Also, I would like to see pics of his cuteness, not just his poor shaved belly and red rocket. TYVM.

Here's what he looked like the day he came home. He was pretty miserable.

And we were told to keep an eye on his eye. Since he has a diminished capacity to clot blood, his eyes would be an indicator of a change in his condition. We had to watch to make sure it didn't get worse than this.

And here is what he looked like a little while ago. He looks better but still has low energy. He was able to play for about five minutes today and is holding down food well. Eyes were not any worse. Pic is a little blurry because he was wagging his tale and not holding still.

So we finished one of the immuno suppressant drugs - one we had to wear gloves to handle so we wouldn't come into contact with it. That only leaves 8 more drugs to be administered throughout the day, and night. I'm sure this is what parents go through. Or I imagine. I don't have any kids. -Well, none that I know of . . .

Here he is playing ball this afternoon. A little bit more energy today, but I still only tossed the ball a foot or two straight up into the air - don't want him bruised or cut for fear of a bleedout.

And today we caught a rat. After we came back from the hospital I set out some traps. Not certain if the dog got into one with poison in its system or possibly ate some poison brought along by one of the rats. There's a big parking lot behind the house which belongs to the municipality which has rats.

Please let it be rat poison; at least he would have a chance of a recovery unlike Leukemia or Lymphoma.

Anyway, here's the rat we caught by the back fence near the area with the poo pit. Very exciting day for the pup.

Today I found two of my traps had been tripped.

The first trap had been tripped, but I didn't catch anything. To add insult to injury, the damn rats ate my peanut butter bait.

:(

The second trap had the following juicy catch:

That is all. Carry on.

Happy Memorial Day weekend. Thank you to to our current and past servicemembers for your service to our country.

Just a few updates since the back yard will be the focus of this weekend.

First, the vet is supposed to call this weekend to report the latest bloodwork numbers. Hopefully his platelet count is up. We shall see.

Then there's the whole issue of the condition of the poo pit. If you recall from our last update, I had churned the whole mess with the pressure hose. It didn't go anywhere. No signs of live worms, though I may have drowned them. And Today I added a weeks' worth of poo. Not sure what all the 9 medications he has in his system will do to the mix. -Yeah, I'm starting to worry too.

Also, since I had the poop out for a while, there were a few flies that gathered so I decided to try a fly trap. I'll update this later when I catch something, but for now, here's what it looks like.

And finally, another rat fell victim to one of the traps.

Oddly, this particular rat was of the sub-genus Meenopleezz. Or a Meenopleezz Rat. The Meenopleezz rat is easily identified by its upturned hands as seen in the pic below.

The reason they are called the Meenopleezz rat is their increased brain function capacity allows them to capture and process information much faster than regular rats, but their ability to respond say to danger is no greater than a normal rat.

In other words, in the picture above, the rats can see, register and process the supper-fast rat trap arm coming down on them, but are unable to physically do anything about it, like getting out of the way. So just before they die, they just end up watching their impending doom in slow motion while having just enough time to turn their hands up in fright and say:

"Mee ... No ... Pleezz!"
"Mee ... No ... Pleezz!"
"Mee ... No ... Pleeeeezz!"

Yuck-yuck.

No new trappings. I did have to rebait one of the traps which means a rat was able to eat the PB without triggering it. I purchased a couple of new traps to replace the ones I tossed - didn't feel like releasing the carcasses and rebaiting the same ones, so I just replaced them. Lowe's has a different brand than the ones in the pics above. I think the trigger pressure requirement is too great to trip them and I may need to replace them with Victor traps.

Anyway, today the dog went back to the ER vet. The blood draw from Friday was likely corrupted - the readings were off. At least that is what the vet thought.

So he got retested at no additional charge today. There will be no news on the official lab results until Tuesday or Wednesday.

They did do a blood slide smear at the draw site which showed low white blood cell and platelet counts. Similar to earlier tests. So it may be that the dog does have some kind of cancer in his bones. Will not do that invasive bone marrow biopsy just to find out the name of what may potentially kill him. -Won't tell you how much has been spent, not by me, to get this far in treatment and hospital stays.

