to work; at least not alone. If not TF2 specifically, we're all at least use to and generally enjoy the Valve culture of games. If/when we get a new server we should have the resources to diversify some, and hope some game gets us some bites, but that'll be a gamble. A Valve-based game we can at least have some confidence of being accepted--to some degree--by our current members, I think is pretty important. With MMOs it'd be hit or miss. Different people play MMOs differently. Case and point, I'm usually an RPer. If our guild were to be named Penguin Doom Squad, I wouldn't join it; it wouldn't fit my character. Others prefer raiding guilds, or guilds with their friends, etc. If we had a few guilds covering different playstyles, that'd maybe work, but it'd also spread people pretty thin. A shared channel to talk to each other on might be the more practical option. And that's assuming they don't have different servers we'd be spread across--I'm not sure how GW works that. I'm not trying to be negative... I just can't see us abandoning our common ground altogether working. At least not right away. We're a Valve culture here and while we can migrate to general gaming culture or even to some other genre, I don't think it can happen all at once.

I've put the question out before and BC2 had the most interest at the time, but even that was only 3-4 people, with only about half that really being deeply into the game. Quote:One fine little point that I realized behind the Moba/MMO scene is that we wouldn't have to pay for servers, which given our current size would be a major plus. We could go as far as offering guilds their own areas on the forums, bringing their members here who might hop to more general topics, becoming part of the larger gaming community. When we get the flexibility of a new site, what we can offer individual guilds/groups can increase, too, such as custom titles, site appearance, etc. So there's definitely some growth potential there, and we don't have to directly manage the guilds to benefit from their existence. Any we do manage, ourselves, well... it'll be up to the guild leader to represent us, recruit, and play that leadership role. The problem I have with trying to recruit outside of a TF2 type game is the atmosphere that TF2 has. Its completely relaxed - you can goof off in TF2 and lose and still have a good time. I freaking love BF3, but its much more stressful to me if my team is getting rolled. I still love TF2 because of how laid back or hardcore you can make it. I do like the idea of rallying behind some sort of MMO. That could be very useful, but regardless of the game we try to get involved in, we need a team of leaders that are willing to put in a lot of time and energy to keep the clan image exiting! "I want to join that clan, they seem like fun people!" needs to be the overwhelming image if we're going to recruit people. Retaining people is another thing, but we seem to have that down pretty well - communication about things other than just games helps mesh everyone tighter. Even if I don't always contribute to serious discussions on this site I still feel like a member of the old farts club, even if I'm still a young'un.
