"I want to join that clan, they seem like fun people!" needs to be the overwhelming image if we're going to recruit people. That's a huge thing, I agree. It's someplace I know I fall short, since I play games online very rarely now--most just aren't practical when you could be called away at any time to tend to a kid. Once upon a time I could have been a big help, when I was a community and guild leader in WoW, but those days ended before Whut handled me the mantle here. So we definitely need help from our members in this regard. Especially those who are heavily present in online games and can represent us. And even if that means bringing in different gaming cultures, we can always split up the forums to give each culture its own place to roost, in addition to "common areas' for more general discussions. P.S. There's actually still one gaming community I have ties to; a cross-guild organization whose website I host. When the time is right, I could send an open invitation to them to check this place out. Not yet, though. I don't think we're ready to take on another gaming culture just yet--and we might lack an appeal to them until we're actively branching out.

my thought would be to relaunch as www.thepenguinsyndicate.com keeps the us without the them that arent still active. Seems like a lotta people are still interested in TF2, and while a lot arent, theres no clear cut grouping that I've been able to notice as far as multiplayer gaming goes. I think we could easily grab some attention from other popular games like MW3 or BF and stuff, but it seems the folks who are putting energy in like super has been doing (and of course Rik you've been nothing short of amazing!) keep going with the TF2 thing. Just my thoughts, right now we lack any sort of activity besides a random message board, and clearly all that can really do is dwindle over time if we're not bringing in new members (and how many new members are we going to get from people googling for "wdf news"?)

It's supposed to be released sometime this year. This might be a way to build up membership since counter-strike is so popular. Anyway, I need to workout my new V3 Convoy computer

Where's the new website? I came here expecting the new website. Now I'm pissed, Rik, I can probably convince Sirus to let me host some sort of server (including this new fangled CSGOfuckyourself or whatever it is)... We should talk in privates. I miss you guys, but I am in the middle of being an adult and games are time consuming. School/Loans/Job/Life/Penis are all sort of priority over internets. But I do miss you guys.

TF2 is still the best rally point we have, nothing else really comes close in my opinion. HL2MP was our heyday. Our CTF HL2MP server was the most popular (ranked #1 omg!!!). We never did as well with TF2. TIME FOR SPAM POSTS!

Gamersyndicate is actually a really good name. I think you can have it both ways. Leave this site up, but disable it. Have it point to the new one. Include some reference to our angry penguin friend above there, so the old timers will know this is still the same rad bunch of people as it used to be, but drive it in a new direction. As for servers. It's important to settle on one game, have ONE server. One server that you idiots like playing on. Then start games with each other. No one is going to join an empty server and there are too few left to populate more than one server like we used to be able to. Let me show you a timeline that's probably mostly inaccurate of our growth: *WDF stumbles upon a modded HL2MP server running TFC maps *WDF is like OMG I LOVE THIS (as WDF was longing for a new TF). *WDF opens The Crypt *Due to the lack of modded HL2MP servers, the Crypt soon rivals the other guys' server (I honestly can't remember that group's name) *Over time, we grow. They continue to mod their server to stay ahead. We do the same with the help of POM and Sirus *Xbow Mod *We overtake those other guys in server popularity *The Tomb opens to handle overflow *Tomb grows as well. *Arrangement of clan battles with rival game server company happens often. It is the strongest feeling of being apart of a team I've ever experienced in my life. *TF2 comes out at the perfect time, as community interest is faltering. *THIS IS WHERE I DERAILED IT! WDF buys a bunch of servers and proceeds to open tons of servers without the playerbase to fill them. WDF forgets how we started, etc. *TF2 24/7 servers take hold. *tf2 rocks for a while. WDF tries to add a few specialty servers into the mix with mixed results *WDF runs out of time. Cannot manage six servers. Cannot code to save his life. Sirus is in his senior year and is like "fuck you asshole you do it." *WDF gets impatient and begins exploring other games to host in addition to TF2. Six games are tried in total. *Community begins to divide. Not enough players to fill our core server, let alone the eight or so bonkers servers. *WDF discovers that L4D is not a community building game, as it's all matchmaking. There's no loyalty. No one cares. Too small a player count. You can already play with friends anyway elsewhere. *WDF has a massive emotional collapse and leaves *Then comes back *Then Leaves *Then comes back *Then Leaves *Then Comes Back *Then Leaves, dumping this heaping pile of shit onto Rik. *AGES PASS *WDF returns and offers to negotiate with Sirus over use of our only remaining dedicated server to host a single game server for this community that WDF wants to be only marginally responsible for (read: not at all), as Sirus cannibalized Tempest 1 (my server of the three) for parts. A single game server is where you can rebuild a community from. It is the only way. It will also take some effort from all of the people interested to put in the time to play on the server, even if it's not their fav map or game type or whatever the fuck. It can't all fall onto Rik's lap. He has my support, and I will install and play (poorly) any game the community decides to host. If I can put in time (and I'm in tech or rehearsal almost 7 days a week these days), then you can too. I never check this site. Please contact me privately (Not through PM either, this shithole still doesn't email notifications)