Will not do chemo - can't justify the expense if that is what is needed. Will just do Prednisone, probably for the rest of his life, even if he does have cancer. That is what you do instead of chemo.

Let's see. He was very active and happy today - looks like he's getting better, but still tired. May have pain in his hind legs because he has a little trouble getting up and down sometimes. I think arthritis is an auto-immune response, so this may be the same thing happening since he does have an auto-immune condition. Drinks about a gallon of water and eats tons of food - that's a side effect of the Prednisone steroid.

In the meantime, don't need to give him this one pill that needed to be crushed, suspended in water and shot into his mouth with a syringe. He did not like that at all. I know I'm cool with the dog, but he's still part pit bull. Vet said that if his poop is not dark chocolate-colored, he doesn't have blood in his GI tract, so it's not needed. Glad I don't have to do that anymore.

Will update you when the doc provides an update. Here's a pic of the schedule for his meds which is stuck to the fridge. Some of those 4-in-the-moring med doses didn't get done exactly on time.

So.

Bad news to report. -Skip this thread if you only like happy endings.

He was fine yesterday. Had to do that retest on Sunday and the results were supposed to be reported today, but yesterday evening he went from active, to a bit tired.

By bedtime, he was very tired. He slept in the living room on the dog bed and I watched over him from the couch.

During the night he vomited his dinner - which included the medications hidden inside the meatballs of dog food.

In the early morning he wanted to be let out so he got his walk early. We went around the yard, then back inside. He was panting hard. He looked very tired. He wouldn't take any food - which meant he wasn't going to get his vitamin K dosage. I went back to sleep.

After a couple of hours, he vomited again. He got walked again after I helped him get up. This time, while sniffing the neighbor's yard, he just sat down. Then he put his head down. Someone watched over him the whole time. After about an hour, I finally picked him up and moved him to the front porch.

He was there, seemingly unable to move, for several hours. He puked again, so he got moved. There was no way to get food in him, so he got the meds throughout the morning by forcing them into his throat.

After a while the sun reached him so we erected a tent - he still couldn't get up.

Fed him water, little by little. Just enough for him to lap up a few ounces at a time, with several minutes in between. He was very thirsty.

After about an hour, he puked up everything again. -Couldn't even hold down water at this point. Moved him again and watched him for about another hour or two. Someone watched over him every minute of the day.

During this time we got a call from the vet with the blood results. Absolutely no platelets. Low white blood cell count. He was worse off than when he was admitted to the ER vet over 10 days ago. They said they wanted to do a bone marrow test and possibly chemo . . .

Fuck that. The dog's eyes were showing the hemorrhaging indicator - blood in his eyes, due to no platelets. It's cancer, in his bone marrow. Who cares what kind it is? We had agreed he would not go through anymore invasive tests or chemo - that would a crappy quality of life situation. For what? A few more months of him being miserable? No.

He was not interested in his #1 favorite activity: playing ball. He certainly could not partake in his #2 favorite activity: eating. And from the walks we took, he seemed to have trouble with his #3 favorite activity: shitting. -His legs would give out. His shit was a dribble out his ass. Blood and mucus more than diarrhea. Again, no platelets meant he was bleeding. He had lost his ability to make platelets completely, and with that, the ability to clot blood. So fucking sad.

So, here he is on the porch after resting from the last move just before we loaded him into the car to take to the vet.

When we got to the vet, they put a catheter in his leg and brought him into the room assigned to us.

We hung out with him for about 5 minutes while he lay on top of a blanket on the floor. Then the vet came in. She had two syringes in her lab coat.

The first syringe was full of a sedative. It was milky white. She explained that it would calm him down and afterwards, she would inject him with the "blue" liquid.

As the white liquid entered his vein, he stopped shaking and looked down at the catheter - like he was really enjoying the stuff. He seemed very calm and his panting slowed to normal breathing. He wasn't in pain anymore. He even licked the vet's hand as she patted him. He got a little bit drowsy.

While this was going on, I was bouncing his ball in front of him, about an inch or two from the floor. He looked at the ball a little and up at the vet and around the room. He seemed very calm.

Then the vet injected the blue liquid into the catheter slowly.

-Someone once said that the way you know you truly love someone is to ask yourself this question: If you had to die and the last thing you saw on Earth was this particular person's face, would you be okay with that?

I'm certain the dog was perfectly happy with watching the tennis ball bounce in front of him - his favorite game in the whole world - as he passed peacefully from this earth at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29, 2012.

:(

Here's how I choose to remember him - playing is favorite game in the whole wide world.

Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts.

I didn't think for a moment when this thread started less than two months ago that it would lead to this.

Yes it has been hard. It's difficult to pass the dog door without seeing an eager pup poking his head through from the outside holding a ball in its mouth. While he was an adult dog, he was all puppy when it came to play time. He really went nuts for anyone tossing a ball in the air. He would rather play than eat or drink.

Yesterday I went to Petco to see if I could just hold a puppy. -I needed a puppy-fix.

They didn't have any so I went to Petsmart. They didn't have any either, but they did have a giant plastic sculpture hanging from the ceiling. It's a lab looking down intently at a ball. -My dog was a lab-pitbull mix. More lab than pitbull, hence the reaction to the ball.

I had to get out of that store. On my way out I passed an aisle full of dog toys. I thought of how he would have reacted to the toys they had.

All I could think of was I'll never play with him again.

Anyway, it was sad.

I went shopping for some new shorts on sale a few storefronts over in the same mall. Retail therapy was a helpful momentary distraction.

-If you have a pet, I suggest you take pics and video of it right now. You don't ever think of doing that - I didn't, until it was too late.

So, back to the poo pit. I haven't gone into the back yard since the day we put him down. There's poo back there that needs to be added to the pit. I plan to pick up every bit of it, including the petrified pieces which were too small to pick out from the decorative gravel.

All that will go into the pit and I'll churn the contents again with the pressure hose. Then I'll pour an entire bottle of that concentrated enzyme liquid I added a few weeks back.

I figure the contents look mostly like mud now, but I want to make sure it's broken down completely in the next couple of weeks.

Since there will be no new content added to the pit, I plan to plant something in it after the contents stabilize. I was thinking daisies.

The dog was cremated after we left him at the vet's office. We didn't take the option to pay to have his ashes returned. So we don't have the remains of his body, but at least his poo will continue on pushing up daisies.

This thread is not dead yet. Stay tuned.

It does get easier over time but you still hurt and you definitely never forget. I'm that way, atleast. So sorry Cantrip. :(

Yeah, I cried too.

Sucky week without seeing him in the house.

And DCMH, we did what we could at the time that we did because we thought there was some hope of him recovering.

The hospital stay was to get him stable - so he wouldn't die on us. Then the tests were to determine what he had, and more importantly, if it was treatable. In the meantime, the meds were necessary to treat his symptoms. All we were hoping for was to get him to the point where he would heal on his own.

We would do a test and only do another treatment if that test was inconclusive.

We had decided that if he was going to die anyway, we would not put him through any more pain just to buy him some more time on earth. And we were not going to go through chemo.

That said, jeez, you just can't put down a pup. He's part of the family.

It was only when we got the news that his platelet producing capacity was shot completely - worse than when we first took him to the hospital - that's when end-of-life thoughts came up.

It just so happened that the final test results were reported on the day he took a nosedive - couldn't even hold up water or get up. Shitting was a dribble of mucus and blood out his ass.

We could have taken him to the hospital and spent thousands of dollars to get him MAYBE stable so he could go through the indignity of chemo.

Until that point, I swear I was going to keep that pup alive by giving him his meds as directed. There was no point after that whole day with him panting in pain.

But yeah, thanks for the vote of confidence. I wonder how many people don't even take care of a dying parent when the time comes. Or their kids - that's why we have Child Protective Services (CPS).

Anyway, I'm going to head to the rescue this weekend just to hold a pup. Don't really want to go through that again. It's been much better today, but damn, I miss the little pooch.