Yep, I'd be all for archiving this site if Sirus is willing to continue hosting it. Being ASP.NET, it won't work on my Gentoo server. As much as I wanted to move all topics/users over to the new one, maybe a fresh (re-)start has its benefits. For one, forums aren't likely to line up. Second, even if users are copied over, the way passwords work probably won't be compatible, so they couldn't log in. Plus there are a lot of old user accounts of people who are long gone. This would clean the database. I could really reboot the site. I've put up 5-6 community sites in the past, and two of those have been from inheriting an older community. I've just been tentative to do anything seen as "distancing" from WDFNews.com, for fear it'd instantly lose the loyalty of the few people we have left here. Quote:A single game server is where you can rebuild a community from. It is the only way. It will also take some effort from all of the people interested to put in the time to play on the server, even if it's not their fav map or game type or whatever the fuck. We'd have to make sure to hit the mark as far as server config goes. I strongly believe a generic "official maps" server won't work on its own. That's the out-of-the-box config, more or less, and those servers are a dime a dozen. Plus, that's what Tempest largely was and it eventually diminished to nothing, despite the efforts of the community to seed it. We'd need to specialize and focus on maps that are consistently popular. Probably CP or PL maps. Keep the add-ons simple; I honestly feel that gimmicks like Quake sounds or the heavy use of UI add-ons just diminish from the gameplay. I think Drakhen and I struck a pretty good balance on the Tempest, Jr. If that's able to gain a following, maybe put up a 24/7 2Fort, Instant Spawn server afterwards, resources allowing. That way we'd have a CTF/DM-ish offering and target a huge niche of players. In my experience these servers can often get a following on their own. Especially with a sibling server with more options alongside it. You either love or hate 2Fort. It can empty a rotation server of general players, but can also fill a server with niche players. We'd have to treat it accordingly. On the side we can continue to host Minecraft on my server. That has the benefit of being just as valid when playing alone, so there's no need to seed or anything. If people want to play it, cool. If not, also cool. Quote:It can't all fall onto Rik's lap. He has my support, and I will install and play (poorly) any game the community decides to host. If I can put in time (and I'm in tech or rehearsal almost 7 days a week these days), then you can too. Agreed. If/when the new site gets online, my first goal is to find others to moderate it. I've hosted enough community sites to know to delegate certain duties, and step completely away from others.

Archiving this place is probably the best option, there's definitely a lot of history here, but who actually takes the time to look back on everything and reminisce? CS:GO is probably Valve's next big multiplayer server-filling game. I can't believe I didn't think of that sooner. The series has made a name for itself. It's going to attract attention for PC gamers. The type that are dedicated and looking to actually JOIN a community. It's impossible for us to get everyone currently in the community invested in a single game. We all came here looking for something different and those of us still here obviously found part of what we were looking for. As silly as this may sound, I came for the penguins and stayed for the ridiculous over-the-top conversations. I'm dedicated to this place though and even though a lot of that is missing, I still feel attached to each and everyone of you that I've talked to before. The assortment of personas we have here are incredible, if people just keep talking to one another, that's what this community is. It doesn't matter where we are or what we call ourselves. We're still the same people. It doesn't matter what game it is, we still like to play with one another. I started us off on a (though still somewhat shaky) competitive TF2 roll a week or two ago just because I missed playing with you incredible people. Let's go guns-blazing into the our next endeavor, be that GamerSyndicate.com or anyplace else. End rant-like post. Start...rationalism...? There are more than enough leaders buried beneath these forum posts to carry this place on. Having Whut host a server would seriously help us get off our feet provided we do it right. And I agree with what you said about building both the niche of a 24/7 2Fort and a contrasting Modded server. People like that. The thing about TF2 is that IT IS free to play. There are a lot more players now, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're trying to find a group of people that they want to play with. They may just be looking to smash a few heads in, BONK! I'm more than willing to help the community in anyway I can. I bet there are a few others out there that don't want to see this place become just a memory. We do need new blood though. I say we relaunch with NS2. Rik, Sirus will host the site. But let's hit the ground running. We host an NS2 server on day one of release. Shit is all ready to go prior to it unlocking on steam. We simply redirect the focus of this community on that game, as I feel it's the only real community based game on the horizon.. I will help. I wanna play NS2.

I will help. I wanna play NS2. Oooh. I never looked at the original and haven't been tracking the sequel, but at a quick glance: good call. The alien aspect inherently adds a quirkiness to the game that might help people not take it too seriously, which is great for community building. A game you can sit back and laugh at when dying is a much safer bet than one that frays nerves and makes enemies. If they have public servers during beta we might be at a slight disadvantage, but not a big one. We'll just have to research to see if any popular mods have already been created we should employ, or if it's safe to release as vanilla. Now we just need a graphic of a penguin riding one of the aliens...

Hey, the pointy haired dude is back or did he leave again? No, wait, he is back. Crap! Where'd he go now? I chuckled pretty hard at that little nugget by whut by the way. I am willing to try something new if it helps get it started. Gamewise, not sexually Cantrip. Put that thing away.
